Lifetime Plex Pass increasing to $750 from $250

AJUMP23

Parody of actual AJUMP23
That is a 200% increase in price.

I bought mine when it was $75. But I have to use Jellyfin a lot because plex does not work when the internet is down.

I never paid for it, what do you get if you do?

Some customization and other stuff.

But when they removed no playback or internal playback without an external connection it basically killed my love for it. It has a better interface than Jellyfin. But Jellyfin just works.

I almost FOMO bought it before the last price increase, or maybe the one before that. I don't really like Plex's vibe that much. Never heard of Jellyfin but I'll check it out. Mostly I just watch stuff locally on my computer and don't have need of any of this stuff. But every once in a while when I'm traveling I do feel that lack of a proper streaming setup.

Glad I bought this back in like 2015!

Some day I'm going to cash out my lifetime Plex pass and my gaming PC internals, so I can finally buy a house.

Jellyfin is great. Used it last night to watch some Shows when my internet was out.

I have Jellyfin set up locally on my NAS at home. I've ripped my DVD and Bluray movies and TV shows to it. I have their Android TV client on my two Nvidia shields. Great for TV especially since it keeps track of which episodes you've watched with a handy little "watch next" row, and it sorts TV shows into their own section by season etc.

I've also got it set up with an HDHomeRun for local live TV and some IPTV channels that have local feeds from Japan.

When I travel, I have an Android tablet with tailscale that connects back to my home network, and I can use that to load up Jellyfin and watch my shows. It's got automatic transcoding settings server-side, so even if your internet isn't fast enough to stream your files at full bitrate, it'll transcode them on the fly similar to Youtube videos going lower bitrate. Super handy software.

Not a big fan of those features, are they easily disabled? Issue being is that I don't want to use the player when watching locally. I'm used to PotPlayer, it's got all my settings dialed in, it seeks really quickly, I have all the keyboard shortcuts I need memorized, etc... So if I'm off streaming from somewhere I'd rather navigate to what I watch manually. A to Z folders, no Netflix style bullshit. It just ends up recommending episodes I've already seen outside of the app.

I have been using the free version for well over a decade and love it.
That said, it's buggy depending on what device I use (Shield TV, Xbox, LG tv app), and I would never pay money for it.

One thing I have noticed that bugs me, and others have commented on, is that the sound seems muted and soft, and I have to crank it way up on my receiver.
Does Jellyfin do a better job?

I've been a Plex user since pretty much the beginning and thought that it wouldn't work without internet, but this morning my internet was out and I was still able to put Smurfs on for my kids. Not sure how that worked, but it did. Glad I bought the Plex Pass back when it was $75, there's no damn way I would ever pay $750.

I've tried Jellyfin, still have it running on my server, but I wasn't digging the interface and ran into a few playback issues so never really tried it again.

Absolutely insane. I paid $70 or whatever for it a long time ago and never really felt like it was worth it. You know they are looking for ways to screw over old lifetime owners.

Lol, no thanks. I was debating biting the bullet and paying for Plex because I am working - slowly - on a home media server and I like it more than Jellyfin. But not at that price. Jellyfin it is.

I got mine when it was like $99. $750 when you have to bring your own server and media is ridiculous.

At one point they had it on sale for $50, which was when I bought the lifetime pass. I use it all of the time for my kids and parents. I'm surprised they didn't reboot the whole thing after a decade or so and made it so you had to pay again. PlayOn did this and I walked away from it.

As much as my family uses Plex, I wouldn't pay over $250 for it…let alone $750!

Plex literally doing a live-action version of the "live long enough to see yourself become the villain" quote from The Dark Knight.

Jellyfin now, tomorrow and always.

There can't be too many new users wanting to start a home server of *any* kind right now, never mind for video.

I agree, this is just the "extort me" price, and anyone who won't mind the absurd ram/storage prices, won't mind be ripped off for this, either.

When the internet is out your LAN is still working, so streaming to devices in your home is unaffected. It would only be a problem if you wanted to stream to a device not directly connected to your LAN.

I finally got started with Plex a couple years ago, ripping my physical collection to stream for convenience (and backup). Only using the free version, I don't really care about the pass. This is concerning though, it's only a matter of time before they start coming for the free version as well. At that time, I'll be switching over to Jellyfin.

Jellyfin is 10x better and infinitely cheaper (0 USD)
Eh -- I don't think so. Jellyfin is good, but it's not nearly as polished / feature rich as Plex. There's a lot of stuff you have to configure for Jellyfin through add ons and the like that are just native features in Plex. Not to mention the app support is there. Most stores/tvs/devices have a dedicated Plex app. Jellyfin can be a bit more hit or miss. Not to mention if you share with family and friend (I do quite a bit of that) -- Plex is infinitely easier to show / explain / get people to use.

I bought the lifetime sub a few years back, and glad I did given this news -- so I'll likely stick with Plex until they start removing features from 'lifetime' members or some otherwise catastrophically shit the bed.

Plex will not stream internally to my home when the internet is down. I know because it was down Monday and I used Jellyfin, got a network error logging into plex.

I started using Plex when it was a hidden channel for Roku and was in beta. That is just crazy.

I was very early in PLEX. When it was still in Beta. but it got really great for a while, and then they made it always online and it became worse.

People say Jellyfin is better, and it's true for the most part, but it has issues with Dolby vision 4k AV1 + True HD atmos on some clients. Particularly not great on the Fire TV ones. Plex does not.

Plex UI looks way better than standard Jellyfin too, unless you start modding around the layout.

Also Plexamp is unrivaled (included in plex pass). Waveform seekbars on your music is a must. Wish there was any competition, but there's literally nothing that even comes within spitting distance.

I wish I could get my Outside access figured out so that I could use plex amp outside the house. I open the ports follow the guides but can never get external access to my media.

That is a crazy amount. I thought about ripping all of my discs a little while back, but they stopped making the 4k disc drives so finding a reasonably priced one is difficult. Plus, i mainly wanted to do it to protect against disc rot, so to back them up properly i would need to make two copies of everything. That would be a ton of money in hard drives with the amount of movies/shows i have.

Strange, because that's one of the things Plex is usually the best at, making the weirdest most annoying network configurations just work. You do usually have to forward the port needed in the router's dashboard to your server IP, but beyond that, simply logging in to the plex account normally lets any device anywhere connect without trouble.

Plex will not stream internally to my home when the internet is down. I know because it was down Monday and I used Jellyfin, got a network error logging into plex.
That sounds like a config issue on your end -- my ISP went down a few weeks ago for like a day and I streamed a bunch of stuff internally.

**edit** - I I missed the bit about a network error during login. Do you not just stay logged in on the devices at your house?

Plex should always work in-home with the free version. Hardware transcoding and remote streaming are the main benefits of Plex pass.

On my PC where the media is it will stream, but When I go to my TV which is on the LAN it will not. Checks for internet connection first.

That makes sense. The server needs a license to allow remote streaming through plex. You should be able to install plex on your TV separately and add the media volumes directly to play without a streaming license.

But it didn't use to do that, and Jellyfin does not do that.

Isit? Its always been that way as long as I remember if you're using the other plex instance to manage the library. Plex counts it as remote play even though you arent transcoding.

Plex is always online now for internal network streaming and it use not to be. I like the interface but I don't like that they changed the rules on internal streaming.
