Jason Schreier‬: Bungie is planning significant layoffs, Destiny 3 is NOT in active production

Move them fuckers around internally to help push other projects that are currently in development under the PS Studios branch. Leave a couple of small teams for incubating projects, but man they need to stop with the massive layoffs. At this point they're probably doing this so they can cut the studios spending because Bungie has been such a stain these last few years on their financial reports.

That's what they did with their gummy bears project. I think they pulled over 30 or 40 people to make it under a new SIE studio.

Bungie will last a bit longer as they still got to support D2 and Marathon for a while.

But they are done.

Why? It worked. They cashed out. Sony got caught holding the bag. Remember, Destiny was one of Spencer's favorite games and even Xbox walked away when Bungie was putting feelers out there for sale because they said the price didn't match the books.
I think they just got outbidded to a price they didn't want to pay because MS were too busy with ABK and Bungie wanted to be independent. Phil was even making statements where he was saying the new MS could have kept Bungie. He was interested in having them but I don't think Bungie was interested in ending up back to square one with MS to begin with.

If Bungie does have layoffs, then the number of devs working on Marathon will go down, not up.

Math for the win!!!!
Let's walk through this my boy.

In April, Tassi said Marathon had a little over 400 employees working on Marathon, which was a little more than what Destiny 2 had.

Bungie can cut 375 Destiny 2 developers, which would not impact Marathon.

Bungie can cut 200 Destiny 2 developers and put +100 onto Marathon while ~75 work on incubation projects.

Sony bought Bungie on the Destiny decline hoping for some of that GAAS money to come rolling in on the "Halo" Devs next game. it didn't and its not a good look and even if none of the CEOS are still there who made the deal someone always has to take responsibility in the shareholders view. and its not going be the current CEOs.

Nope. They got some fat they definitely need to cut that are next to useless. Even less than useless since they have to hire an additional person to cover for their uselessness.
So get that carving knife out and go HAM!!!

Bungie may have never made any real money the whole Destiny life cycle. They just kicked the can with new side deals as they went along. They then spread out before the sale at the end of Covid and we saw what happened from there. Sony and the fans who put up with the devs who "were listening" failure after failure. Eventually the fanbase got tired of it and they put just enough to close out Destiny with the final shape before imploding.

The funny thing is I even like Marathon, but I have seen enough to understand anyone's dislike or disdain for the studio from years worth of BS. Bungie has run out of rope it seems for most. Marathon is the last hope it seems.
You're talking more about overvaluation.

Bungie's recent failure has to do with D2 and marathon tanking lately. When halo and destiny were consistent bangers.

If both these games were doing great raking in sales and D3 was on the horizon it wouldnt be so dire.

Sony's logic
Sony: Hey Studio, maker of awesome single player games, create GAAS :messenger_winking:
Studio: Cool, here's your GAAS (y)
Sony: It's not selling, you are fired :messenger_pouting:
Studio: 🙄

Edit: I think GAAS is the tool used by Sony to shed excess baggage from PS Studios, it's a conspiracy, nobody can be this stupid.

This is what they Old Yeller'd Destiny for. Note, at the time of this screenshot, a few moments ago, Destiny had more players online on Steam. And we know that Steam makes up the vast majority of Marathon's player base, and that Destiny's player base is more console oriented.

So a nice round of applause for this brain dead company. The turd I just pinched off could make more financially sound decisions.

Bungie leadership should go on the financial audit podcast just so I can hear Caleb yell at them and call them stupid.

THEY ONLY WORKED ON MARATHON AND DLCs ALL THIS TIME?
what the actual fuck?

is anyone out there still not fully convinced at this point that AAA game development is just completely fucked?

How in the hell did they go all in on marathon without having Destiny 3 on the burner?

The management team there is terrible at decision making

This is like the 3rd round of layoffs at Bungie in the past 1-2 years. At this point it's all fat, no meat except for that team they branched off into a PS Studio.

Not being in active production can mean many things. It can mean it was worked on and fully planned but got halted. It can also mean nothing really got off the ground to begin with.

Understandable if D3 in WIP got shut down due to costs and Sony not trusting they'd do a good job on time at a reasonable budget.

But it would be wild if Bungie never had any solid info on D3 and Sony bought them out in 2022 just due to D2 and Marathon. Logically, you'd think D3 would be a big bullet point for acquisition.

Bungie was better when Activision was forcing them to meet deadlines and actually release new games.
No doubt. What probably happened is Activision saw Bungie has a culture being a country club where they can coast making games under big corporate umbrellas. Activision being a successful game company turning around lots of games making bank, execs from both sides didnt see a good fit.

One thing you'll notice. Bungie always needs someone with deep pockets to foot the bill. And that bill seems much bigger than it should be, but Bungie drags it on with too many employees, money and time to make games.

Knitting and cooking classes are a small sample (but perfect example) of the kinds of stuff that goes on at Bungie.

Just make a fucking SINGLE PLAYER PS6 EXCLUSIVE game its not fucking rocket science you braindead fucks

Bungie could have done so with Marathon, a franchise with very rich lore. There were aliens, insane AI, storyline, everything a single player game should have.

But they fucked it up and made it into a GAAS title.

This will probably be a very nice post to return to.

It had a good run I put 1000+ hours into D1 time to move on though, I think Sony will shutter Bungie, Marathon unfortunately isn't the mega live service blockbuster Sony wants. They could always bring back Myth 😜

It's kind of crazy watching all of these once industry transcending studios struggle so much. To think studios like Bungie, Blizzard and Rare were industry leaders only proves it was the old talent that truly pushed those amazing games.

I don't even know which studios to trust anymore with making a solid game and has had an amazing track record for decades…

FromSoftware?
Valve?

Have them work on D3 while they, maybe along awith an external studio, port D1 to PC/modern consoles.

This is about the only way I'd return to anything Destiny related. Consoles don't even really need a port, per se. The original game is still a looker, it just needs a good 4K/60 patch for current gen consoles. Why they never released it to PC is beyond me. That would have been (relatively) easy money.

The reality is season 2 and 3 of Marathon will flop, just like the base game/ season 1. Most of the devs will be axed, probably around Christmas because companies love firing people during the holidays, and Marsthon will circle the drain for a couple of months before getting closed for good.
