ROG XBOX Ally X20 Announced At Computex 2026 With 7.4 Inch OLED Screen

Forced bundle??

I am hoping they put this same display into the next mainstream model. Like the next actual ROG Ally, not some limited edition unobtainium bullshit

Kinda feels like we've entered the "If you have to ask how much this costs, you can't afford it" phase of buying video game hardware.

I've recently been toying with the idea of picking up a Xbox Ally X on the cheap(ish)via open box deals, but this screen kills that idea.
I told myself I would never spend more than $1K on a handheld, but this thing is pretty nice.
Hopefully they put out an unbundled version or something.

Curious about the glasses. Never tried it, but glasses are a way better form factor than the VR headsets.

Glasses are great, really. I have an older set, and they do exactly what they're supposed to, give you a clear (much clearer than a VR headset) OLED screen to play on. Feels like a 75" HDTV anywhere you go, and they run directly from the handheld so no need for additional power unlike a VR headset which needs a battery or power source (beyond a handheld).

Really don't understand the push for handheld form factor tbh. Nintendo is a special case.
New-ish markets tend to get targeted a lot, even if their total sales are niche. The "if they really take off big we need to be one of the companies with a lot of mindshare" thing any new product segment will get. For MS there's the obvious "compete with Steam Deck" but for the OEM's they are just very used to selling devices in the hundreds of thousands or low millions space.

For me personally I don't get it. I have no interest in gaming on a tiny screen w/ a controller. Give me that mouse and keyboard and at least a 17" laptop screen.

They must have a lot of unsold glasses sitting around to force bundle them with a handheld whose primary selling point is its display.

We all have our preferences. I'm a controller gamer myself, even though I'm good with a mouse and keyboard.

I use my portable consoles for maybe 10-20% of my gaming time. Sometimes I like chilling on the couch with it while the wife and I have sports or a movie on in the background. She plays her Switch 2 exclusively in handheld mode.

The work I do has a lot of time where I'm waiting for something to download or export, so I'll play while I'm waiting.

Any time I can get gaming in is the life I wanna live.

I mean glasses are nice, and I have Xreal 2 Pro or whatever that's called.

However, doing a forced bundle with an updated handheld where the main upgrade is the Screen is counterproductive.

Yeah I'm happy there are loads of options for people. I get why others enjoy them, it's just not for me, I didn't word that well.

I use a laptop for what you describe personally. I have this dinky little portable desk (it's just a board with some "legs" and it folds up) and it's enough to fit my laptop w/ a mouse comfortable. I roll my office chair into the living room and just game that way while TV is on.

So I get the premise for sure. The form factor just doesn't really work for me.

Especially in this day and age where hardware prices are sky rocketing.

Unless they are literally giving away the glasses for free, which I highly doubt, this feels more of a way to justify the inevitable $1500-$2000 price tag this thing was going to have.

"Uhh, yeah it's expensive because you get two things!"

It's so odd to include glasses with your screen upgrade, for sure.

Some things that would make me a lot of comfortable with spending this kind of dough on a slab is removable battery, analog sticks, d-pad and buttons. The controller bits are actually really doable with all the third party modular stuff on the market. Serviceable battery would add bulk. At a minimum they should all have a true AC-only mode where the battery is completely bypassed for legacy use down the line. I'd like to see the controllers detach on all of them so there can be a very sleek docked mode where it just looks like a cool Steambox type console.

Really though it's not much different than buying a MacBook Pro. You know it will get updated in a year and you'll feel like you have old news. But people still buy those in large numbers.

It is, but even on a great OLED screen, there's times a massively larger OLED screen is a better fit.

I don't agree with the bundle, but I don't think I'd be totally against it if I needed both devices.

And optional bundle would be fine, but only selling these in a forced bundle is crazy. Those glasses are apparently $850 by themselves.

Vast majority of Mac users keep their laptops for many years. Only YouTubers do yearly upgrades.

The bonus is that MacBooks keep their value a lot longer vs Windows laptops.

Fellas, this is close to the territory of "things you can never wear in front of your wife". Her seeing you go all Stevie Wonder wearing these things facing the wall with a controller in your hands is an image she won't soon forget.

Yeah I think the controller bits on these makes years 3 and 4 look questionable. They need to be easy to swap out. Now that they're getting powerful, I'd like to see all the controllers be detachable and docks that make the thing look like a standalone PC-console box.

Batteries are a must as well. No more gluing the shit out of them so they can't be easily replaced.

That definitely made me lol 😂

My wife wouldn't care and would probably want a pair for herself. Does that work with Switch 2?

We embrace technology in this household (and laugh at each other when we look goofy AF), good sir!

Even if she didn't approve, I'd still go solo:

I just don't see it.......... All of these powerful PC devices look so brick like, and not all that aesthetically pleasing.
Probably because they have to stay cool, as to not cook themselves when running demanding tasks. It's why something like, say, a MacBook Pro, isn't the most svelte laptop on the market. It's more concerned with cooling and reliable, persistent performance, than outright aesthetics.

Oh mine would totally say the same thing and totally even think that means it. But will she? I wonder...

Detachable controllers are niche from what I have seen. The candy bar handheld seems to be the mainstream form factor.

Also because of the Steam Deck alot of these handhelds are user repairable already. Hopefully they get better at it in the future. I'm 100% committed to keeping my Legion Go 2 in service for as long as possible.

I hate how they refresh these things so often. Now I know why the Switch last for so many years.

The Switch was Nintendo's most successful PS3 level console. That gen was long because MS and Sony were making so much money, they rode that gen longer then normal. Nintendo was just doing that.

ASUS doesn't sell video games or take a cut from an eshop. Their handheld PC line sells enough that they release a new one every year.

My hypothesis is ASUS with how pricing has been going they want to sell this thing for 2k+ dollars. They probably figure a 7.4 OLED isn't enough to sell a Z2E device at that price point. (I love my Legion Go 2 but it was tough buying it at 1350+ tax) The glasses most likely haven't sold well. Thus they decide to make this Ally a collector's edition bundled with the glasses. Gives them the excuse to sell it for 2k+.

I do get why they are clunky devices, but I still feel they could do a little better in the looks department. And Like I said his is far from the worst.

At that price it's gong to sell worse than the PS5 Pro lol..

The more I think about the X20 the more frustrated I am. I want an Ally X. I've played a regular screen Switch and the OLED screen Switch. There is a big difference. It makes more sense to get the X20 but X20 has $850 glasses that I'm not going to use attached to it. The glasses also take away from using the OLED screen which is one of the main selling points of the X20. I'm not going to get this X20. I'd like to, but the price hike the glasses will cause isn't worth it. But now I'm not even sure it's worth it to get any other version of the Xbox Ally, because they lack the OLED screen and ROG will probably release a new handheld next year that has an OLED screen. I went from being a likely Xbox Ally customer to an absolute non-customer all because of the stupid glasses being bundled with the X20.

Edit: on top of it all, it was rumored Xbox has their own handheld Xbox they're working on. If that's the case, the Xbox Ally is even less appealing.

Yeah, this move is kind of a blunder. They are making folks like yourself who may have gotten Xbox Ally X pause.

However, the new bundle is going to be too high so people aren't going to be buying the updated handheld.

The whole thing is just boneheaded move that on the surface "looks" like it may push more sales but in reality it's going to be detrimental.
