Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Just wrapped up 007 First Light. I'm a bit mixed on the game overall, but visually it was frequently impressive, if inconsistent. Reminded me a bit of Control, actually.

I am near the end of 007. The outdoor environments do not look anywhere close to the photos above, especially the further you get in the game.

I have no idea how this game could cost 200mil dollars. The Last of Us 2 cost the same amount with developers living in Santa Monica vs Finland. The Last of Us 2 was fully motion captured. Cutscenes in 007 have background NPC's standing motionless. Outside a few cinematic action scenes, the cinematics are not on the level they should be for a James Bond game

It is too bad because the story of 007 is phenomenal. I really hope IO can fully motion capture their next game. They deserve it

Does Laufey look better than this? Sure, I guess. In the same way Assassin's Creed Odyssey looks better than Assassin's Creed Origins, maybe.


The "jump" to Laufey from God of War 2018 is what we would've expected to see within the same generation , ala Uncharted to Uncharted 2 or Bioshock to Bioshock Infinite. Not 9 years later on next generation hardware.
I've played and beaten the game three times. Then put in almost 100 hours into valhalla and the game does not look like that all the time.

I can literally count the areas that look good.
1) opening scene in the snow.
2) atreus climbing the mountain to asgard
3) arreus exploring jotenheim
4) midgard open world/frozen lake

The rest is all ps4 era garbage. Hellheim, musphelheim, vanaheim, the crater and alfheims desert all look like utter garbage. Game looks great during cutscenes like most Sony games and some linear areas but for a 50 hour game to look good only 5 hours is not acceptable. im hoping faye is a lot more consistent.

Lighting, environment, character models and hair all looks hugely better and considering Faye run at 60fps with those visuals I really like it.
It doesn't look that different to me. Maybe a little better but nothing crazy. But sometimes this happens and then when you play it it's a whole other ball game
 
Most of the games shown were indeed next gen. problem is that wolverine and gears fail to look better than indie games, that will dominate the discussion.

i think this was a good e3 with lots of stunning games shown.

Odissey doesnt really look better than origins...

I would kinda say the opposite even just because egypt is much more visually starking and interesting than greece, at least in the games.

What am I wrong about?
About all devs dropping the ball, plenty dont, plenty noname devs from outside of the west matched and surpassed top western dev studios by now.

Hell u got recent gothic remake as example, devs are basically half-amatours, yet game's target is 30fps even on ps5pr0 so it has a chance to look great(and yes it doesnt even hold super stable 30 on pr0 at times).
Graphic fidelity is there tho unlike wolverine/gears(60fps games from wellknown veteran western studios) and likely even blasian baldie game whenever its gonna release- maybe cuckman gonna make it ps6 exclusive or at least ps6 as target and ps5 gonna just get 2ndrate downport with 30fps 1080p base mode? Then i can see it improve a lot vs the reveal trailer :)

As a sony games fan(atic) i noticed sony in particular fucked up so hard getting rid of quantic dreams(heavy rain/beyond 2 souls/detroit), bluepoint(amazing remakes, including this gens demons souls) ready at dawn(the order 1886), team ico with ueda(ico, shadow of colossus, the last guardian) and bend(bubsy3d,syphon filter, resistance,days gone), that last one not closed yet but horrible layoffs and sent on gaas duty which failed, likely gonna close soon and for sure cant produce nothing good anymore...
All that while they spent over 5b usd on their "gaas initiative" (bungie alone was 3,6b usd)and burned all that money with exception of helldivers2.

Like i said- platform holders and many western devs really dropped the ball this gen, big time, it pains me to see it coz i really expected greatness from them.

Actually, his Ragnarok SS look better here. Both games are in similar ballpark and that's what I said from the beginning, I replayed Ragnarok 2 months ago on PC.

I don't really disagree with you, but in comparing to what they showed of Laufey, it makes sense to compare it to the best of what we saw from previous games.

Lighting, and character models and hair tech are clearly better on laufey, i don't know how you guys don't see that clear thing also those hq direct feed ragnarok pics have far better quality than youtube bullshit, here some shots taken by me from 30sec direct feed press video I don't know why big companuy can't provide full trailerson direct feed quality instead of YouTube bullshit

As for your question, I do think character model has been improved but not by much. It was already very good on PS4 and now it's still very good but not Metahuman level of good (which should be the next step for SM.
I mean I can be more impressed by some NPCs in Horizon FW than what I saw in Laufey, that's a problem. And overall it doesn't look like this game is releasing on a new generation of console. Which is a problem too. And that doesn't mean it's not looking fine, but we've been used to expect way more from Sony.

I don't see it.

For sure they added cool hair system with translucency but they still don't have basic sub surface scattering on faces. WTF? ND had in in Uncharted 4, many other third party games as well (on last gen consoles), this is part of the reason why Faye looks like shit.
