The current state of the gaming industry is so fucked, as well as Microsoft themselves being at the top of the "Shittiest Companies to Exist", its effectively impossible to revive the Xbox brand at this point. We need to back to 20+ years ago where gameplay was the focus and it was developed by literal nerds hugging their computer all day.

If XBOX is sold to an outside investor and becomes a joint venture, there's a very good chance only the software publishing arm survives. I don't think the Chinese or Saudi would want to enter the console hardware business at this point in time. They'll only lose money, there's not a cent to be made with an outrageously expensive new console.

They'd only want the AAA titles in the XBOX portfolio (COD, Elder Scrolls, Halo, Forza Horizon and a few other titles). All those other studios are just dead wood. If Asha Sharma doesn't close those studios, then an outside investor most certainly will.

I've been begging them to spin off XBOX as a wholly owned subsidiary. This would get rid of the corporate politics horseshit to a degree and they wouldn't be as beholden to HR bullshit and could report financials separately.

Spinning it off doesn't mean selling it folks.

I don't know if this is gonna be ever true, but if Sega somehow end up buying this it will be the biggest trolling moments in the universe against xbox fanboys lmao

What's the difference if they are 100% owned by Microsoft???

Doesn't make any sense

At the very least a spin-off would require to go into the stock market to make any difference

Expecting a subsidiary still owned by msft. It will be tied to windows and would be done so more buyouts are done. Xbox studios are bleeding but actibliz isn't. Also what are they cooking for 2027. If some of y'all remember the pastebin for game dev before series & ps5 had Sony projected to go guns blazing while msft would be barren for a while. Now if helix merges pc to console; msft would have a bigger sea to feed from.

If they are going to do any of that, do this one.
This would be to sell them off.

In addition to the above, why would any of what you're saying even happen? It's probably being integrated within MSFT itself what has allowed it to exist for so damn long.

Only SEGA and Valve have any real experience in HW, Steam wouldn't buy it and SEGA hasn't made HW in over 20 years, i voted dissolve, but i don't think any of the options will happen personally

Pulled wholesale from the purple place 'cuz I'm kinda lazy right now.

What's one more Xbox thread, really? This sounds like a recent development, not a rehash of the old rumors from years back in the Myerson years.

I say they spin it off to SEGA. Always had more heart in the game anyway.
More rubbish being peddled and Gaf will eat that shit up like it's a filet mignon.

I'm gonna say that the chances of the US government allowing a sale of Xbox to Tencent is 0% lol. And most of those other companies don't need or want Xbox. Maybe the Saudis?

If they are sold, they are going to be bough by a chinese/saudi fund. Sega, Nintendo, Steam or Sony don't have money enough to buy only the Activision part.

Makes me sad if true, just from the standpoint of how much I loved the 360 and how much fun I had playing Call of Duty Zombies with friends over the years. But Xbox has been a disaster for years. It's been a slow, sad death to watch.

The Chinese gaining control would be the worst scenario, but I wouldn't be surprised if the administration intervened since we're talking about an American company and the fact that the new owner would receive access to part of the infrastructure related to security measures and people's personal accounts.

It would be fucking hilarious if Xbox built up and gaslighted their hardcore Xbox fans the past few months as a means to increase their value in the event of a sale

This is what it will be. Been saying it for a couple years now. Xbox branded Steam Machines. Just like the Deck market now minus the screens. MS never wanted to be a low margin hardware company. They want to capture the audience and this can achieve that.

So what the hell is going on? If this was going on, why did they even bother with that showcase? Did the Xbox division just go rogue and put a lot of shit out there without approval from Nadella and Hood? Was that showcase put out their as an attempt to make it attractive for acquisition?!

None of this makes ANY sense. I mean good lord. But then again almost nothing with Microsoft ever makes any sense.

It's always easy to believe negative news related to Xbox, but even this seems WAYYYY too soon.
The showcase is locked in way in advance. Sure, some things can change on their end in terms of pulling E-Day or a trailer from the SoP, but the GP deals and reveals were inked years ago in some cases. The showcase wouldn't have been done as a means to attract some sort of buyer because the showcase is almost entirely meant to appeal to current GP subscribers and Xbox audience folks. An outside investor wouldn't want want to see a platform holder circling wagons around a failing console. Limiting audience reach is not something outside investors are keen on.

Look, all of this shakeup, starting from what led to Spencer exiting, Project Latitude, and even bringing in Asha, has all been basesd on one thing - bad financials with no real upside. Nadella can say they are long on gaming, but money getting tight due to AI investments not paying off, a massive moneysink like gaming is one of the easiest things to restructure and cut, especially when its had some of the largest investment with nothing to show for it. Giving soundbytes to the diehard fans is easy - MS is an absolute monster when it comes to gaslighting their audience. They've been doing it a long time.

Where we are now is that the financials have to make sense, and unlike the last time this situation showed up, there is no GamePass hail mary pitch that is going to save them. You're not going to convince the higher ups that investing another $100b is going to get them anywhere, and don't even get started on the prospect for future HW.

A fitting end for something that should have never been in the console industry.
I can't lie I enjoyed the output of the first Xbox but they really did the worse. They brought hype to gaming quality and it's fucking annoying seeing people dismiss game flaws because "yeah but you werent part of the hype cycle"

Pbs Nature Fight GIF by Nature on PBS

Oh, it's you guys again. Guess this is never gonna get boring, because it seems to be in your nature?

I wonder if you still will be so satisfied about Xbox going down, when there's basically a Japanese monopoly of Sony and Nintendo.

Only a moron wouldn't want any competition!

I'm sorry, can you tell me where this competition is?

Who says hardware has to be involved?

The title is wrong. This is about MS potentially spinning off XBOX, not just Xbox hardware.

My guess is that any outside investor would rather own XBOX' AAA gaming IPs than the hardware business. This is the absolute worst time to launch a new console.

Crazy how MS can't ever keep there customers happy with there hardware or anything. MS always fail on the hardware and understanding of it. The moment they lose there business connection. MS could fold bad. 5-10 years from now, customers may not be even using windows of the os

I'm down for this. Microsoft should outline a minimum featureset spec, which would qualify a device as an Xbox. A manufacturer can license the brand, build the hardware, and anyone who purchases one can be guaranteed a minimum baseline of performance.

Edit: of course it's a manufacturer wants to go above and beyond the spec sheet, that's just gravy.

Nobody would take the brand because it's basically dead.

Maybe a Sega Xbox would hit the nostalgia for a lot of people, but even they wouldn't risk going back into the hardware market.

Best to just exit the hardware space and dissolve it.

Just put it out of its misery, no one is gonna buy it. The console market on its own is very tough right now in the current economic climate.

No one is looking to buy a failing console brand whose best days are behind it. Best they can do is dissolve Xbox and salvage the studios and try to make them profitable again.
