PlayStation is removing 551 purchased movies from customers accounts. Terminator 2, Total Recall, Dusk til Dawn, etc.

Sony is contacting PlayStation Store users who bought movies from the platform that were distributed by StudioCanal—like Terminator 2, Total Recall, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind—to say that "you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library." There's no mention of any refunds or make-goods for the affected users. Sony simply says the films are going away "due to our content licensing agreements," once again reaffirming the fact that you are never truly buying anything that's digital, just temporarily renting it.

That's so insane in a good case study for the people who always go on about how the content is digitally available after purchase. I know movies are a little different than games at least for the time being, but nonetheless it is a harbinger. I'm glad to say that I've never bought a digital movie in my life.

It's good that this doesn't happen all the time, the problem is that it still happens. It's just proof that it CAN happen, and at any moment.

I know we aren't supposed to talk about it, so I'll just say I would feel justified doing the thing that we shouldn't discuss. This is not my normal stance.

This is the kind of thing that will only encourage people to go back to piracy. Is that what these mega corpos want?
Because if buying is not owning, then piracy is not stealing.

Wow. I did not think many things could shock me about this kind of stuff but this actually does. Removing purchased content with no way to ever access it again is nothing but a longterm rental. Damned if I will ever buy anything digital again unless I view it that way. I kind of already do that but this just took it to a new level.

cough265 cough

Sony should have wrote the check. I'm sure Studio Canal gave them a number. Sony sold these movies to their customers with the expectation Sony would keep them available. Sony bought a temporary license for these movies and sold it to you guys as permanent assuming they would make deals to keep it going. Money got tight, they didn't like Studio Canal's number and here we are.

Sony, Microsoft, and Valve are trying to outdo each other in bad news this week, meanwhile Nintendo is over here acting like your favorite grandma:

"I remade one of the best games from your childhood and it's only $50. After that, here's a bunch of those Switch 2 editions you were asking for, go do a Xenoblade. 🧓🏻"

This is complete bull. I usually hate it when the gov gets involved but folks getting screwed over like this is completely unacceptable. Something needs to happen

The only digital movies I own are the ones that come free with physical copies. But they're being way too flippant about this. Hey that thing you paid money for? Fuck you it's gone.
The only digital movies I have are the ones I ripped off the disc myself.

I have zero sympathy for any sucker who was dull enough to buy digital movies when the superior option in physical media is there.
You know you are only renting a digital licence and they can take it away anytime. It's in the terms of service.

Not only is physical superior in picture and sound quality, nobody can take them off you

Hes right tho. I used to get $5-$10 blu rays all the time at Best Buy and Walmart. Now they don't carry them at all. Have to buy them online now and they rarely get super cheap.
Might be different in the US then, they're literally ten a penny in the UK.

We've got shops like HMV still and CEX. Charity shops just throw them at you

I had to stop buying them due to ridiculous storage and most films I have now are just stored on 5tb drives.

I've zero trust in buying anything digital when it comes to the TV. For exactly this reason. Not to mention all of the 'Political correctness' crap that is avant garde these days (n)
