It would just be kicking the can down the road, might as well have it over and done with and move on then reneg and only have to announce it again later.

98% of the people whining and proclaiming boycotts will buy digital only games in 5 years and keep gaming like there's no tomorrow. Sony knows this. MS knows this. Nintendo knows this.

And that 98% is only 15% of the overall market, which is predominantly digital already anyway.

So no, there will be no U-turns.

That said, from my perspective, being able to re-sell games was just about the only advantage consoles still had over PC so with that gone, PC all the way.

They can't take this back because they know that the trust is gone forever. Nobody is going to believe a U turn on someone like that.

Give it time once lawsuit happens left amd right, and EU and USA regulatory intervene, there will be change of decision for sure

At best we can hope for postponing it a bit and maybe them allowing other publishers to do whatever they want. For PS5. For PS6 the decision is probably set in stone.

StudioCanal did this in one region, not Sony.

Call me when this happens for a game. Digital doomers have used it as a bogeyman for 2 decades.

People were literally saying the same thing about Steam 20 years ago.

Chill dude. Blame Sony, not me

It is as easy as this, I've been gaming on console for decades, because of the physical format, no physical is a no buy, that's it.

Even if they did, I think I'm done with them. Most of their first party sucks to me, and the only games I've enjoyed on PS5 are third party.

Backlog is my future after this generation.

As ever, it will depend on sales. If people behave like sheep, obviously not. If Sony loses a significant portion of the market share, no doubt that strategy will be reversed.

I mean come on. Twitter polls. According to them Musk is also very handsome and funny.

He doesn't have to be handsome or funny to get any woman he wants

I think yes, but as small as they can get away with to silence the backlash. It'll be select games only from 2028, so only the big hitters, and only for PS5. They'll stick with the no disc plan for PS6.

That option must has been on the table anyway. It's odd to stop physical copies after 7 years of a generation (which seems increasingly likely to still be current-gen at that point). Just wait until the next one.

They could extend it for PS5 but the question is when does the PS5 end. With PS6 probably costing a huge amount and not that big of a gain in performance I can see PS5 carrying on with cross gen for longer than before. Maybe they could do 2030 with limited runs.

It doesn't seem like PS6 will come without a disc drive and they will only offer a plugin type for backwards compatibility. It's up to consumers to baulk at the PS6 or not.

Feels like we're just delaying the inevitable by two years, it would show some good will to the people that bought a disc based PS5 at least.

After that, the digital consumer space needs looking into with the prospect of a closed market for PSN, ownership and maybe the ability to make hard copies.

Sony deleting those movies is tragic. We can understand a license runs out to purchase but those that did buy them should have access for life.
