No serious physical rights gamer cares about losing a few save files, and their library will be all cheap old or heavily discounted games, like the 90% of digital revenue that John at DF said it was.

Physical first gamers aren't losing those games unless they sell up their PlayStation, and even if they did, the libraries probably overlap heavily with old games they own physically from when they released in previous gens on disc. Any potential loss is nothing compared to the loss of owning games versus the open ended rental that digital licenses are on PlayStation's store moving forward.

I'm pretty sure most of us abandoning PlayStation have weighed up the situation and are happy to punish PlayStation(and Sony) forever over this, even if cutting off our nose to spite our face looks like the theme.

Many sell their old consoles, or at least pack them away eventually and don't have them plugged in.

For me it ended on a sour note to go from PS5 to PC this gen. I made the move to PC when both Sony and Microsoft were all in on doing ports. Built a $3500 living room PC beast. And saw no need for PS and XBOX consoles anymore. XBOX to PC was easy, many games are Play Anywhere and things carry over, but for PlayStation it was worse. I repurchased everything from Sony on Steam. Even if I got many games on sales it was still a lot of money, and no save transfer was annoying.

Then they ended the port strategy…
No fun allowed.

So yeah. I'm impressed so many fans are willing to give it all up and exit the bubble at this point. Means missing out on all single player games from Sony's studios.

I'm out because I'm cranky, from my perspective they tricked me into rebuilding a Sony library on PC and got me thinking I could move there. I'm hoping they do cross generation ports for awhile at least, I have a Pro. But once that ends I'm out, guess I'll play next Ratchet on YouTube

Sony had that PS overlay going, I really thought they would make a launcher, felt like it was happening. Could've been awesome! And would be clever to have some exclusive PS Launcher functionality to pull people in, sharing of saves, licenses, trophies, screens, playtime, etc.

So by that logic, given that the other 45% creates only another 4%, and old games and indies by digital create all the rest, might as well abandon selling AAA games physical and digital on PlayStation, too, yes? No I didn't think so, and that is the same reason why the billion per year generated by physical is equally important.

No one needs a PlayStation console to play PC potato games or indies, could just get a £300 laptop instead, so both the 55% of physical games being AAA do far more than the 5% revenue to make the platform viable IMHO.

Of that 5% revenue from physical media, 90% will just adapt and keep playing digital only. As there will literally be no place to buy discs, no xbox, no PS. Only nintendo will remain and i suspect even Switch 3 will not have discs.

Share with us an opinion for once. Are you good with Sony's decision to abandon physical media? Or does your coding prevent you from saying anything negative about Sony?

I have not shied away from criticizing Xbox after they decided to go third party. Because I expected more from them. I was wrong.

My point of view can change when new facts/evidence is presented. Unlike a fanboy that stays loyal to a brand. I've criticized Nintendo as well when their greed was shown with the reports about the price increase months back.

But here you are, still bootlicking Sony, and crying to a mod. I offer more to this forum than you ever have. I talk about games that I play. You laugh at anything pro anything other than Sony. I bet you post on other forums though.

It isn't 5% that is the important part, but that it is 55% of customers buying new AAA games that chart. The number of add-on disc drives sold for the PS5 slim and Pro don't support your conclusion.

Both parts of info can be true, physical barely makes them any money nowadays and they calced by 2028(aka ps6 launch) it will be even worse, ofc its still big chunk of their playerbase who buys mostly or even exclusively physical(we can argue its 30 or 50%, but defo big chunk).
Basically ppl who cant afford 80$ digital codes will migrate to pc 2028 onwards, the ones who can will stay, but even not all of them, so yup, financially sony wont suffer much, in terms of playerbase we will see huge drop.

So basically most of europe will not be able to afford staying on playstation platform 2028 onwards, solid chunk of NA will, but there will be big losses there too, rest of the world- basically gone except rich african princes/oil sheiks

Why would they do that? We've already established that 90% of the game sales aren't new AAA games needing the latest and greatest hardware, and without a GoG DRM free option on PlayStation why wouldn't people just PC potato those purchases and wait for cheap commodity PC hardware to catchup to play PS6 level games?

The cost of a luxury new release AAA game isn't one to one for price conscious buyers when physical provides ownership - in real terms - and digital is like a rental with an unspecified return/end date. The latter method is a far more frivolous way to consume, so the idea that 90% of the 5% are okay with PlayStation selling them a PS5 addon drive under false pretence of usefulness - eg 3years rather than 10years to play new AAA release - at ~15%-30% more to the cost of their last slim/pro console and then be okay wasting even more money - being more frivolous - buying AAA digital games and buying into the new shitty walled garden doesn't credible.

At best PlayStation will convert 75%, and even then that missing 25% of converts from the 55% AAA launch buyers is going to be at least a 10% drop in day one sales they and publishers aren't going to welcome.

I predict PlayStation will covert less than 50% of the physical AAA day one buyers and the damage that will do to sales of games costing +200M is going to be devastating to third parties on the platform and subsequently to PlayStation and Sony.
