Alanah Pearce - Sony’s Greedy Disc-Killing Move Was Inevitable: The Death of Physical Gaming (And Why Outrage Won’t Stop It)

Doubt it could truly be optimized like a console without being a console. If it is a console that plays Steam games then what PC freedoms are we giving up in the process. Too many questions here. I think whatever they do, it will just be a "reference" device, as Asha said, and the OEMs will take over the Xbox brand, which is fine, but these are the same OEMs that put all kinds of bloatware on Windows. We will see
I'm curious as well. But given MS' track record on delivering, i'm a skeptic.

If its good, i'll buy a console form PC with lots of power for the TV above my fireplace.

Threads about Alanah's takes always bring me joy because I know we're gonna get a dozen photos of her best assets.

I don't disagree that the outrage isn't going to persuade Sony to change course. They already said they're willing to lose the physical-only audience because the digital sales have been so much higher.

Where they're losing me is the possibly $1,000+ console. I can stick with my PS5 and other consoles and be just fine; my backlog will keep me busy for years.

Until my PS5 dies and then I either try to replace it or have a PS4 and 5 game collection that collects dust.

This is so incredibly obvious that it hurts me that people with a decent IQ don't get it. They are unable to see beyond their fucking noses.

This is just one step in a long ladder that leads to a very dystopian future, not only in videogames but also in more important industries. And you can see how gullible many are. When their favorite brand or political party ask them to open their mouth and swallow whatever they are given, they do obediently, no question asked.
They do it in increments like boiling a frog. Deals and "free" games on subs, key cards and discs that require part or all the game to be downloaded, codes in a box like GTA VI, all leading up to elimination of physical media altogether. Then deleting of movies and hand waving it with ToS bs, taking whole stores offline. Next up $1K+ consoles without disc drives so people with physical collections are left out in the cold concerning BC and enhancements. Eventually we'll get to consoles as a novel or boutique item for the rich or extremely hardcore players. Accelerationism all converging on Compute as a Service and owning nothing, with the ultimate kick in the nuts being that it's all tied to your social credit score. The whole thing I think is sick.

A big part of it was the release of the Pro. Sold my DE and Series X and bought a Pro with disc drive. Kind of got me back into old school feel of console gaming. I've talked about this a bit in other threads, but I really enjoy the aesthetic of console gaming with physical copies. Having a tangible collection of games, selecting a title to focus on, and putting it the system. Good vibes. Don't get me wrong I've always had a pretty decent retro collection with carts and discs of everything from GBA to Saturn, PSX, SNES, GEN, ect. GP and PS+ were altering how I perceived the value of modern games. It doesn't help either that they do shit like key cards and key discs where the game isn't even on the disc.
it's nice that PS5 Pro got you back into physical games but that's what I'm curious about, that you went physical rather than digital when you switched from subs, especially because you were pretty anti-physical/pro-digital over the gens/years. I remember in pretty much all the physical threads, the polls and other pro physical threads:

My X1S has never had a disc put in it and never will. I actually shudder at the thought of a modern physical collection where you have a disc, but still need 50GB+ dl/patches. What's the fucking point? Switch carts...I get that, but digital is the way forward for most.

I'm all digital. When I buy games it's mostly on PC from Steam or gog. I try to download all the EGS free games as a backup library, or to add to GeForce Now. I play Xbox mostly on PC via Game Pass. Also on Steam Deck both locally and via xCloud. I play mostly PS+ Extra games on PS5. Although I'll buy an occasional game like FFXVI.

TLDR:
-Buy on PC
-Xbox and PlayStation via subscriptions

I would have thought you'd just go digital even if you ditched subs especially as you didn't see any price advantage in physical either and hated the clutter. Is it just a nostalgia thing that you chose it over digital or something else? I haven't really seen you talk about your switch over to physical in other threads. Is it the ability to resell everything and not be attached? Its cool that you've got into collecting physical PS5 Pro games again though.

I think I explained it pretty well and the proof is in the pudding I've bought around 70 physical console games and countless GoG games over past 18 months.

I'm not sure what you're after at this point, but I'm flattered. Is it that you thought you had a "gotcha" moment only to find I have monstrous physical and GoG purchase habit of about 50 games per year over the past 2 years? :messenger_winking_tongue:

I just asked what changed your mind about physical over digital when switching from subs. I didn't ask for proof of anything I was just curious why you went physical after complaining about clutter, it being pointless due to downloads and having no price advantage. Just wanted to know what the reason for your change in opinion was, nostalgia for that old school collection/switching discs or something else like no attachment, looks like I hit a nerve though. 😄

She's kinda right; the main thing these companies care about is money-in being greater than money-out.

However, based on how much coverage Sony's decision has attracted, Sony is going to lose billions in revenue from people who just won't show up to the PS6. We've been here before with the PS3, and were it not for the company changing leadership, we probably wouldn't be living in a world where PlayStation still exists.

I think Sony expects people to just dumb-buy the PS6, and I think they're in for a rude awakening after the launch period. People aren't stupid. The foundation of the device being anti-consumer will become clear to the mass market, but that's the path that the company is choosing to go down. I wish them well, but I (and I could be wrong) see a future where PlayStation is just not relevant anymore — just like Bravia, Xperia, Handycam, Vaio, Walkman etc.

The whole big reveal of Sony this gen is that they aren't the same PlayStation we all knew and loved. Their management is basically running them into the ground thinking loyalty exists regardless. It's not loyalty, it's just assuming when people buy video games; they buy PlayStation. Which blows. I didn't believe it until this year. The writings probably been on the wall for those close and personal with the industry. Part of me hopes they lose big time.

Sony now makes a barely custom PC with a crappy closed system storefront for soon to be over 1000 bucks a machine. One "great business decision" at a time.

I personally preferred custom architecture , boxes that were 1/10th the cost of a PC and still had benefits & competition. It was a lot better.

I just changed my outlook on modern console gaming because of the Pro. Gave me reason to buy on a platform other than PC. And if I was ever going to invest into buying modern console games it would be something tied to good vibes like my retro gaming habits. The aesthetic of console gaming. Don't get me wrong I still buy more games digitally, it's just done on PC where it can be backed and hacked. Hopefully that will put your mind at peace.

Don't shoot!! I buy 50 physical and GoG games a year.

The problem with Sony is they did not explain what will happen with digital only future especially on ps6. Very vague. Will there be consumer protection? Refund policy? Full ownership? Can it be shared?

They just have nothing to explain. Nothing will change. Refunds, and especially ownership rights, are things that will never improve solely because of platform holders. Not even Valve has addressed the issue of digital ownership. That's a much harder problem because we need laws that establish rights for digital ownership, and sadly, we're still a long way from that.

It's probably best to just assume the worst. Just like the possibility of PS6 having a disc drive add-on for PS4/5 BC and Blu-Ray playback. Not going to happen.

If they had any good news or were thinking of making positive changes they would have done it already. Especially before killing physical or in response to the backlash. They're just hoping the unpaid bootlickers can somehow sway people to stay on board and failing that they'll just make the bootlickers pay more lol.

Good question. I don't know. I was thinking they can have two separate boot options. I mean fundamentally, a console is not different than a PC hardware-wise. So, I don't see why we couldn't have 2 boot options. Systems have OS's of their own, but extremely light compared to windows. There probably would be compromises, maybe with mods and such, but if we're talking a decent amount of optimization, that's a big win imo. I can't stand how PC has to power through bad optimization. I'm a PC gamer through and through, but I have to admit, if they make the correct decisions with Helix, and make a user friendly hybrid PC system. I probably will get that for my living room.

I can be a bit of a dreamer, but at least it's optimistic.
I know we are talking about MS here... and they have a tendency to do dumb shit... but how does it in any way benefit MS/Xbox to have a PC/console hybrid that allows gamers to totally bypass their own store and play Windows games (cause that's what they really are) off their Steam app and library?

Fundamentally taking away the one thing Xbox has got going for it as a platform holder. I mean, at least right now they still sell some games on their store within Xbox; imagine a platform holder that doesn't make money at all from all third-party games, because who will bother with the Windows Store when you can just buy your games from Steam?... including Xbox first-party games.

Surely, MS can't be that stupid.

I love the fact that whenever someone creates a thread about Alanah, the assignment attached to such a thread is always executed with masterful precision. A thing of beauty!

Bless them tiddies!

The point is with PC it's multiple stores competing. On consoles it'll be only one store soon and no other option. Prices will go and stay high because you can't do anything about it.
Keep repeating this bullshit
Those stores have same price for games, and often even same discounts
Because it's not stores who set prices, it's owners of games (publishers) and they have no incentive to compete between stores

Exactly why the "preservation" argument is horse-shit. Everything is dumpable.
History suggests this is true, but it's not inconceivable that a console's security could remain unbroken for a very long time.

Xbox ONE stayed unhacked for more than 12 years. If someone actually secures a console properly in the digital future then game preservation would be kinda fucked.

With GOG you actually do. You can burn them into physical and keep them. That's not even the point. The point is with PC it's multiple stores competing. On consoles it'll be only one store soon and no other option. Prices will go and stay high because you can't do anything about it.

People miss the point that the prices on every digital store are out by the publishers, not Sony. With the time everything will be homogeneous, it doesn't have sense for Ubi or the store owners to have Assa Creed at one price in each store. Usually with PCs other stores is that if the price difference is big, it's because those keys are fishy.

With jailbreak consoles you can also do anything as storing games on SSD or it running burned copies. It may not be completely legal, but neither is using bios or ISOS of games for emulation and other things.

Dude Helix is looking pretty promising so long as Xbox doesnt F it up. You'd have access to your Steam library. Imagine a PC with the efficiency of a console. Never thought id see the day!

I really don't think it will have access to Steam for obvious reasons.

Yeah sure, you abandon a plattform because turning digital and go to the one plattform that doesn't have phisical since at least 15 years ago.
Someone may do exactly that if physical was the factor putting PS ahead of PC for them.

Or if they're smart enough to understand how the resulting absence of competition on PS will play out for PS users.

You clearly have no fucking clue how retail economics works. MSRP is irrelevant. On PC the authorized retailers compete by cutting their own margins while platforms like Epic have literally subsidized discounts to steal market share. PC players can shop around.

Sony killed 3rd party digital game code sales and locked digital purchases into the PSN. There is no competing retailer fighting to sell you the same digital copy cheaper. Publishers can still discount but the retail pressure is gone. Comparing a competitive multi-store market to a single-store walled garden is peak idiocy.

Nobody has heard of the ROG ally? Yea it's not Xbox, but its the same concept if the Helix is a true PC/Console hybrid. They're going to give us a gimped PC experience on it? That sounds like an incredibly bad idea. Not sure if anybody has even tried xbox mode on PC here, but you can kind of see the blueprint of what Helix might be. It includes games from any launcher, battle.net, Steam, Ubisoft connect, Epic Games. Those games show up on the homepage of xbox mode, you can select them, and they connect just like they would on Steam if you need a launcher. They show up automatically as well, which is actually better than having to put games into steam.

Not if codes are still sold at retail like they are now (code in a box)

So why buy Helix? Why not just buy any PC? Why not buy a Steam Machine? What's the Helix USP?

Optimization. My guess is Helix will gain performance in its Xbox mode that will improve upon the PC version. PC gamers would 100% take a 10-15% performance increase. Accessibility, simplicity. A console like experience on a PC. I mean there's many reasons I'm sure are pretty obvious. If their xbox mode gives you 10-15% more performance, that's big. This I think would be more appealing to people who buy pre-builds, and have used the xbox console, but I myself would be interested in putting it in my living room. I wouldn't personally stop building PC's though, as I enjoy the ability to upgrade at will, which I'm assuming Helix will be more restrictive in that sense.

Saying physical games is what made playstation a "name in the industry " makes no sense since 85% of sales are digital. Sony is just following the market not killing a thriving business. By 2028 those 15% are probably less than 10%.

Also "buy a pc instead that also doesn't have physical games" makes no sense for obvious reasons.
Who is retarted enough to abandon their PS library and pay ~2500$ for a PS6 equivalent PC and rebuying their PS library on Steam? The only reason I will not the buy the PS6 is because it will likely cost more than 500£ and I am not spending more than 500£ on gaming hardware.

Another retarted excuse(virtue signal) that people bring up (especially on the purple site) is won't some one please think of the third world gamers, how will they access games without discs? As a gamer with a third world PSN account, most third world gamers with PS5s or XS consoles are rich as all hell (in the top 1% of their countries). 90%+ gamers in third world countries are on phones, some of them farm gems and gold in these games as a job. These people are not buying 500£ consoles and the 300£+ large screen TVs for gaming. Not to mention, digital sales on PSN are as good as Steam.

Leaving a digital platform for a better one shouldn't be that shocking. Losing physical is a big deal for millions of people and the main benefit of console. Without that the prices, digital rights, and backwards compatibility are all worse. The library is smaller and you have to pay for online.

The fact of the matter is PC was probably already better than console by now but many of us had an attachment to physical so we just stayed with what we knew. Soon as that gets taken away, it's easy to jump to PC. Or Switch 2 if you want to keep playing physical.

If you are at the point where you have no choice to choose digital the you might as well re-evaluate your digital platform options. Steam is a superior digital platform compared to PlayStation. That's not a difficult choice to make, imo. There are obviously other factors though.

The Asus device that has Xbox branding? I'm familiar with it.

It depends. For Microsoft own hardware they manufacture, having Steam doesn't make a lot of sense. They currently take 30% cut from every game sold on the Xbox store.

If people decide to buy games on Steam on their hardware, they lose out on that 30% cut per game. I'm sure Valve would love it. Microsoft shareholders not so much.

Rog Ally is just a PC handheld with Xbox branding. I've tried Xbox mode. Helix has to have a lot more going for it than that to make a dent especially considering you don't need Helix for Xbox mode. I get better performance in Big Picture mode than I do Xbox mode. Vast majority of PC gamers only game on Steam so having a launcher that includes Steam does do much. Folks will just launch Steam instead. As IDKFA IDKFA said, this all is to Valve's benefit so none of it makes much sense.

Also BC is not a guarantee on consoles. Sony could press the reset button and good luck starting over.

So what? You don't own your digital PC games no matter how many digital stores you can choose from.
Ubisoft has killed Crew, made it completely inaccessible.

Guess what? It is playable now, thanks to fans.

On PC you always have a way to play your games. You have access to 40 years of games. And you get the best refund policies in the industry.
