Syphon Filter PC port

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

An unofficial Windows PC runtime for the NTSC-U 1.1 release of Syphon Filter (SCUS-94240). The project combines the original PlayStation gameplay code with a native Windows host for rendering, input, menus, audio and FMV playback.

Runtime features

  • Original R3000A mission/gameplay execution with native Windows presentation.
  • Complete 20-mission campaign flow, checkpoint restore and persistent mission unlock progress.
  • Integrated English launcher with game-image selection, arbitrary internal resolution, aspect mode, fullscreen, MSAA, bilinear and anisotropic filtering.
  • Optional Russian ViT Co. text pack for all 20 missions, menus, briefings, weapon descriptions and baked map labels, with a unified Industry Bold 2x pixel atlas matching the original Industria-style interface for Latin and Cyrillic text. Speech, music and FMV remain sourced from the selected USA v1.1 image and are never replaced.
  • Remappable keyboard/mouse controls and retail-style gamepad controls.
  • Native OpenAL presentation of game audio and FFmpeg-backed PS1 STR playback.
  • High-resolution, perspective-correct and Z-buffered scene rendering with PGXP geometry support.
  • Dynamic scene lighting layered over the authored PS1 vertex colours: intact mission lamps, fire, alternating police lights, muzzle flashes, explosions and the retail flashlight illuminate terrain, props and actors with bounded falloff and surface-aware response. Gabe, allies and enemies cast posed, light-directed shadows onto authored floors, slopes and moving lifts.
  • Restored PS1-style HUD, inventory, objectives, parameters, weapons and map pages, including current-position and active-objective indicators.
  • Correct scene occlusion for pickups, grenade sprites and transient effects.
  • Weapon muzzle flashes for player and enemy weapons, with first-person behavior matching the current camera mode.
  • Restored glass/window destruction shards and restart-safe destructible state.
  • Launcher DOSSIERS gallery with four sharpened bonus pages.

A Syphon Filter PC port / Syphon Filter Recomp is here and now we have ONE MORE PS1 recomp available to play! While people wait for the Symphony of the Night recomp to release for the PS1 version...have another iconic best PS1 game ever...on your PC!

Cool, I was hoping this trilogy of PS1 games would become somebody's project. It's a funny old game from that era before we "figured out" how to do 3D action, but it has some interesting solutions that I wish some developers would try out in a new game these days. Bend Studio's lock-on mechanic in particuar was balanced and in a way more like what real shootouts in the field might be like than the aiming systems used today. (I have a feeling mouse-aim in this port will just about nerf the game though.)

I'd be interested to see if it ever gets a RT mod or anything crazy like that (which would be cool since it's stealth and lights can be shot out here, although its a case where you have to be careful what you wish for because all the old effects are painted and bound to be wildly inaccurate if you try to replace with realtime methods.)

i wish they would do something new and good with the IP. a good modern syphon filter has been on my wishlist for a long time.
sony has so many IP that just rotting away.

I always thought it was odd that his running animation is so bad/weird but his forward roll animation is actually quite good for a PS1 game.

I actually grew to kind of like the run style; it's animated to account for the unbalanced weight of the heavy pack and the unusual differences in gait between one-handed and two-handed weapons. (I never compared it specifically, but I would get the bottom half of the character is always in the same general walk/run cycles while the top half switches between jogging and hip-firing or dusting off pistol shots and slinging a rifle and whatever else Gabe does?) Efficient and accurate for the character needs on mixed terrain, very fluid and controllable, even if it can look a bit silly sometimes.

So, we've been through discussions of this concept on a few threads...

(Also, look up a bunch of posts from a guy literally named Syphon Filter here on GAF)

I came to the conclusion so far that a new SF wouldn't work today (...but I would love to get convinced otherwise by a bright new idea.)

Besides the fact that the franchise is uncomfortably named after an ethnic cleansing bomb (chilling concept for a spy thriller, but would be called cringe today,) the basic innovations of the gameplay would probably be rejected by modern gamers. SF is unique for its lockon system and it's mechanics depend on a numeric percentage of hit accuracy in various live conditions; this probably wouldn't fly today, neither hardcore nor casual shooter gamers would accept a bullet missing even though they have the hitdot right on the head. (I know the PSP games got around this and have DualShock aiming, they are good games for PSP games but they don't do anything special; I still haven't played my copy of Days Gone but it didn't add anything mechanically unique that I know of?) If they just rebooted it or remade it as a modern TPS without anything unique about the series, then why bother with the Syphon Filter name at all when the brand name hasn't been hot for 25 years?

I think Sony adding a spy thriller to its portfolio would be good, I even think Eidetic/Bend Studio (the makers of all the SF games, from the first PS1 games to the PSP ones) could do a good job again in that genre, but I don't see a lot of future in bringing back the Syphon Filter name or characters anymore. I think everybody involved would have a better outlook if they did something new.

thanks i didnt know there were threads about it.

i think it can work, just need the right studio for it without too much influence from "karens".

a splinter cell/metal gear/james bond hybrid or something, doesnt need to be 1:1 syphon filter, they can reimagine it a bit i love a good spy/agent game with a decent story.

also the selective type of bomb/gas using DNA is used in one of the more recent james bond movies if i remember correctly.

i mostly played the original ps1 syphon filter games.
i have the PSP ones but i havent played them.
i got a free upgrade to the PS5 version for the PSP games, i should play them one of these days but i have an enormous backlog.

I might be wrong but I think the second game supports PSLINK

Unfortunately, I am seeing conflicting reports about PSLINK support (thanks, halucinating AI taking over the future of search...), and when I look up on MobyGames (pretty much the only site left I trust), I don't see that feature in the spec sheet for SF2 or SF3.

Would be good if it did have it, online multiplayer would be a lot easier to patch in with a dedicated device-to-device mode. However, hackers have done a lot (a fork of the Perfect Dark decomp has multiplayer, so there's precedent, although we will have to see if Syphon Filter has as dedicated a modding community as some other big games.)

Multiplayer didn't start here until Syphon Filter 2, so IMO, let them perfect the basics of the engine decompiler (and maybe add a few more comforts and fancy effects) of the first game, then the sequels can be done building on that.

I'd love a good spy/agent game too, but I think it'd carry too much baggage if they made such a game with the Syphon Filter name.

For new fans, they'd be asking questions about how much of the old games they'd need to play to jump in. For old fans, they'd be frustrated by the changes it'd probably have to make to the formula, and also the disconnect from the cliffhanger Logan's Shadow ending (if fans actually played those two; not all PS console gamers crossed over to the portables even though there are core if not canon franchise extensions on each.) And for Sony, they could have a hard time justifying AAA production effort into a franchise which has moved only 8mil units worldwide (40% of which was all the first two games back in '99/2000.)

(...I also don't know if the "Syphon Filter" brand name promises a decent story? I think Bend did a good job, but there's very little I remember about the story in any of the 6 mainline games in the franchise. Also, lots of people make fun of Gabe's voice actor, so a reboot would be in a hard place of either satisfying only old fans by keeping John Chacon or pissing fans off by switching him out.)

But again, if they try it, I'd line up.
