Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

Thats pretty much what I want from nintendo. I want to play Zelda and Mario with a normal gamepad not a wiimote or frankenstein iPad. I just hope they support it unlike the classic pad on Wii that only saw use with Goldeneye and VC games.

Whats the consensus on the old one?

Looks bad, but has a great feel in the hand. Good for Monster Hunter even if hands sort of cramp from both thumbs being on the thumb sticks.

Oooh, I hope we can use this new controller with Wii games.

it has a mini usb slot that means is going to have a rechargeable battery like the ps3 controller , which is awesome and not cool at the same time. hopping that the battery light changes color like the 3ds/ds ones beacue I always forget to charge ps3 controllers and they come with a small usb cable(will have to buy a long usb cables(checking cable prices: 2 dollars for a 15 ft cable , monoprice is so awesome)

The 360 and Wii U Pro pads looking almost exactly the same but having the A/B and X/Y buttons reversed is going to be annoying and confusing if you are going back and forth.

The Wii U Gamepad offers the exact same functionality as this thing as far as I can see, right down to the layout, so not much use for it. I guess it's good for local multiplayer games with traditional controls.

I like it though.

This...was unexpected.

In the video it was mentioned that it would be great for "longer periods of play" and for multiplatform titles.

I'm not exactly sure how this helps multiplatform titles since I'd assume they'd have to develop something to show up on the screen...or perhaps the touch screen would display the Wii U OS messaging system if no "game signal" is sent to the pad?

Crazy stuff!

Will this be wired, have rumble and it own battery pack? But 4 the lights under the controller is cool

Part of me wonders if they had to arrange the sticks that way due to legal issues. Because if the buttons and right stick were flipped it would look almost exactly like an Xbox 360 controller. Or their just trying to keep parity with the Wii U Gamepad.

I think this is the obvious reason. What does anyone else think?

No excuses about "too complex" now, right? (but I'm sure there will be some excuse)

This was the most disappointing part of the stream for me. I don't really like the 360 controller, and I'm sure if given the opportunity to choose between making a brand new, unique control scheme to utilize the wii remote or stick with the old method and do straight ports third parties will all choose the lazy route.

Is the thread where I should be outraged that somebody copied the other? If the controller feels good in your hand and allow for varied mapping then I don't care.

Why are people saying this controller should be included with the console? To me this just screams niche extra controller. It has exactly the same buttons as the tablet so there is no game that you would be able to play with this controller that you couldn't also play with the tablet controller so why is it at all important to include it as a default controller?

button placement looks weird. but we are spoiled too much by the 360 controller. so no judgement here until i get my hands on it.

I don't get the complaints about the right stick. It's not like your right thumb is any different from your left thumb. Plus MS probably has some sort of obscure patent on that sort of thing.
Moving your thumb down to hit buttons is irritating and unusual. For instance, doing it on the 360 controller and 3DS for the d-pad hurts my hand after a while. Hope it becomes automatic at some point or is at least comfy.

I like it. It's like the CC Pro and 360 controller had a baby. I don't think the button placement will be a problem as long as the controller is as small as or smaller than the 360 controller and not as big as The Duke. I can reach everything on the 360 controller just fine.

I'm wondering if this will also have the Wiimote's gyro sensors. It would be awesome if I could use this on old Wii games too. Maybe to play Punch-Out!! and Donkey Kong Country Returns with a real controller.

Yeah--if the stick and buttons were reversed it would look almost identical.

Yea its fine right now, but if they are really underpowered against Sony/MS they lose their special feature. The big reason why the Wii was as good as it was is because devs didn't have a choice but to support it (for the most part).

I just find the big selling point of the WiiU being optional a peculiar choice for Nintendo

It's not optional unless the Pro Controller is bundled in, which it almost surely won't be.

Controller looks nice, but now im more beginning to wonder. Will the wiimote and nunchuck still be used? Or only for backwards compatibility?

I was gonna complain about the button placement, but if the original CCPro can be used I'd have both configurations available :D

Felt like a cheap and light piece of plastic.
Really happy with the new design, hope it's a lot weightier.

It should since attachments to the Wii controller were pretty empty inside because most of the internals were inside the Wiimote, and since this new controller is used by itself it should weight about the same as a 360 controller.

because people gives a shit about the expensive tablet?

Hope Nintendo took some notes from Sony's PS Vita(and original DS) and made the D-pad clickable(and hopefully the rest of the buttons too).

Yeah this is my first thought, though I have faith that Nintendo knows how to make a decent controller.

I mean the Wii U pad looks pretty uncomfy but apparently it's not the case when you actually get to use it, so.

You will have to buy it, so if it is no good there will be a 3rd party alternative day 1.

Not a big drama.
I'm not that optimistic about an immediate third party alternative in this day and age. Took forever for unofficial Wii controllers to pop up.

Ugh I really hate how most people just follow with whatever Nintendo does. I understand this controller allows third party devs to port games to the Wii U but what's supposed to be different between 360/PS3 and Wii U is the touchscreen in the controller, if third party games don't use the touchscreen then why would I even want to buy the game on the Wii U? That would be like making a 3DS game without the use of the bottom screen. We know third parties won't be spending more money on making the wii u version of their game look much better than the 360/PS3 version so the only difference would have been the touchscreen.

Nope, those are also used. WiiU is looking to be a clusterfuck of control methods, but I imagine that only a few games (mostly Nintendo titles) will take advantage of the whole "one player with table, four with remotes" type thing.

I take but what I said about the face button placement. It mimics the touch controller which is a good thing. I doubt it will kill the hands, should be good stuff.
