You can try, but in my experience, the wireless point is generally deeper inside, near the games section. If it's working at all. YMMV.

You have to be playing with the town doors open so that people can jump in.

You can leave the gate open if your 3DS with the game is on, yeah. It closes if it's off though. But if it's like WW, you can be in sleep mode with your gate open.
