You know what's really fucking funny? I've been watching BoxOfficeMojo's all time list, and I've noticed that not only did Sony adjust its numbers as Avatar approached, but Disney did the same for Infinity War, The Force Awakens and Endgame. All three have jumped up by several million dollars.

Don't let anyone tell you that the filmmakers and teams behind these top-grossing films don't care. They most assuredly do. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Passed $2 billion in six weeks after grossing $56.3M (-36.7% drop from last week) overseas this weekend & an estimated $20M (-40% drop from last week) at the domestic box office.

6th highest grossing film of all time rn, will pass Infinity War & Force Awakens this week to become the 4th highest-grossing film of all time.

In celebration of Avatar 2 crossing 2 billion, we should all find the worst hot takes from this forum and post them here in this thread. There are so many doozies to choose from.

Also, let's review what Avatar 2 went up against, since "it didn't have any competition" seems to be the latest limp-dick attempt to undermine its success:
  • Was originally scheduled to go head-to-head with Shazam 2 and Super Mario Bros.
    • Both movies vacated their spots.
  • Released the same weekend that the World Cup finale was taking place.
  • Released as COVID was, once again, decimating China.
  • Went up against a once in a generation Bomb Cyclone, which impacted 80% of the United States.
  • Could not release in Russia, where the original grossed 100+ million.
So what's critique now? Not as big as the 1st one? I guess pre and post-pandemic is too difficult a concept for some of GAF's brainiacs to fully comprehend, so I will spell it out in caps:

THE THEATER BUSINESS HAS BEEN IN BIG TROUBLE SINCE 2020; MANY CHAINS HAVE SHUT DOWN LOCATIONS, AND AUDIENCES HAVE AN EXPECTATION THAT EVERYTHING GOES TO STREAMING.

I do hope that helps. :messenger_sunglasses:

The third one will probably topple the first Avatar as the most lucrative film ever.

Funnily enough, the avatar memes started coming out on tiktok right around the time Avatar 2 came out as zoomers finally found Avatar and ended up falling for Jake Sully of all people. there were a lot of thirsty tiktoks and some even made the news.

my youtube shorts feed is almost always features avatar 2 shorts and the movie hasnt even come out on bluray yet. its just cam stuff.

If this is the Avatar 3 design, it's going to get a lot worse. Pic is from a Weta video about costumes. The art book has a chapter on costumes but this is not in it.

So worse , so worse , A3 will flop 🤣 surely. Doesn’t look that bad imo .. but it’s probably just 1 of the million concepts.

Avatar nominated for 4 Oscars; Cameron snubbed for Directing nomination at the Oscars.

https://deadline.com/2023/01/2023-o...anchise-complicated-oscar-journey-1235238781/

In the wake of the breathtaking Avatar: The Way of Water soaring past the $2 billion global gross mark, the James Cameron-directed epic scored a best picture nomination, along with noms for production design, sound and visual effects. The snub of Cameron’s monumental achievement in the best director category continues the franchise’s complex relationship with Oscar.

This was on the cards the moment he split it into two movies.
It's still pretty absurd. It's not like that is the best script category.

The academy claiming that all the directors listed were more impactful in their job as director than Cameron is a joke. The guy worked on it for a decade, and no other director could have accomplished it. Not like it's a win, but at least a nomination.

Directors are actually chosen almost exclusively by the Directors Guild. Its why whoever wins the Directors Guild Award almost always wins the Oscars. So he was shunned by his fellow directors.

I personally wouldve chosen him over Spielberg who has no business being nominated for Fablemans. West Side Story sure, but Fabelmans? Im hoping Martin Macdonough wins.

I think Ruben Östlund is a terrible choice,

Saw it for the first time last weekend, in 3D.

Absolutely phenomenal stuff. Loved it. Like TG:M, I could nitpick it for plot or technicalities, but as an experience, it's in a league of its own.

10/10 (y)(y)

It may follow LOTR where they dump every award imaginable on them after the last movie comes out. Of course that's assuming that the quality stays the same.
I presume this is the case. With ROTK, the Academy paid interest on three unbelievably well-made films. I doubt Cameron's got more in him after Avatar 5, so, I suspect Avatar 5 gets all the awards as Cameron's sign off.

This movie was so fucking good in IMAX 3D. Hoping the next one has the high framerate for the whole film instead of cutting around because that was honestly my only complaint.

Loved how they incorporated the Maōri influences as well into the new tribe so well. Incredible film making production cinematography just everything all around top notch.

Grossed $1.4M domestically & $7.4M overseas yesterday for a total of $8.8M, worldwide gross is now at $2.055B, 5th highest grossing movie of all time now after passing Infinity War ($2.052B).

Force Awakens ($2.071B) falls on Saturday or Sunday.

What did they say
they had this insane bet thread about how Avatar 2 will hit $2.5 billion. made because everyone there is a marvel fan and they thought no one cared about Avatar because it had no memes or pop culture significance.

everyone took up the bet because even $2.5 billion seemed crazy at the time. then it actually looked like it would $2.5 billion and now it will fall just short so those same people who kept saying no one cares about avatar will now claim victory.

I mean, they can't be happy that it has topped every single Marvel movie, sans Endgame. What's their rationale there?

'Oh, well, Endgame is the best Marvel movie ever!"

Nobody believes that! :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

It can still get there with a re-release in China.

It's official: 'Avatar: The Way of Water' moves past 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' to claim the #4 spot on the All Time WW list.

https://deadline.com/2023/01/avatar...s-global-box-office-james-cameron-1235243382/

Through Friday, the worldwide gross on the 20th Century Studios/Disney/Lightstorm epic Avatar sequel is $2,074.8M, overtaking Force Awakens’ $2.071B. This means that Cameron has three of the top four movies ever globally alongside the original Avatar at No. 1 and Titanic at No. 3. Avatar: The Way of Water will top Titanic in the coming week or so on a global basis. However, Paramount is doing a Titanic domestic rerelease in time for Valentine’s Day, and Disney is also handling offshore before Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania gets going, so there could be some jockeying ahead as we noted on Thursday.

I think #4 is where it stays, since Titanic will undoubtedly add a very nice chunk of change when it re-re-releases on 2/8/23...with Disney pulling in the offshore take.

Remember when Disney's stock fell ~5% after the first weekend for this movie? It bottomed out closely thereafter and is now up ~30% since then. Wonder how much of the increase is due to this movie doing as well as it has.

I'll be curious to see how much Titanic pulls in with its re-release. Cameron now having 3/4 top Box Office hits of all time is something else though.

So if it does pass $2.2B by February 9, it’ll beat Titanic ($2.194B as of right now) a day before it gets re-released & then they’ll duke it out for the #3 spot again lol.

Finally got a chance to watch it yesterday.
Overall pretty similar to the first one: Amazing production values, awesome world in which you can really tell a lot of work and passion went into the creature, tech and environmental design, some of the best use of 3D in the industry and the some of the best visual effects ever, but a mediocre cookie cutter story.

I could go into detail about the issues I had with the plot but to be honest it doesn't really matter that much because as a movie going experience this was still miles ahead of everything released in recent years. There's been plenty of better movies with more compelling plots and characters but I can enjoy them at home on a nice OLED TV. This one actually made me glad I went to watch it in IMAX and aside from DUNE2 I doubt there's going to be many movies that will get me to go to the theater until Avatar 3.

The only thing regarding the visuals that I'm a bit split on is the high framerate. The fluidity is nice to an extent but it also makes everything look a bit more fake and videogamey, also I think they should stick to a consistent framerate, either make the entire movie high framerate or none of it, constantly switching was a bit jarring

Say what you will about Avatar 2's plot, but at least the main characters don't spend their time chasing MacGuffins, like the map to Luke Skywalker, or some gems for a glove. Sure, you've got Scoresby with the amrita, but holy hell do they go to great lengths to show you what entails the collection of that.

People always throw the "thin" plot critique at Avatar, but I think those same people are passing off a lack of, perhaps, plot intricacy, for simplicity...and those aren't the same things at all.

Even intricate plots can be woven on the basis of simplistic themes and stories. This is also generally why you don't see people listing a film they find to be more nuanced and complex than Avatar when critiquing it, because they know damn well any movie they cite as being more complex can be broken down easily, and therefore won't risk the debate.
