[Best Buy] Trade in Any Laptop for $75 Credit*

As long as it boots that's all that matters. Does it look like windows? Can you go to the system about section and it says what version of windows you have? If so I think you'll be fine.

I spent most all of today clearing my HP DV6 that I got in 2007 and man did the reset take forever on that thing. Honestly took 5 hours for the poor 300gb hdd... sad machine did me well until the end.

The guy I dealt with was trying to tell me that it has to power on without being plugged in. I told him it doesn't say that anywhere on the website and he briefly chatted with his supervisor and said ok, it just has to power on.
The website though says the store can create any damn limits they want :)

Where in Best buy do you go to take your laptop to trade in for the $75 gift card?

I went to customer service. I think geek squad can do it too. In my best buy, that was the same location basically anyway.

They gave me $155 for a 7 year old pentium HP with 4 GB ram and a 128 GB SSD. Not sure if the guy screwed up, but that computer was only like 400 total when I got it.

I spent a couple of hours getting it running again - had to open it up to get the cpu fan spinning and basically dismantled and re-assembled it.

Definitely worth the time and effort!

System doesn't lock you out of doing multiples. The only way they find out is if they hack into your phone's GPS history and then use their CSI skills to enhance a reflection from a car in the parking lot at long john silvers across the street.

Just try at another location and you should be fine. Just note that the coupons don't stack on the Samsung laptop. Some people think it does for some reason or another.

Well, I have at least 3 more laptops to try so I guess I'll find out. Otherwise I might have to recruit my parents...

We should compare who has the oldest working laptop to turn in. I have a 2002 Toshiba Portege 3505 with Pentium III 1.33GHz and 512MB 100MHz SDRAM that still boots that I'm gonna try tomorrow. Beat that. :D

So does the one trade in per customer mean you can only trade in one laptop to take advantage of the deal or that you can only trade in one per actual customer? Me and my gf both have old laptops sitting around that meet the requirements but wanna know if we'll be able to take them in during one trip together or have do it separately.

One per person per store so if you and your GF go at the same time you should be able to do 2 laptops.

I myself have 4 more working old devices I can try:

- Toshiba Portege 3505 (2002 - Pentium III M)
- Toshiba Portege M700 (2008 - Core 2 Duo)
- Dell Latitude 10 (2013 - Atom Z2760)
- HP Elitebook 2740p (2007 - 1st gen i7)

If I play my cards right, I might get like $150+ for that 2740p. It would be HILARIOUS if they end up taking the Portege 3505...

I've got a Dell Inspiron that works great, but the screen has a see through green band going vertically down the screen. Is that a deal breaker?

I have an old Toshiba Tecra that boots to 98 with a good battery. The trade in calculator takes it as other windows.
Anyone trade in anything like that?

*No cracked screens or water damage.

As long as it can boot into Windows (or another OS) you should be good. There's a thread about it on SlickDeals where people have been trading in 20+ year old laptops. Here's the Reddit thread I've been following.

https://tradein.bestbuy.com/client/#/catalog/product-families/laptops

Edit: it's 1 per customer and they'll take your name at the store to prevent people from double-dipping. I believe going to another store will still work fine according to Reddit/SlickDeals, but YMMV.

I have an old Dell laptop that I've been meaning to recycle. Maybe this will work and I can get $75 to save for an Xbox One X...

EDIT: It's saying $85.50. I know what I'm doing tomorrow... once I delete the porn from the hard drive...

My stepdad has a Sony laptop I might take in, but I need to find it. My mom had a super small, super shitty pink Acer. Don't even know if it's eligible but I know it still works.

Thanks for the heads up, OP. I took in a 10-year-old Dell Inspiron this morning. It had a bad battery, but since it booted successfully I still got the $75 for it.

Hmmm. I do have a Sony laptop from 2012 that I don't use anymore but it does have Sony Vegas, which came pre-installed and I'd like to keep. Anyone know if it's possible to move it to my new laptop?

So what are people's experiences with Best Buy checking and verifying that it boots to some OS?

I have an old Windows 2000 laptop that boots to "No OS found". I don't think it can boot from USB. Wondering if I should still try to take it to Best Buy.

My stores checks for boot. You need to just get an OS on there somehow. If you can't install via USB drive, you need to take the HDD out, install OS it via another machine, and then stick it back in. A bit of work for $75 but if you have time...

Will they accept laptops that have to be plugged in to turn on? My battery's bad but it does turn on if it's plugged in.

So, at work we're required to get new laptops from IT every 2-3 years and we always get the option to buy our older notebooks for $1 to $40 depending on condition. Lucked out having 3 i7 lenovos I bought from work just sitting around collecting dust, each worth $125. Gonna visit my local store after work with some friends and turn them all in for credit.

Figure I'll finally get Arms and buy my crew the season pass for Ghost Recon: Wildlands since we're having a blast playing it currently.

My 2004 Averatec got accepted without any hassle this time.

Now I guess I should decide whether or not to offload my 2009-ish Eee PC. I don't use it that much and it's stuck with Windows XP (so I wouldn't risk taking it online), but it's been somewhat nice to keep around for offline use.

I've got a 10 year old Gateway laptop I bought refurbished I'm gonna try tomorrow. That thing came with Vista, free upgrade to 7, which then got a free upgrade to 10. First legit copy of Windows I ever had and 10 years later it still works. TBH I've been trying to find a place to just recycle this thing but I'll take a free $75 GC

Will they take a Surface Pro 2 or is that considered a tablet? Complete wish a bent kickstand and just shit condition lol. Gave it to my little brother once I got my Pro 4 and since then he's upgraded so this thing has just been collecting dust and getting beat up.

This seems to be hit or miss. One store checked, one didn't. Worth a shot.

Called the store and they said "it has to be fully functional" which doesn't make any sense, it is functional, the battery just won't charge anymore but it does have a charger. I'm doing it online and it says it'll work though so I'm going to ship it off. I've already given it a factory reset since I don't use it so worst case, they'll just deny it so whatever happens isn't a big deal. Hopefully it's accepted.

Wow. There's a name I haven't heard in a very long time.

Going to set up a few old laptops with Mint this weekend. To be clear, the "one coupon per transaction" refers to the trade-in itself and not the gift cards, right? So if you trade multiple laptops in, those gift cards can stack?

They did this a while back (like 6 years ago) when I was a Geek Squad agent, a lot of people took advantage of it to upgrade. Was a great promo.

I traded in 2 laptops, one of them with a battery that doesn't charge. I turned on the other one and the guy thanked me for having one charged and had no problem with the one that had to be plugged in. That makes me think most people are bringing them in with dead batteries and they don't have the time to bother waiting around to see. Hopefully your store works the same.

I have an 11-year-old Compaq Presario Laptop that would shut down after 5-6 mins powering up due to a bad graphics card. The Windows XP desktop would still show up then shut down automatically after 5-6 mins.

Hope Best Buy will accept this....

The guy who processed mine didn't even touch the keyboard or touchpad. He didn't even look at it past boot.
