Dead Cells trailer - Castlevania meets permadeath, a vibrant pixel art "roguevania"

I would love to play this game but I'm not a fan of perma-death.

I hope Motion Twin gives us an option to play DC without PD if and when it comes to consoles.

It's not so much perma-death in the traditional sense, and is a core part off the game. Like, I'm not entirely sure a no-death run is even possible with how some things work.

When it'll be out of early access anyone knows? Would love to check it out but I don't touch early access games.

That's a good rule to have in general but this game is polished and already has a lot of content. I see the rest of the additions as free DLC basically because the game is already so good.

Put around 10 hours into this.

This is a good game, I just wish I could erase the whip from this game. Never found many scenarios where it was useful for me :|

Finally beat the watcher for the first time. Ended the run with over 50k gold. Next run i'm gonna be fat stacked.

I had one i described on the last page where the whip did 4x damage but i took 2x and +1 str so it 1 hit everything in existence. I beat the first boss in like 8 hits. Got the cheevo for no damage as well lol

Is there any way to remove items from the pool ala Crypt of the Necrodancer? Broadsword gots to go.

Nope :(

if you get the special that makes you go behind your opponent, it's one of my favorite combo of the gamne...just teleport behind an opponent and brodsword him to death..you already do tons of damage normally, but with the bonus from the special you pretty much instakill anything

never got very lucky with it, closest thing to a good whip I got was 2x times dmg, but the dps wasn't good enough to justify getting hit with double

Ok I finally got around to picking this up...

HOLY SHIT. It's so good. I am legit surprised. Ok back to playing.

This game is unhealthy.

I had a day off and figured I'd jump in for 1 game. I was having a good run... and then a series of unfortunate events caused me to die to a fucking exploding bat.

So I started another run.
And another.
And another.....

AAAAAARG. It's so good. But also so very punishing. I found I can make it to the last few levels regularly. I've beaten it twice so far.

I think I'm going to start a new playthrough though and only unlock the items I think are worthwhile. I hate starting with the broadsword or nutcracker. And now that I've unlocked the cursed sword, I sure as shit don't ever want to start with that one.

You can not as far as i am aware.

However once you get familiar with the game, you can restart and just "pick & choose" which plans/blueprints for weapons you will be turning in. Resulting in only having desired equipment in rotation.

Worked for me. It looks alright.

Lets get a console release!

I realize this is an old post, but I was just thinking this would be great on console. But they probably won't do that while it's in early access.

I got a Steam Link though so I can play this on my TV in the living room. So far, Steam Link is perfect for giving my PC that console experience. And this game is perfect for that.

I'm sad that it's not released for mac yet :(

I'm on vacation for 3 weeks and it would have been so perfect on my Macbook in the evenings when the kids fall asleep after a long day outside

:/

The electric whip? I love that. Great for annoying flying enemies, including the final boss. I beat the last boss twice and it was much easier with the electric whip.

The other whips though... I do not care for. They attack too slow.

Found two cursed chests back to back. Geared and buffed me up real nice.

Got hit by a bomb after killing 19 enemies. That woulda been a good run lol.

My best runs are when I find at least 3 cursed chests on the course of the run. So long as I end up with about 8 strength and at least 750 health (level 6 I think), then I can beat The Watcher consistently. Just did it with a balanced blade, fire brands, ivy grenade, and ice bomb. Definitely not ideal for that fight but it still wasn't too hard.

I'll see if there are any more blueprints for me to unlock, then give the game a break until the next update.

I have only just started and haven't gotten as far as you have, but I find that I do a fair bit better when finding more than one cursed chest. I like the risk vs reward it offers, too. Lots of little touches in this game that make it special, imo. It really feels like a refined combination of a bunch of things I didn't even realize I wanted together in a package so expertly-designed until now.

Like, I love this game. It's doing things to me.

Finally caved and picked this up after seeing a fair amount of gameplay footage. I got all the way to the Fog Fjord on my first run. I was kind of shocked.

I'm loving this game even if I am not great at it. Should I just focus in upgrading a specific weapon or not? Also playing this on a keyboard is hard. Too bad I have no gamepad.

I went for the health and money upgrades, with some of the 1st tier weapon upgrades in between. I also went for the "random weapons at start" upgrade. I haven't done any of the 2nd tier upgrades yet. But if there's a weapon you like, don't unlock new weapons so you have a greater chance of randomly getting the one you want at the start.

Time to put this game down for a bit. It's starting to get too easy, which probably happens for everyone after a while.

Can skip to the Ossuary from The Prisoner Cells without trouble.
The Forgotten Sepulchar is no longer a challenge.
Beat the first boss without getting hit. Almost beat the last boss without getting hit, too (using a 2x damage weapon).

After you play for a while, you kinda realize which stats to prioritize and having a certain amount of health pretty much guarantees victory. The only time I die now is when I take cursed chests and get careless.

So lets hope we get some updates to make things more interesting. If anything, new levels would get me to come back.

I also think the 20% damage boost when fully upgrading a weapon is a bit too much.

Get a gamepad!! It's definitely a gamepad kind of game.

About upgrades: the first weapon upgrades are cheap and considerably effective, but after the 10% upgrade you see diminishing returns. I would advise getting the weapons you like using up to +10% and then concentrate on vials, money, and any powers/skills you like (again, only to +10%)

Once you have 3-4 vials, decent money retention, and skill potency, picking your fav weapons to boost to 20% makes sense, but not before then imo.

What weapons were you investing in? Because I'm almost 20 hours in and have a good handle on the gameplay but almost all of my weapons suck. Like, five hits to kill a regular enemy on the first level, suck.

This game has become my GOTY for 2017. It's just too amazing. I haven't been able to play anything else at home. On-the-go I rock my Switch, but as soon as I get home it's 100% about Dead Cells.

Why is it so good??

Yep. I was addicted to this game for the last 3 weeks. Managed to finish 2 runs but still unable to go through the Forgotten Sepulcher.

I've gotten used to playing on a keyboard but I really need to get a gamepad. Wish this would come to the Switch.

It would be a perfect Switch game for sure.

Is it just me or is the game running poorly right now?

It was running fine at a steady 60 fps a few months ago, but now I'm noticing stuttering every few seconds and I have no idea why.

I have non stop stuttering as well. It's very difficult to play at the moment since it freezes up right when a lot of action starts popping off.

Who's your daily? Patch Notes
Important features
Added the "Daily run" mode! Same level & loots for everyone, changing every day. You can try as many times as you want to rank up: only your best score is kept in the leaderboard.
A new ability is available at the Collector booth. It allows you to sell items lying on the ground and you don't want! Just long-press the "pick-up" button of your controller when in front of a useless item. It will be destroyed and turned into gold. This ability works on most weapons, active skills, talismans and food items.
Community suggestion Gold keeping has been completely rebalanced. Instead of "keep X% of your gold upon death", the new upgrade now allows you to "keep at max X gold upon death". It goes from keeping 3k gold up to 15k gold.
Added new achievements !
Speed combo: if you kill enemies quickly enough, you will be granted a temporary run speed boost. Keep killing enemies to maintain this advantage!
Many many minor ergonomic changes have been made to the hero movements to make your undead life easier (see below for more details). We fixed and adjusted many small things like: ladder transition speed, jump through thin platforms, hard to "grab" platforms etc.
Added the Items Altar : there is 2 items, but you can choose only one! Version 0.3.6
Added 2 new weapon blueprints and 1 new active skill blueprint as rewards for Daily Runs you complete (that is killing the boss). You can only get rewards once a day. The first reward is given on the first time you beat the Daily Run, the second one the fifth time and the last one the when you beat your tenth Daily Run. Version 0.3.9
Daily Run: Some items are now forbidden. You need to unlock them in the normal mode to use them in Daily Run mode.
Important note: we have plans to give you ways to "re-lock" items you have unlocked but don't want to see in normal mode, but it won't come before Update 4. Also, we'll also make sure that insanely rare drops are not a thing in Dead Cells: this drop system balance will also make it to the Update 4. Version 0.3.9

Balancing
The run timer is now paused when you are in a challenge room
You can now exit a ladder from the top faster by rolling on last second (see: http://gph.is/2tx5NQk )
Community suggestion It's now a little "harder" to grab ladders on-the-fly when playing with the sticks on a gamepad. This means that you need to move your stick further to UP or DOWN to grab a ladders, so it's not possible anymore to grab a ladder using LEFT+UP for example. This should reduce accidental ladder grabs during combats.
You should find precious gems a little more often on mobs.
The dive attack should now allow you to jump through thin platforms in relevant situations. Before this change, you may have sometime "missed" your dive attack when you tried to use it and jump through a thin platform at the same time (resulting in a very short dive attack on the spot).
Balanced Impaler spear damage (1st strike is more powerful, 2nd strike is a little bit less)
Fixed some situations where it was "difficult" to jump through a thin platform using double jumps.
Add some anticipation for the Watcher "bullet hell" attack
Community suggestion Repeater Crossbow is now an automatic weapon: you can keep your attack key pressed to shoot arrows. Its charge time is also twice faster and its damage have been balanced. Version 0.3.2
The Mechanical Spider grenade damage have been reduced. Version 0.3.2
The way the hero life scales has been slightly changed (you get +48% extra life each time you pick +1 LIFE, instead of +41%). Version 0.3.2

Level design
Enemies should no longer start in toxic in sewers (they can still fall it though)
Added many new variations to Promenade level design
We removed tons of useless ladders from the game (ie. ladders leading to platforms you could easily jump on). Note this should also reduce a lot issues like "accidentally grabbing ladders while trying to avoid this two gren.. omg omg NO NO NOOOO fuuuuuuuuuuuuu*"
Added new variations to Sewers level design
Added new variations for rooms that require Vine or Rub-rub runes
Changed the design of the large crypt in the Graveyard

Graphics & UI
Added an option (in Misc settings) to automatically cancel your dodge before falling from a platform. This won't trigger if you start your roll when you're close from the cliff.
Updated the collector exit door
Added extra particles to some heavy weapons, 'cause they are heavy you know
New skin for the grenadier (ennemy and bombs)
The Vine ladder is now more visible and readable
The mini-shop has been updated and Guillain, a new NPC, has been added
The level name will no longer display on Title Screen
Community suggestion Key mapping for next/previous is now configurable
New skin for the Runner ennemy
Community suggestion Added option for fullscreen mode (fullscreen or borderless) Version 0.3.2
Added the seed to the large Map view (it will be useful to us when you screenshot impossible or problematic levels) Version 0.3.2
Added infos about save slots in menu (last change date, etc.) Version 0.3.6
Improved performance in Promenade of the Condemned and Graveyard Version 0.3.6
Performance improvement of the fog rendering Version 0.3.7
Improved performance of camera zoom Version 0.3.8
Added a feedback to indicate when your speed buff is about to disappear. Version 0.3.9

Music & Sfx
Add Portal closing SFX
New musics for the weapon and food shops

Bug fixes
The Incomplete One will no longer hit you if he's frozen while jumping
Fixed an infinite lock that could occur during some cinematics (like "running against a wall forever").
Fixed a few rare "null access" crashes
Fixed a bug that made enemy grenades disappear in walls.
Fixed some issues with "bouncing" items Version 0.3.2
Renamed the French version of the Flying Biter mob. Version 0.3.2
Blueprints can no longer be stuck in a wall. Version 0.3.3
Pirate bombs can longer be triggered by throwing kunais on it or by dropping a turret in front of them. Version 0.3.5
Added support for DualShock 4 controller connected via the Sony USB Wireless adaptor Version 0.3.6
If you crouch or stand while using a bow or a crossbow, your character should animate accordingly. Version 0.3.7
We fixed a rare bug that could make enemies appear suddenly on screen, like if they were teleporting to abnormal positions.

Daily Run: Some items are now forbidden. You need to unlock them in the normal mode to use them in Daily Run mode.

What's the reasoning behind this? It's not like you're always guaranteed some overpowered item on every run. Games like Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac don't impose this limitation on dailies.

Felt some improvements on the performance after this update and things got a lot prettier with all the new enemy sprites. I also found a door on Ramparts I've never seen before, but it seems to do nothing for now.

But the biggest difference is the speed boost. This is perfect. Absolutely perfect mechanic that encourages me to play more aggressively and rewards for doing so. I love it.

Also, I take back what I said about the whip. That shit just carried me all the way from beginning to the Watcher.

Are the new monsters a weekend event thing or part of a new update? I bought the game earlier this week

Got to
The Watcher
today and got him to about half health. I wonder if he's the last boss? ;o

I played about 1-2h yesterday, is this game very early beta or will soon be release?

Will they add new content in the release version?

It's really really good but I was wondering about the lenght of the game
