Earth Sets a Temperature Record for the Third Straight Year

This is really happening.

New York Times said:
Marking another milestone for a changing planet, scientists reported on Wednesday that the Earth reached its highest temperature on record in 2016 — trouncing a record set only a year earlier, which beat one set in 2014. It is the first time in the modern era of global warming data that temperatures have blown past the previous record three years in a row.

The findings come two days before the inauguration of an American president who has called global warming a Chinese plot and vowed to roll back his predecessor's efforts to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases.

The data show that politicians cannot wish the problem away. The Earth is heating up, a point long beyond serious scientific dispute, but one becoming more evident as the records keep falling. Temperatures are heading toward levels that many experts believe will pose a profound threat to both the natural world and to human civilization.

In 2015 and 2016, the planetary warming was intensified by the weather pattern known as El Niño, in which the Pacific Ocean released a huge burst of energy and water vapor into the atmosphere. But the bigger factor in setting the records was the long-term trend of rising temperature, which scientists say is being driven by increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

”A single warm year is something of a curiosity," said Deke Arndt, chief of global climate monitoring for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. ”It's really the trend, and the fact that we're punching at the ceiling every year now, that is the real indicator that we're undergoing big changes."

If they weren't bought and paid for, I'd suggest spending a good couple of hours explaining to Republicans what climate trends mean.

It was like 68 last week and it's fucking January in Philadelphia. It's also just been not cold later and later/earlier into the year.

http://www.noaa.gov/news/2016-was-2nd-warmest-year-on-record-for-us

"The average U.S. temperature in 2016 was 54.9 degrees F (2.9 degrees F above average), which ranked as the second warmest year in 122 years of record-keeping. This is the 20th consecutive year the annual average temperature exceeded the average. Every state in the contiguous U.S. and Alaska experienced above-average annual temperatures, according to scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information."

Currently in the 50s most of this week in Pittsburgh (might hit the 60s). Typically it should be in the 30s or lower, with some sort of snow gains. Instead, we have been getting a lot of rain.

As sad as I am for the future, it's been kind of nice for broke me in the present not having crazy high heating bills.

I worry about this.
When El Nino passes, the following year will likely be ever so slightly cooler than it's preceding El Nino year. In spite of it of course being warmer than average anyways, I can picture the tweets now.

"Numbers show 2018 colder than 2017, so much for "global warming" Don't trust scientists, they're wrong, don't know what they're doing. Can't predict the weather, can't predict climate. Sad!"

Hey Rex Tillerson once told us that climate change is an engineering problem with an engineering solution. Good thing he'll be in the next administration to get this all squared away.

Constantly warming planet is warmer than it has ever been before.

In other news, water is wet
because the glaciers are melting.

You aren't going to convince some people no matter what. If they didn't choose this line of reasoning to disagree with climate science they'd just ignore it. Nothing'll change either way.

And the guy who is likely going to be the new head of the EPA....wanted to dismantle the EPA. This ought to be great.

There's no doubt of warming, but who's to say it's man made and not a natural cycle of the planet? We don't know what weather patterns were like 1000 years ago, maybe it's something that happens on its own?

All I know is Malaysia is hot as hell right now.

It's never a good thing when the sweat from your back travels down your anus and drips on your balls.

Here in the midwest this week is already feeling like Spring. High 40s up to 50 degrees this week. It's only January.

Fuck Al Gore
Chinese Hoax

Am I missing anything?

Things are just going to keep getting worse. More and more people will have to use their A/C for longer periods of time just compounding the rise in temperature.. It is a good thing there is no such thing as climate change.. right guys?

meanwhile here in Belgium it is cold enough to turn your privates blue .

i know Global warming is real but when you are standing outside in sub zero temp weather like today it does feel weird to say " the planet is warming up " with a straight face .

All of my fellow Midwest folks should enjoy the warm spell. We will be below freezing again this time next week. We are getting snow in Michigan next week.

Your warm winter probably doesn't have anything to do with global warming. Just as a cold one doesn't refute it.
