Fire Emblem 3 Houses?

Arsic

Loves his juicy stink trail scent
New to FE series entirely.

I have a switch 2.

Is 3 houses the best place to start? Or is there a different one you'd recommend for switch only options?

three houses rules but it does have a few elements lacking in other games in the series, since it does a bit of a social system persona thing. if you get attached to that you might be sad playing the other games.

I would start with the 3ds games if you can. 3 Houses is great too tho and my favorite of the Switch games. Engage has the best combat and the worst everything else.

3 Houses was the first and only FE that I bought. It was ok but I was ready for it to be over by the end. Never did a second playthrough. Wish it had some Switch 2 upgrades in terms of visuals & performance.

I don't know if you can go wrong with that or any of the recent-ish ones. I've played five or so, oldest being the Gamecube one, and they were all really good.
Ehh... Engage is one of the worst.
3 Houses is one of the best, if not the best.

Just keep in mind that 3 Houses is a bit different than the more "classic" FEs.
If you then want to jump into that Path of Radiance for example is quite good.

I know quite a few people liked it, but I found 3 Houses to be insanely bloated. Easily the strongest example of Nintendo's recent addition to bloat of anything they've done. It's Fire Emblem, but with a whole Persona-esque school system punctuating the actual battles. The school segments are boring and could be omitted entirely, and they completely ruin the pacing. I lost interest and never finished it.

Personally, I've always been much more of a fan of the GC Path of Radiance, and the GBA/DS era games. Awakening on the 3DS was the last FE I really liked. Those were all much more focused games that gave you satisfying combat, story, and (mostly) great aesthetics. After that, they started padding it with a lot of unnecessary noise.

My problem with 3 houses was that there was too much social side bloat, and it really felt like the battles, combat, strategy and difficulty had been toned down.
I prefer the more combat, strategy focused Fire Emblems. I preferred Emblem tbh, and the 3DS ones are even better, particularly Awakening and Fates

Hear me out.

Start with Fire Emblem Engage then play Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Engage is a good game, but you won't appreciate it after playing Three Houses because Three Houses is a much better game.

3H is a great starting point to get your feet wet. First few times playing it is great, but as others has said it's too bloated for numerous replays.

But the initial experience is well worth the price of admission, and even more so now that it's on sale.

3 houses it is since it's on sale then.
Hope you'll enjoy yourself.

Also, he should keep in mind that Path of Radiance is only half the story and the other half will not come anytime soon since it was an Wii game.

I'm more of a Blazing Sword, Sacred Stones or Shadows of Valentia guy myself.

3 Houses goes too heavy into Persona-lite social elements. Really hate the whole high school and time management systems.

I'd say if Switch era Fire Emblem is the only choices then it's just 3 Houses.

Warriors can be skipped and Engage has the best gameplay to date but terrible everything else.

If you like Persona, Three Houses is probably the best place to start.

If you don't like Persona, Awakening is the best place to start.

Engage has amazing gameplay but oh my gosh the story is so horrible. It's probably the only game I'd ever suggest is worth playing but completely skipping all cutscenes and dialog.

Totally agree with you, but he's asking for Switch 2, though.

Would you go for Engage if he doesn't like Persona?

I'm wondering if OP should just wait it out a couple months for Fortune's Weave? 60FPS Fire Emblem would be a hell of a start. We're not sure if it'll be good, though (in my mind it's already amazing).

Good point, yeah I would probably say wait for Fortune's Weave if you don't like Persona.

I think Nintendo is VERY confident in Fortune's Weave reviewing well, for example, it's only the second $80 game ever that isn't a Switch 2 version of an existing game.

Gameplay-wise, Engage is probably the best the series has been in a long while, but the story and characters were so bad that it really tarnished the overall experience. 3H is fantastic, though, especially the first time through. It's not as technically deep, but the characters and story will keep you way more engaged than Engage, assuming that's important to you.

Engage has the best gameplay but a typical anime type like story.
I personally never finished 3 houses, I found it tedious and just bogged down.
I'm really torn on the new one coming out, not sure what to expect but it seems it's going to be more 3H but we'll see

If you have NSO Expansion Pass, I'd say start with Fire Emblem (aka FE7 aka Blazing Blade) on GBA. It's the first game in the series to be released in the US, and is a great entry point.

Path of Radiance (NSO Gamecube) is another good entry point and some consider it the pinnacle of the series.

Path Of Radiance is good, but the game doesn't tell you that if someone dies you're not getting them back. At least I missed some stuff.

It also drags a bit at the end. But fun overall.

I have to agree with this. At least for Fire Emblem, the older games are where it's at. Three Houses was too "bloaty" for me as well, which is why I never bothered to finish it. And I've never touched Engage. I am worried that they will continue this trend with Fortune's Weave.

Got excited about the game being on sale as I've been wanting to play it, only to realise its a sale on the NA ESHOP.

GG. Least I've learned that nintendo does regional sales moving forward.

I liked Engage way better.
Yeah the story sucks and some of the character designs are terrible. But the gameplay and mission design were solid and half the game isn't some persona style social simulator like 3 houses.

3 Houses is the better of the Switch games -- Engage has a terrible gatcha mechanic that I personally hate. And yeah, as stated, the story and stuff isn't quite as good as other stuff.

I'd say the DS/3DS games are great and well worth going back to if you have a reliable way of playing em.

Be aware that every FE game gets terribly repetitive and every late game battle spams an amount of enemies into the maps that it just ends up as a big slog to waste as much of your time as possible, i wonder when they learn that smaller maps with less but more powerful enemies would make the whole series much more enjoyable.

Yeah, Path of Radiance is absolutely a great entry point to the series.
