I don't get why this is a surprise. MS has nowhere near the reach that Sony has with PlayStation. Of course NA (the United States to be specific) will always be the number one market for both MS and Sony but Sony cleans up everywhere else. It's why it was able to hang and then eclipse X360 last gen even when it launched a year after X360.
For Microsoft, yes. For Sony, I don't think that is or will always be the case. There are a lot of emerging markets where consoles still aren't a part of the home entertainment setup. Sony -- due to their presence in the movie, TV, and audio space -- are in
the best position to make PlayStation the home entertainment device in emerging markets. Morocco, Thailand, Tunisia, Colombia -- all markets that are being viewed, by a lot of companies, as places that will produce a lot of sales.
A lot of people don't know Microsoft for anything other than Windows, Bill Gates, and Office. Xbox has very low brand recognition. The numbers in Germany tell me that Microsoft's strategy to put their exclusives on PC is a good thing for their first-party software but a bad thing for Xbox hardware. They're not really helping the Xbox brand awareness by making Xbox games non-exclusive anymore are they?
