Since Jimbo took over in 2019 we've had the following initiatives pushed. I'm not saying he personally mandated each of them, but they did all occur under his watch:
- The largest acquisition spree in SIE's history, and they're not done yet
- Massive expansion across all of SIE's studios, with some going multi-project
- PlayStation Productions became a thing (10+ projects)
- PlayStation's current PC push
- PlayStation's push into mobile gaming (still pending)
- The push into live service gaming (10+ projects)
- The renewed Indie initiative
- The push into premium subscription services
- A renewed push into legacy games with PS1, PS2 and PSP games finding their way to modern consoles. We also have rumors that PS3 emulation is still being worked on at SIE.
The pandemic massively fucked up their plans both for software and hardware, so they're behind the PS4's sales curve right now. We know from Sony's own statements that they've taken steps to secure components and plan to surpass the PS4's sales curve next year. If Tom Hendersons leak is to be believed they're aiming for a ludicrous 30.5 million PS5's shipped next FY, so they're gonna be aggressive as fuck on that front. We're awaiting what their software lineup will be like beyond a few known quantities like Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Horizon CotM and TLOU MP. Plus third party deals like FF16, FF7 Rebirth, Forspoken, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin. The vast bulk of their software lineup are still unknown to us.
Jimbo is precisely the leader Sony needed to grow their business, expand their footprint into new areas and prepare the division for the future.
