Halo 5 Opening Cinematic

That was awesome! Loved it.

Can someone clear something up for me. Are the humans winning against the covenant now? I thought they made up and were friends (or stopped hostilities) after 3? I never played 4.

Game Fans - "Why are these Spartans so powerful!?"

Book Fans - "Finally 343i is showing the true capabilites of a Spartan."

i read a lot of the books and i never imagined them jumping from that high and landing perfectly fine only to ski down a mountain while blasting tons of sword elites, skating through covenant vehicles and blasting through rocks with their shields.

There's Covenant on the human side and Covenant on the Jul 'Mdama side.

Yeah I still recall an older book line something like Cortana saying "Chief saved a hostage kid from a bunker full of 20 elites, I still don't know how he managed that". It's great to see Osiris have the book levels of Spartan beast mode.

Dang, the Forerunner hate train got some major backlash, lol. I wish 343 woulda come up with some other kind of new alien force, not Patronizing British Transformers, but oh well.

There is no context in which this isn't fucking dumb.

there are different factions in covenant. Not all are with human.

Im completely lost...

Also, this is how the Spartans are supposed to be? Essentially invincible? Isnt there other levels of Spartan? Isnt the Cheif a Mark 2 or something and these are Mark 4? Please, I have not played a Halo game since 3 and that was a long time ago. Forigve my ignorance.

there are different fractions in covenant. Not all are with human.

Also, forgot to say thank you

Haven't read the books that cover this, but the covenant in Halo 4 is a splinter group of fanatics.

And just to bring that idea home there's a very subtle bit in the opening of Halo 4 where the Chief QTEs an elite swordsman down an elevator shaft before musing to Cortana "these covenant seem more fanatical than the ones we fought before". I still cringe at that line ;p

New covenant formed by Jul'mdama they hate the arbiter and want him dead.

Only in your world is that fucking dumb. Have you not seen the promethteans? That character goes along with the aesthetic design of the promethteans.

Promethean design is also bad, at least for something that's supposed to come from the same civilization that made the Forerunner architecture from CE-Reach.

Bleh, I feel like I'm getting way too negative right now though and I don't want to be that guy so I'll leave this alone now. Sorry! The cutscene looks great! I'm hyped!

Okay, so it's like this: the Covenant (as in, the prophet-led theocratic alien empire we fought the first three games) effectively died in Halo 3 with the Great Schism. However, not all of its former members were willing to abandon their religion. These have mostly flocked to Jul M'Dama's banner, and they make up the dudes you see them fighting. They call themselves the Covenant, but in terms of actual military might they're a pale shadow. The guys who stayed friendly to Humanity are the Arbiter's faction, the Swords of Sanghelios.

Chief (and the rest of Blue Team) are Spartan IIs, and Osiris is Spartan IVs, yeah. The Reach crew is primarily Spartan IIIs, except for Jorge, who was a II. They're not invincible, but this is seeing them at their best: dropped into the middle of a largely disorganized enemy, they've got air support, and they don't have to stop for even a moment. Just keep moving and kill anything in their way.

I've read Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx. Doesn't make what we're seeing here utterly silly.

Any sense of groundedness in this crazy high-concept sci fi world is thrown to the wind at the start of this s just very, very far removed from stuff like this:

http://youtu.be/Nl6VJyvI398

Which I couldn't possibly see happening in the same universe as Halo 5. Any sense of character stakes must seem perfunctory and forced after 5 weightless super spartans treat a covenant armada (heretics or not) like a bunch of aimless crash-test puppets.

Cheif and blue team are Spartan 2s, abducted genetically near-perfect kids with the most augmentations (and obviously training). Osiris are Spartan 4s, picked from a wider pool of consenting adults, often out of already badass programs like the ODSTs. The suits on the 4s make up for some of the lesser augmentations, letting them react as fast and be about as strong as the 2s, but outside the suits it would be domination.

The speed in the video seems more like what they should have always been like to me, since their reaction times are bolstered a few thousand times (counting both suit and augmentations together)

"Mark" pertains to the armor version, not the spartan generation.

The Prometheans look fucking stupid and I love Halo. One of my favorite quotes from a Halo 4 ViDoc was something like, "We don't want them to look like robots, because they're not robots." They look like Bionicles and out of place in the Halo universe. The Light Rifle is cool though.

Thanks guys, a bit clearer now.

Oh ok, so the Chief is still the badest of the badass then? Are there other Spartan 2s?

The forerunners/Prometheans were the most boring goddamn enemy ever in Halo 4. Takes a special kind of uninspired to make The Flood (H3 version) more fun to fight.

Blue team are all 2s, I don't know how many other 2s are left, I think very few but them if not only them. Cheif is the luckiest little shit alive, but there are 2s (or were, since most died) that are smarter, stronger, faster than him.

To be fair, I always thought this was kinda silly. One carbine shot kills a Spartan? Nah.

I can agree with this. I'm not against their design per se, but they were kind of a boring fight in 4. Excited for Halo 5.

there's a few spartan 2s left alive, some are with the chief. i dunno, maybe the new armor that the new spartans have make them better or on par with the older ones

So in the books the Spartan 2s essentially can destroy an entire force of enemies? They "made" lots of them?

Edit:
Can someone point me to a good lore site maybe so I dont ruin this thread with OT stuff, I dont want to do that for those interested in the more on topic stuff.

The rest of Chief's team are IIs, and Chief's arguably not even the most badass of them.

I think the comparison Frankie made was that in armor, one on one, a II and a IV are evenly matched. Outside of the armor, your average II will absolutely wreck your average IV. Hell, your average group of IVs.

Am I the only one who actually liked the Prometheans from a gameplay perspective? They were an interesting challenge and infinitely more fun to fight than the Halo 4 Covenant AI.

Yeah, I totally agree. I love a lot of the weapon animations too, though. And I think the Crawlers look cool enough. Everything else about the Forerunner baddies are not my cup of tea, though.

Halo 4's Covenant were dumb and couldn't see you from 4 feet away, unless you got in a vehicle and suddenly they all were MLG pros.

What's up with Locke though? The pizza i'm eating has more personality than him.

Is he really that much of a stick in the mud?

What do you want him to do? He's a military guy. They're not exactly comedians. You want him to be like the two robots in transformers?

To be fair, I always thought this was kinda silly. One carbine shot kills a Spartan? Nah.

All they had to do to fix this was have their shields flicker due to the radiation from the glassing and boom, it works. Or they could've made it an actual sniper shot rather than a needle rifle.

Oh well.

He gives Palmer a run for her money from what I've seen so far. I don't understand why 343 continually creates characters who continue to be as interesting as paint drying on the wall with overly self righteous attitudes and bugs up their asses.

I for one think it is great to see the Spartans depicted as they are, super soldiers who do extraordinary things. Like the chief delivering the bomb back top the covenant in H2, finally we get to have powers and abilities that change how we fight (aerial, ground pound etc) to accurately reflect the stories.
