I don't care about game devs

I don't give a damn about video game developers. I don't care about them as human beings, their well being, their jobs, their pay, their families, their lively hood. I don't care about lay offs, AI, Unions, crunch, sexual harassment or studio shutdowns.

I as a consumer only care about one thing: Is this game fun? I don't care about gaming as a medium out side of of me consuming it and I am sick of all the belly aching about game developers on the internet. To any and all game developers, get back in the kitchen and make me another game.

"I don't care about... Studio shutdowns."

So if the maker of your favourite game shutdown you wouldn't care? Huh

Some of the things you listed will have a direct effect on you "consuming it".

From their view, you distanced yourself from them, therefore, you care about them.

That's precisely how we treat any other group of professionals. Business is business. But I agree, this industry in particular historically had a lot of weird attention from the public that it shouldn't have, because it doesn't deserve it. People in the film or music industry aren't less important just because they don't design your next purple haired landwhale character for some hero shooter. The internet doesn't collectively fall into a hissy fit just because there's a wave of layoffs at GM or McDonald's

Team Microsoft Xbox would like to offer you the job, we welcome you with open arms 💪🟢

This industry is obsessed with talking about how hard poor developers have it, as if they were the most exploited people out there.
I don't have to deal with this crap with any other product I buy.

I'm more sympathetic with the builders having to stay under the sun for 8 hours a day with 40 degrees Celsius... who am I kidding and don't really care about them too.

I do, because those devs are the ones making the games I love and I want them to put their passion tho their games they make.

The greatest irony is these people work the cushiest first world jobs in the history of the world, and are paid handsomely for it, like 4x - 5x the average wage servant making their food and roofing their million dollar homes.

First they came for the game developers, and I did not speak out—because I was not a game developer.
Then they came for the indie creators, and I did not speak out—because I was not an indie creator.
Then they came for the esports pros, and I did not speak out—because I was not an esports pro.
Then they came for the players—and there was no one left to hit respawn.

Similar attitude so many people in my neighborhood took with one of our stores. "They got insurance, I don't care about those businesses or employees!" Store shuts down because everyone robbed it out of existence and all of a sudden "where am I going to shop?! It's a food desert! The system!!!!"

You ain't got to love no body but it doesn't hurt to wish good will on your fellow man, especially ones that produce something you enjoy.

I'll add this, despite my statement above I am in a bit of agreement with some of the OP's sentiment. I do get sick of outlets acting like developers are working in the salt mines or that crunch time is inherently evil. These grown mutha'fletchers can make their own decisions and move on if they really want to. They have their own agency, and if people like Sakurai want to work their aspirin half way to death that's on them. People who make amazing things in the world push beyond the average joes limits.

This, plus the fact that Western devs/voice actors in particular are so fucking whiny.

Bitching about games that flopped decades ago, insulting their customer base, crying about their failures instead of owning up to their mistakes, openly admitting that pushing political messages is more important to them than creating a quality product, etc. Only the gaming industry fetishize this bitchy attitude from grown """adults""".

What other industry allows top executives, engineers, or leaders to unironically spout Internet gibberish like "incel" or "gooner" during professional interviews?

What other industry or business allows you to make lame and pathetic excuses for failing to do your job at nice, cushy, white collar occupation making close to or exceeding six figures?

What other industry or business has bunch of slobbering fanboys bordering on cult members excusing said behavior and cheering it out (like here on Neogaf, Reddit, Resetera, PushSquare, etc)?

There's a reason why me and others say fuck these people in particular. They make shitty products no one wants, they get their asses fired, just like any other industry which is how it should be. The only times I feel kinda bad is when it's for games I like. No different than when someone's favorite sports team loses or a favorite restaurant is closed. We feel bad for a little while but then move on to a different one. I didn't like it when the Khazan developers, Neople was absorbed by their parent company, but at the end of the day, I supported them as best I could. I bought their game day one and enjoyed it. I also do the opposite and refuse to buy games from shitbag, aka lefty American/European developers.

I vote with my wallet at the end of the day.

Btw, if this is a roundabout way of saying "fuck those Xbox devs about to be fired" then:

That's true there is a very parasocial relationship with the gaming industry but to go as far as saying you

"don't care about them as human beings, their well being, their jobs, their pay, their families, their lively hood, sexual harassment or studio shutdowns."

Is just... I don't know, heartless. Even if it's for the people who make a kitchen sink we can at least have some empathy, no? It's not like anybody is asking the OP to do anything so where's the problem?

OP goes too far when he says he doesn't care about sexual harassment and doesn't care about their familes. I mean saying you don't care if someone is sexually harassed is pretty heartless.

Well, you care enough to type all that with such intense emotion, so...

I myself am indifferent to the developer's personal matter.
I care about them as much as I care about the random person who sits next to me on the previous bus journey; I wish them have a nice day and all but don't come tell me about your struggle or dreams.

Yeah, OP sounds a bit psychopathic. No one is asking you to do anything, but I think having some empathy is just a human thing.

There are already more great games existing than you could play in a lifetime. Maybe stick to those if you feel this way.

Based

Videogame industry is the only industry where it's completely normalized that you pay top dollar for a subpar, often incomplete or straight up broken product while at the same time being bombarded with sob stories about "brutal working conditions" and "we really tried our best but making games is difficult :( " and "sheesh there is so much pressure" and "making games is super expensive and completely unsustainable. Anyway look how we are rendering every face hair on this main character using realtime physics you literally only see when you use photo mode and zoom in 100000%" and "we censored that cleavage after outrage on Reddit and now our game sold like shit, how can this be?".

So many dev studios have completely lost the plot of what they're supposed to be doing.

Fuck off.

I'm not going to try to convince you to care about them, but you should at least have some respect for what they're trying to achieve for you.

Don't expect them to return the favour or listen to your requests, if that's your perspective.

It can already be an exhausting gig with all the BS they have deal with on a daily basis.

Part of why some studios in the west turned their backs on gamers, and got us into this slump its in right now, is because they chose to listen to folks like OP and assumed they represent the voice of the community.

Based, I do care about game developers, I love seeing them getting fired.

I get it, despite OP coming off kinda assholeish. I mean I feel bummed when a studio that I like closes or loses staff, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

My workplace has had 3 layoffs in the past 7 years and many of my colleagues were laid off, no one gives a fuck. And it's the same in every other workplace, there are layoffs and there is crunch.
Doesn't matter if you work in software engineering or are a retail worker.

But we in this forum are connected to the industry and we constantly read the news about it.
95% of other players have no idea these layoffs are going, which studios are getting closed, how many people lost their jobs, or how bad the crunch was to get their favorite game out.
