I don't think it's dead. But I think after the initial reactions, there might be some retooling happening to the visuals. The thing about this is that Aspyr has the source code for the old Macintosh port, and I don't think they are going to just outright cancel it. But who knows? Maybe Embracer is re-evaluating this one? They do know that they have something worthy here for a remaster.

Call me crazy or a brainrot infected GenZ dumbass but I don't like remasters of old ass games with clunky mechanics and frustrating gameplay that were made due to the hardware or whatever limitations they had at that time.

If you're remastering an old ass game, please remake it and change the gameplay and add a lot of QoL. Many of the fan favorites classics are popular due to the story and characters and music and "memories" and apart from the nostalgic old timers, hardly anyone wants to play these.

I like what SQ did with FF7 Remake, love what Capcom did with RE2/RE3/RE4 and is doing for the old games or Nintendo with Mario/Zelda . These are the stuff I want to play not Nightdive remasters or that awful Tomb Raider 1-6 collection which are so frustrating that I (many!) will just ignore the game/franchise.

Kick Aspyr to the curb and hand it over to Nightdive.

There is not a remaster out there that had Nightdives name on it more than Deus Ex.

I feel like Thief: The Dark Project is getting the remaster that fans have been hoping to see for a long time now. It looks faithful to the original while delivering all sorts of QOL enhancements. This is probably everything one could hope for.

The Deus Ex cancelled remaster from Aspy is a straight remaster being built from the old Macintosh port that Aspyr published back in 2002 or so (aspyre has access to a lot of old Macintosh source codes). It still uses a version of the classic UE1 engine. The QOL enhancements actually did sound really good (at least to me). But yeah, those new models and retooled lighting effects really clash badly:

The original Deus Ex is a seminal Warren Spector classic. The game sits on a high pedestal right alongside that other Spector classic: Thief: The dark Ages. There is still a lot of interest in the franchise.

But the game was rightfully slammed for its lackluster visual remastering. It really doesn't look good up against what Night Dive is doing with Thief and even SiN.

I feel like Thief The Dark Ages took the place of the Deus Ex Remaster in their release schedule. Even though the Deus Ex Remaster was planned for February 2027, and Thief remaster is planned for late 2026.

no, but they probably restarded the project, maybe throwing away all the stuff they've shown.
because everything they did show was basically a downgrade or looked uncanny.

you are the equivalent of someone on a cinefile forum telling everyone that you can't stand watching movies from before the 90s.

also hilarious that you mention Nintendo, when their "remakes" barely change the games at all (and arguably made games somewhat worse in some cases), and especially less than the changes done to the Tomb Raider collections, which added a completely new analog movement based control scheme. Especially Angel of Darkness was improved a lot

Comparing movies to games is wrong because a movie isn't interactive or has anything that you need to input apart from just watching it. Movies are the most accessible entertainment medium in the world.

Games on the other hand are defined by the gameplay, controls and mechanics which as I said is frustrating for newer players who have only played games that are modern and far accessible with a lot of QoL. They need to be accessible to many.

There's no way I care about it because I have never played the original. Only those who have played the original will understand but for new modern players its still is going to be a frustrating experience.

And I don't think I'm in minority because I don't see many remasters doing well at all? Most nightdive remasters go heavy on sale quickly and many other remasters are not made for everyone (see the charts) and nothing wrong if they cater to the select few who have played the original but I wonder how financially viable it is?

If Oblivion Remastered had released with the similar clunky combat and movement and no QoL, it wouldn't have done well. Same with RE2R, RE4R and similar. How many would have played a new FF7 without any of that gameplay polish and change? and even good remakes like Dead Space which is fantastic compared to the OG still couldn't sell enough.

people who say they can't watch movies older than the 90s exist btw... that's why I used them as an example.

so, in short, people who are retarded... gotcha...

the Oblivion remaster is literally worse in basically every way than the original. and there's no real quality of life improvements to speak of. all you get is a useless sprint button and terrible performance.

Resident Evil 4 is among the most ported games ever, because people buy it again every time.
Gen6, Gen7, Gen8, Gen9... 4 console generations got that game ported nearly 1 to 1 with no significant changes to speak of. it's also a better game in many ways to the remake, especially the controls are far better

I wish DX would get proper faithful (Gothic-like) remake. Remaster too, but remake especially. While unlikely, crazier things have happened (Gothic remake being case in point).
