an honest question: can we openly mock Nintendo with sarcastic and witty comments on this thread?...

I've always wanted to do it and feel like one of the cool kids on the internet, but I've seen users banned for that here... this thread seems "safe" in that matter.

I'm just not sure how it works... can we mock brands, but not users? what's exactly the "line" between being banned and not?...

please don't ban me, it's a legit question.

Yep, it almost appears as if Nintendo will dump the wii U and release a new console by fall of 2015/spring 2016

This seems like an assumption. They have Splatoon, Xenoblade, Yoshi, Kirby and Zelda, plus smaller stuff like Mario Maker. I'm sure there's more to come too. It's obviously not a rich, full line up to compare with the golden heyday of times gone by, but I don't think it signals a full-scale abandonment of the system.

It looks like writing on the wall at this point. Make Zelda a launch title(or maybe cross gen) and kill the system by next summer. From a business stand point Nintendo gains nothing by limping the Wii U into 2016/2017. If they had faith in the console I would assume we would see a much more aggressive stance this holiday(price cut, bundles, 2015 game announcements, system re disign, etc)

Or the third option which is to not bleed themselves out just to capture marketshare but focus on staying profitable and building on the goodwill of existing customers.

Businesses care a lot more about profitability than they do about marketshare, and 'pulling a sega' with repeated new hardware launches kills longterm viability of products.
EDIT:
Shit, it's only recently people have stopped saying "I'll wait for the ambassador free games" in relation to the WiiU, and that was only a soft value add of existing back catalog titles.

The Wii U will be replaced by holiday 2016 imo. They won't kill it next year but I have a tough time believing holiday 2016 isn't the goal right now, especially with Iwata's comments earlier this year that it will take about two years for Nintendo to "reinvent" or "redefine" video games or whatnot. That would imply a 2016 launch. Which makes sense. A four year span for the console makes sense at this point, as third party is gone and sales are awful and with the Gamepad there isn't much room for price cuts.

Personally I'm expecting a console that is marginally more powerful than Wii U. A "super Wii U" if you will. Capable enough to run Nintendo games in 1080p. Cheap enough to launch at $249.99 day one. Big console publishers won't be happy about it, but with similar architecture to their next handheld, the console should get whatever remaining Japanese handheld support Nintendo has left as it won't cost much to port. I expect that the console will launch with basically a Pro Controller (Gamepad dropped), but that Nintendo's next handheld will offer the same functionality as the Gamepad for an added incentive to purchase both devices.

Pretty solid list, but yeah, has a few games that were never actually confirmed or cancelled for Wii U.

- Biker Bash (rumour from 2012 based on some concept art)
- Delver's Drop (port was never confirmed)
- Demon Tribe (another rumour from 2012, never happened)
- Ghost Song (Kickstarter stretch goal failed)
- Gunlord (Indiegogo campaign failed)
- Pinball Arcade (cancelled)
- Saber Rider and the Star Sheriff (cancelled)
- Super Ubie Land (cancelled) (up: still happening)

Probably others, but eh.

The Wii U will get regular Nintendo third party titles next year, Just Dance, Disney, Lego etc

The 3DS is always like this, seems like the following year is going to be barren and then bam games announced galore. I'm sure the December and January Directs will be eventful for the 3DS and n3DS.

Wow, so the only actual "Third Party" publishers left on the Wii U are:

-Sega
-Ubisoft
-Warner Bros. interactive
-Bandai Namco
-Atlus

All the rest are Indie games, and some very promising looking ones to say the least.

Say the Third Parties release Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed 5, Far Cry 4, The Witcher 3, Destiny and the next Batman all on the Wii U, it looks nice as a "list" of games the system will have but the sales will all go to the other consoles due to too many reasons in the past and present with Nintendo and Third Party software to mention.

Basically each of those games except for maybe Call of Duty will sell less than 100k each worldwide and just wouldn't be worth it to make on the system.

Exclusive Kickstarter Indie games, Nintendo First Party games, Nintendo colaborations with Third Party will be the games people buy on Wii U.

This should actually make people happy when you think about it: more exclusives and less crappy ports that people don't want.

I'd be cool if Nintendo expanded their team that works with 3rd-party companies on exclusive games to be able to do more games.

So far we've seen 3 games (Bayonetta 1, Bayonetta 2, and Fatal Frame 5) this year with Devil's Third so far confirmed for next year. But I think they need to make sure they do at least like 3 of these a year.

Yeah Hyrule Warriors counts I guess to make four, but I can't help but name non-Nintendo IPs.

I said it before, but if the 3 extra exclusives are true. then my money's on Tecmo Koei's Ni-Oh being one of them. I can't imagine the other two aside from Cry On from Mistwalker and Marvelous. Of course the latter is what I REALLY want to see.

All are basically cancelled games or games part of an on-going partnership (Fatal Frame).

Wonder if we could maybe see Fatal Frame 1 or 3 or hell even 4 get remade for Wii U ala Fatal Frame 2 on Wii.

What other Japanese PS360 games that are essentially dead that Nintendo could pursue?

This wasn't canceled. In fact Notion just gave an update on it last month and expect to have it ready for December. The port took longer than expected because the engine (Construct 2) was never brought to Wii U despite being announced for support almost a year ago, so they had to port the game ground up.

Wha? I swore some games used Construct 2 and came out?

A bit reminiscent of the GameCube days...

Although 3DS is still pretty good. Have Theatrhythm, and a bunch of other 3DS games in my backlog to tide me over until MH4U.

Checking again you're right! I'm sure this was the reason Notion gave the delay but now I can't find the article. I'll keep digging.

The Wii U version is being enhanced btw and is retitled Super Ubie Island.

Perhaps Construct 2 was delayed so they had no choice but to rebuild it.

The Wii U is an accessory console at this point. Unless you barely play any games, you're going to need a PS4/XB1/PC on the side because Wii U is not going to sustain you.

Well, it depends on the games the person wants to play. If a person mainly likes Nintendo games, PS4/XB1 become "accesory consoles", as you call it.

I know it might sound totally insane, but there are no univeral "preference" in videogames.

I'd agree, but I have a 3DS, iPad and Shield on the side instead. Wii U still seems to grab most of gametime somehow though.

We really need an arena-style robot game here. Either Little Battlers, Medabots or any others. Or hell, all of them. It's not fair.

The odd thing is though, I've had more fun with those new HD nintendo games than any new game I've played on my PS4. Sure they look better there but I have a PC for graphics , give me something AAA that wows the crap out of me. I'll admit to having fun with some indie games though, especially velocity 2X.

I think we still have a dozen first party titles left in the wii U and about another dozen "second party?" titles. That is, nintendo paying a third party dev to build a game just for them.

There will of course be a handful of indie titles (less then xbox one or PS4 though) and the continued trickle of syrup that is the wii U virtual console release schedule but I do believe the writing is on the wall - we'll get a new system of some kind in 2016 100% for sure.

As for the 3DS, I really don't get what happened there, it started off a bit lacking sure, but its sales picked up for a little while and there were a few games out for it. Nintendo also released a number of good titles , 2013 was a pretty good year for the 3DS really. But look at 2014 , if you aren't into smash brothers there was just about nothing to play for the thing. (outside of shantae and the pirates curse). The fact that nintendo is crapping the NEW 3DS out the door as some sort of a half baked sales push speaks volumes. I mean, it's what 50% faster with 4 times the memory if you build something exclusive ? and the 3D is better ? oh and a tiny analog nub for camera control. Who is this thing for ? It's still less powerful than a vita , has the same pixel resolution as the current 3DS model. It's just an oddball system. I guess they think it'll sell in Japan ?

Fun fact in 2013 nintendo between both platforms published 19 retail games and 4 ehop exclusives so there even lacking in the first party department next year atleast on the 3ds.

I'm pretty sure 3DS will get some cool 3DS game announcements in Japan. Level-5 is a big supporter of the system, I'm sure they will bring couple of big titles. Yokai Watch 3 will be one of themI expect them to create something brand new. Both Namco and Square are testing waters on the system with TotW: reve Unitia and Final Fantasy Explorers, they too bring some other cool stuff when New 3DS sales explode. Same goes with SEGA.

As for NA, there are tons of potential localizations for next year so no problem there:

Final Fantasy Explorers
Senran Kagura 2
Forbidden Magna
Yokai Watch
Devil Survivor 2 Break Record
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold
Legend of Legacy
Bravely Second
Great Ace Attorney
Tales of the World: Reve Unitia
and, dare I say, Dragon Quest 7

Western support? Bad news, there are no "western" but these three: Ubisoft, Activision and 2K. But it's possible, they need to be convinced to make games for the system and New 3DS is the perfect oppurtinty for Nintendo. Just like DS's second coming had titles like GTA: Chinatown Wars, COP: The Recruit and tons of Call of Duty games, Nintendo can do same thing for 3DS too. I expect surprises at E3.

Faced with decline in both their handheld and home console markets, I feel Nintendo has two choices.

1. Chase after third party companies and adopt the modus operandi of Microsoft and Sony. That means opening up studios that create games made to appeal specifically to a western audience. Shooters and open world games with realistic art. They would also need to implement microtransactions, achievements, trophies etc. Nintendo would also have to agree to advertise the games of major third party companies and not let their first party titles overshadow them e.g. don't release a major mario game at the same time as a major third party title. This approach requires them to compete directly with conglomerates like Microsoft and Sony who are much bigger than companies like Nintendo. They have been trying to avoid doing this for a while now. If this plan fails, then it would probably have catastrophic consequences for Nintendo.

2. Explore markets other than gaming. Nintendo was not founded as a video gaming company. If Nintendo's gaming business falters, then Nintendo could always focus on other markets involving entertainment. Simply put if this plan is followed, 10 years from now, Nintendo would not be a gaming company. Instead, Nintendo would be an entertainment company that makes games. I get the sense that this is the road that Nintendo wants to take.

Whichever path Nintendo chooses to take, the Nintendo of the future will be very different from the present Nintendo.

Pretty solid list, but yeah, has a few games that were never actually confirmed or cancelled for Wii U.

- Biker Bash (rumour from 2012 based on some concept art)
- Delver's Drop (port was never confirmed)
- Demon Tribe (another rumour from 2012, never happened)
- Ghost Song (Kickstarter stretch goal failed)
- Gunlord (Indiegogo campaign failed)
- Pinball Arcade (cancelled)
- Saber Rider and the Star Sheriff (cancelled)
- Super Ubie Land (cancelled) (up: still happening)

Probably others, but eh.
Pinball Arcade seems to be coming 2015 now
