NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

This mod completely changes how Metal Gear Solid feels to play. Explore Shadow Moses with an over-the-shoulder camera, free aim using the right stick, crouch walk, and experience the game from a whole new perspective. I've also included my own RE4-style close shoulder camera for those who want an even more immersive view.
  • 00:00–00:49 – The video introduces a fan-made third-person over-the-shoulder camera mod for the original Metal Gear Solid (1998). It adds modern-style gameplay features including free aiming with the right analog stick, crouch walking, and seamless switching between the classic overhead view and the new camera.
  • 00:49–02:37 – The creator highlights a broader community modding effort that aims to make the campaign playable as Gray Fox and other characters, complete with unique animations, sound effects, abilities, and lore-friendly additions. The third-person camera mod is presented as part of this larger long-term project.
  • 02:37–03:58 – A setup guide begins. Players need a PC, a specific version of DuckStation (which should not be updated), Cheat Engine, and the provided mod files. PlayStation controllers require DS4Windows to emulate an Xbox controller, as the mod currently supports XInput.
  • 03:58–06:46 – The video recommends customizing controls for better ergonomics (e.g., remapping shoot to L1) and explains how to load the game, attach Cheat Engine to DuckStation, load the provided .CT trainer, and enable either the original third-person camera or the creator's Resident Evil 4-style over-the-shoulder variant.
  • 06:46–07:37 – Additional Cheat Engine settings are required (hotkey polling intervals and scan settings). Once configured, players can toggle third-person mode and crouch movement using the controller sticks during gameplay.
  • 07:37–08:42 – The mod is still experimental. Camera glitches may occur after enemy attacks, during crawling, vents, or cutscenes, sometimes causing Snake to disappear or the camera to break. The recommended workaround is switching back to the original camera for these sections and saving frequently.
  • 08:42–09:26 – Some gameplay elements remain incompatible with third-person mode. Players should return to the original view when using the Nikita missile, sniper rifle, crawling through vents, or changing floors in elevators. Most other weapons—including the Stinger missile—work well and often benefit from the wider perspective.
  • 09:26–09:52 – The presenter concludes that the mod is already fully playable despite its rough edges, praising the Metal Gear fan community for keeping the series alive through ambitious reverse-engineering and modding efforts, while promising future updates as development continues.

That's pretty cool
