The PR person could also be misleading. They apparently said "Nintendo was responsible for handling the game" which can mean a lot of things including distribution and marketing.

That's where a lot of issues will come in too. Representatives are not always the best source of information. We've seen many reports over the years that a representative said something but only to find out they were wrong because they don't have access to the info some are asking of them.

This isn't shocking at all. Don't know why Nintendo is going so hard with changing games for different countries.

What I question is why only US versions keep changing?? Are they thinking that these changes helps sell more games??

This seems to be in factual disagreement with the very game's own information, where SE and SE's own staff handled all localization direction and Q&A. There's no one listed from Nintendo in any major position:

Anyways, I went and looked up the end credits for Bravely Second and here are the localization people listed:

Then Square Enix, Ltd is listed for more roles including Senior Manager Localisation and Project Management (Yuko Tomizawa) and Senior Localisation Producer (Alex Moresby) and Localisation Producer (Elisa Giribaldi) - and yes, "Localization" suddenly becomes "Localisation" for these roles. Keywords International LTD gets a couple Localization QA roles and finally Nintendo shows up for Executive Producer (Satoru Iwata RIP) and Coordination. Nintendo of Europe gets roles for Coordination and "Localization Quality Specialists" (5 people listed - see my note below before you jump on this please). Nintendo of America gets Coordination and Debug. Nintendo of Korea gets Coordination, Localization Management, Localization, and QA roles.

Annnnd I think that's about it. I didn't really go through the whole credits roll because the ending was playing on the side as well so no idea if I missed anything but I think that should cover most of it.

The only places where Nintendo gets mentioned in Localization is with the "Localization Quality Specialists" and with the Korean localization and I kind of doubt that the "Localization Quality Specialists" played that much of a role with the localization considering that Bravely Default ALSO had 5 "Localization Quality Specialists" listed under NoE (and they were 5 different people).

So I think we can stop blaming Nintendo for this one?

So... I don't see much truth here. Just more confusing information.

I would not believe anything related to this that comes out of Operation Rainfall, given who they associate with.

Where are you getting this from? I seriously doubt that

Maybe it's some kind of ruling about artbooks -specifically-? I don't know, that one boss covered in blood was also removed from the artbook while still being in the actual game.

Assuming Nintendo is handling this, I don't think they'd do that - have they ever straight-up cut out content just to save money on VA/translation?

-Xenoblade X has less voice/battle script options for the player avatar in the localized version than in the original Japanese game.

-Fire Emblem Awakening cut the mute avatar option (which rewrote part of the script of various conversations to make that fit better).

-Both Awakening and Fates removed the tone/script variations for the avatar, keeping only one per gender (there are multiple voices, but they all use the same script).

No, that's just to stave off concerned-parent types from emailing news stations about the pedophile game they accidentally bought for their kids or whatever.

The costume changes make sense to me because of how childish the in-game character art looks, but the artbook changes are just... odd and I really can't understand them outside of legal issues?

The parents should really look at the rating on the box then.
But odd as it may sound Bravely Second doesn't strike me as something kids would get, despite its predecessor's million sales worldwide.

That means extremely little. Remember the Rule of Rose debacle?

British press at the time decided it was a "game for children"... don't expect news agencies to actually do their research about this stuff, for parents to care about ratings, or for adults to be responsible in any way whatsoever.

Game publishers are scared of this kind of stuff happening and they will go to great lengths to avoid it.
