what does Anti-Castro/Pro-Trump Marco Rubio have to say about all this?

This hasn't gotten much traction, not nearly as much as I'd hoped it would.

Who knows where it goes. But I was listening to MSNBC on the drive into the office, and they interviewed the author of this story. One anecdote is that he reached out to the Trump campaign and the Trump Organization while putting together the article, and they did not call him back. Within 15 minutes of Rachel Maddow going to air with the early excerpts, lawyers for Trump had called and started threatening him. He said that they also said they looked through all the Trump business and found no evidence of this. The reporter replied (paraphrasing, from memory) "you're looking at the wrong one! If it would help, I can post the documents and memos online on Newsweek for you and all the world to see." (The illegal transactions happened via Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, which is now controlled by Carl Icahn. The Trump lawyers were looking at other Trump businesses.)

This isn't going to hurt him at all.

His supporters will say "see, he really ISN'T racist after-all"...

Hillary supporters will say "he's a schemer doing what schemers do"...

Bernie supporters will say "looks like he is comfortable working with left-wing economies"...

Actually, it will probably hurt him with Cubans in Florida who don't tend to be big fans of Castro but are a pretty important constituency.

Interested in what my dad thinks of this, from Cuba, live in Florida. He's a strong Trump supporter even when I point out all the bad things he's done, it always goes to how Hilary killed people and is corrupt.

I don't expect this to change his mind sadly... when for anyone else it would be a deal breaker.

I have a feeling this week be swept under the rug like all of the other Trump scandals. And with this train accident no one has time to look into this.

I am really looking forward to Rubios attempts at ducking this

He's already calling out Trump.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Donald Trump will have to “answer some questions” about a Newsweek story reporting that a Trump-owned company allegedly violated the United States' trade embargo with Cuba in the late 1990s.

“This is something they’re going to have to give a response to. I mean, it was a violation of American law, if that’s how it happened,” Rubio said on the ESPN/ABC “Capital Games” podcast.

It's a shame that the US allows this guy to run for president. I have never seen a candidate like this. He would ruin the US economy.

Why isn't he in jail already?

I mean, of all the shit I could have heard, from him cheating taxes to this, how can this man still be free?

Is he bypassing some laws with all this stuff to a point that makes him legit over EVERYTHING he's done wrong so far?

If you are rich laws don't apply to you in this country. I can't believe people haven't realized this yet.

Almost no one went to jail after the housing crash. We live in a fucked up place bro.

This will be hand waived away because Trump supporters literally do not care about anythung shady he did in the past. They basically judge him on a completely clean slate since he began his presidential run.

Hey, it's only allegedly spending $60,000 in violation of Federal law with an enemy nation; it's not like he got caught with $10 of crack on him or anything serious like that.

They actually judge him on a slate that resets after every crazy thing he says or does.

And the Cubans here will lose their shit. He's gonna get shit for this from the older ones..no doubt. Almost feel like driving down to Little Havana to listen to folks go nuts about this lol..

So is this hitting big on the media today? I can't check TV at work

It will. And the media (and us viewers/readers) will treat it like they do all the other scandals, like it's just another Trumpy thing, and they will hold him to no standard. The Republicans will dismiss or ignore it, and the world will gaze at us in mystification, the same way we do at Duterte and Putin.

Oh and it will be compared to Clinton Scandals real and invented, as if they are equitable.

Trump had THREE scandals revealed today. This, the golf course firings of ugly people and another Charity scam. The dude is a literal criminal and he's our candidate. I can't deal with it.

An important excerpt from the Newsweek article:

Though it has long been illegal for corporations to spend money in Cuba without proper authorization, there is no chance that Trump, the company or any of its executives will be prosecuted for wrongdoing. The statute of limitations ran out long ago, and legal analysts say OFAC’s enforcement division is understaffed, so the chances for an investigation were slim even at the time.

And perhaps that was the calculation behind the company’s decision to flout the law: the low risk of getting caught versus the high reward of lining up Cuban allies if the U.S. loosened or dropped the embargo. The only catch: What would happen if Trump’s Cuban-American supporters ever found out?

Guess we'll find out.

I doubt this will hurt him much, even in Florida. Older Cuban Americans are probably already mad that the Obama administration is re-establishing ties with the Cuban government, and that anger is more likely to be pointed at the party responsible (and, by extension, Hillary) than the person who illegally spent some money there 20 years ago.

People need to stop thinking that anyone is trying to get Trump supporters to run away from him.

“This is something they’re going to have to give a response to. I mean, it was a violation of American law, if that’s how it happened,” he said on the ESPN/ABC Capital Games podcast. “I hope the Trump campaign is going to come forward and answer some questions about this, because if what the article says is true — and I’m not saying that it is, we don’t know with a hundred percent certainty — I’d be deeply concerned about it. I would.”

Trump will just say he was unaware. He didn't sign that letter nor is his name on there other than the company name. Plausible deniability

Conway basically admitted this happen while then saying "but Hillary." That is the perfect example of this fucking election. Regardless of all the nothing that are the Hillary scandals, Trump has actual scandals handwaived away with "but look at all the bullshit the right has been saying about Clinton for decades, most of it made up or hyperinflated, clearly she is worse."
