Re-asking question on new page:

Does anyone know how supersampling works in games which also offer supersampling? The climb, for instance, has its own supersampling setting. Will I get 1.5 * 1.5 if I run both oculus tray tool (or debug) or will one override the other?

I dunno but for The Climb, I doubt you'd be getting 90fps with 1.5*

I'm an oculus boy now! I had 150 in best buy giftcards burning a hole in my pocket from that laptop trade in deal, was too good of a deal. (Though I didn't realize it came with an xbox controller too, now I have 2 xbox cointrollers and no xbox lol, should get into some PC couch co op).

I've literally only really played Echo arena so far. The room scale is a bit wonky, but i gotta work on my sensor placement I think (maybe pick up a third sensor eventually, do they ever go on sale?). It's really the only game I've played so far that makes it feel like a significant leap over being a (extremely) less janky google cardboard. Ill admit I was expecting maybe better FOV or more intense 3d effects over what I saw in cardboard, but really the improvements are tracking and the touch controllers, it's all immersion.

Here's my noob question(s): How do you guys deal with the cord in stuff like echo arena? Does anyone do things as extreme as having the cord mount to the ceiling to get out of the way? lol. Or is it just getting good at 'jumping rope' in the heat of battle. I don't mind it. but i imagine the immersion factor would fly through the ceiling if I didn't have to worry about that.

second question: do people always leave their occulus plugged in? Or do you like put it away when it's not in use?

okay wait third question: So I didn't realize the focus on this thing means I still need fucking glasses (is there any benefit to having the focus that way? help with eye strain?) I basically shove my glasses inside the unit and then put the headset on (otherwise it doesnt' wrap around my glasses). Is ther any drawback to this? Am I going to fuck up the system? Oh yeah that reminds me I have to make an eye appointment...

With Asynchronous Spacewarp, you can really crank up the supersampling, because your target framerate drops from 90fps to 45fps, which then gets doubled.

So what is this... each eye gets updated every other frame? Sounds like it'd look horrible. I can't imagine anything looking good under 90fps. (can't wait for some 144 adaptive sync goggles. Ugh.)

How do you activate this? Or is it game specific?
It’s enabled by default, it’s why they were able to lower the minimum specs below the original requirements of a GTX 970 and i5-4590. Note that ASW doesn’t work in Windows 7, and only works with games written with the Oculus SDK running on an Oculus Rift (so any game on the Oculus Home store).

No, each eye gets all the frames, the frames just get doubled. It sort-of interpolates the frames, guessing how current motions and animations will continue based on the last couple frames of motion, to fill in the gaps between 45fps rendering. Think of it as a much smarter system like those TVs that show movies at 120hz. It’s not perfect, but it’s really damn awesome, really smoothing the experience when it would normally be bogged down.

ASW automatically kicks in if the framerate drops below 90 for more than a frame or two, at which point it drops the game’s rendered framerate to 45fps and starts interpolating it to 90 (along with using Asynchronous Timewarp to make sure head motions are always rendered at a solid 90fps).

As much as I've waited for prices to come down, I'm still on the fence. I had gear vr, bought games, felt nauseous easily and I haven't touched it in a year. I want to play new retro arcade and job sim but I can't afford buying vr games on top of games I haven't played yet. Is this something I need or is the next version going to be worth waiting for

Damn I missed the Amazon Prime Day promotion they had where they gave you a $100 which i'm assuming would've let you get this for $299. Although i'm not sure.

I know but I noticed the artefacts instantly and went searching for what it could be.

I actually turned ASW off because it is better that way in Elite Dangerous.

I think we are getting this price drop *instead* of a new version. They haven’t hinted at any future high-end VR headsets yet, and when this one first went on preorder they basically said it’d get updates every couple of years (Rift came out March 2016). So don’t expect a new PC headset until 2018. It sounds like next year they may be releasing mid-range headsets, better than Gear VR but not as good as Rift.

things are moving along fast but holding out for rift 2/vive 2, i'd put my money on you being in for a relatively long wait

You need to try Robo Recall

Great price, looking to jump in.

I apologize, as this likely has been asked, but is there a list of Vive exclusives that are not compatible with the Rift? My understanding is if a game is on Steam, the Rift can play it through a roundabout method, is this correct?

Anyone own any screen protector for it? I saw on Reddit somebody mentioned using a watch screen protector, but since that is out of stock I was looking at ordering one of these.

I don't understand the obsession with screen protectors for electronics. They degrade the optical quality of whatever you put them on. Just take care of it, get a microfiber cloth for cleaning, and don't worry about it!

anyone else feel like the two eye images never fully merge into one? it's kinda like how I can always see my nose, I can always kind of see the black space between the lenses, no matter what lens distance I use.

There aren't any true Vive exclusives. Oculus supports SteamVR/OpenVR so it can play any game the Vive can. The only issue will be if the Touch controllers have the appropriate button mapping comparable to the Vive wands. Of course native Oculus SDK support is preferable, but in the case of OpenVR/SteamVR, developers usually add in appropriate Touch optimizations. For example, Ghost Town Mine Ride & Shooting Gallery - the only difference between Vive and Oculus control mode is that reload in Oculus is changed from having to click in the joystick (would get old fast) to moving the joystick to reload. Developers are usually good about this; however, I wouldn't be surprised if Doom VFR and Fallout 4 VR do not have Touch controls optimizations because of the lawsuit. Those games definitely wont have native Oculus SDK or be on the Oculus store obviously due to the lawsuit.

For a rear Oculus sensor, what can I use to cover up the wire on carpet so no one will trip over it and preferably not look too horrible?

I notice it too, but usually as soon as I'm playing something I stop noticing it at all, it's mostly just on white menu screens.

I've read that glasses scratch the lenses really easily and am nervous about not having anything to cover them up.

I want raw data, which is on sale at steam, but I also want the climb. I think there's a pack with both and 2 other games for 70 bucks on the Oculus store, which is a better deal. I'm just worried that the pack isn't going to be for sale by the time I get my rift (Wednesday or Thursday). Is there a way to know when those pack deals end?

It's not even a roundabout method. Steam recognizes you have an Oculus Rift and it works. I personally had to also go through the Steam Room Setup independently of the Oculus one. I haven't had any issue with using my Rift for Steam stuff yet.

I would imagine they would run it for a while so all of these headsets they just sold can get into hands. Personally, I am in the same boat you are (want Raw Data but also The Climb) and I was struggling with buying stuff through the Oculus store as opposed to Steam for all the normal reasons (I have 1000+ games in my Steam Library) but realistically, my next VR headset is years away and hopefully I won't even want to play anything that's out now because it's been far surpassed. So I guess it's Oculus store for me!

Don't get a screen protector. You're gonna degrade the quality of the visuals. The thing with VR lenses is and how close your eye is to them, even with micro-scratches and hell scratches themselves on the lenses you won't be able to tell at all that they're there.

Adjust your IPD. It sounds like it's not set properly.

At the end of his message he says it doesn't help.

I think certain applications (especially badly recorded VR Porn) has issues with things that are close.

Anything will have issues up close, the focal length is fixed. Your brain and eyes will conflict when you get up close to something in VR due to that.

Well, some applications, in particular, have issues.

I'm just too embarrassed to highlight them.

When you're in the Oculus menu (what I call 'the white screen', which you get to by pressing the menu button on the right Touch controller), there's an icon on the second column towards the bottom that allows you to adjust your lens spacing. It brings up a green cross where you adjust the headset height and the lens spacing to make the lines within the cross clear.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to do this every time you put the headset on. If you're using it, and it's not focused properly, it can really screw with your eyes and sense of balance.

The distance doesn't matter, it's like my eyes are constantly aware of the two circles of vision that the lenses provide. They never completely merge into one cohesive image.

I noticed it while playing Rec Room, but it also manifested itself in SteamVR home and Robo Recall. I'm pretty sure it was a game-wide issue.

Maybe my eyes are just weird, I have trouble seeing distance and I have slight astigmatism in one of my eyes.

It's just weird because I didn't notice it at all while I was playing yesterday. Maybe I was too wrapped up in the initial wow factor of virtual reality to see it.

Well, like you said, it's a bit like seeing your nose. It's always there in your vision, but you only really see it when you look for it.

The two images don't totally overlap edge to edge, so I think what you're really noticing is the other eye's image edge.

Anyone have any thoughts on Raw Data? It's $32 on steam right now. Mostly for the SP experience.

I've liked it a lot single player, and the difficulty is not bad at all once you've leveled up your character. Less interactive than Robo Recall, but more than enough difference to make it worthwhile.

I'd rank some more quirky titles above it, but it's a good "traditional-style" game.

Yeah, it's definitely the image edge.

I guess that's a normal thing for goggles to have, but I dunno.

If you bought it from Best Buy, check your email if you ordered it online, or your receipt if you bought it in-store.

Ah, cool. Found the code. What about the other games? Are they Best Buy deals or does everyone get them? ( Lucky's Tale, Medium, Toybox, Quill, Dead and Buried, Dragon Front and Robo Recall)

Ok. I had the Rift set up in my shared office w/ my wife, but, only really had space for standing and a slight bit of movement.

Moved my PC downstairs to the basement into a framed out yet-to-be-built bedroom and hung the sensors from the ceiling at 8' and 10' across in a diagonal. Got extenders for all the cables. So far, working very well and gives a nice freedom to the experience. My kids are loving it just doing simple things like some of the funhouse games and the Lab.

I played some Echo Arena and Superhot and both were fantastic. Especially the couple games where I just felt constricted not worrying about punching out a window is nice.

The 3rd sensor is coming this week and that should give a nice setup. Bummer is moving my PC out of the cozy office upstairs, but, will live with it for now.

Hmm, it says Eve Valkyrie does support HOTAS, but still requires an XBox 360 controller plugged in. I'm running out of USB ports here...

As soon as you make an Oculus account you'll get some of them, and then once you connect your Touch controllers it'll add the rest to that account. If you do it all during the initial setup (which you will) they will just appear in your library.

Was told that a bundle was ready for pickup last Tuesday at a Best Buy 30 mins from my apartment. They couldn't find the Touch controller (they searched for over an hour and a half as I patiently waited) so they couldn't sell the bundle. They gave me a free soda as compensation (felt like a slap to the face) and shipped the device to my house. Was supposed to arrive on Friday, UPS fucked the order up and now it's supposed to come tomorrow.

This is a brutal wait

Any games that are more triple a experiences? Games that you control a actual moving character? Or something like RE 7 is? I'm loving the headset and the tech but starting to feel like a lot of these games are the samey.

Hm, I completed all of the setup (remote, xbox controller, touch) and all it gave me was Lucky's Tale and the tutorials.
