Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

Ignoring all this fun talk about boobies...

Is anyone else excited about Social Trivia and Herobound: Gladiators? Going to get some VR multiplayer on tonight!

https://www.oculus.com/en-us/blog/join-friends-in-vr-with-new-oculus-social-features/

Social Trivia, created by Oculus, is a new game that lets you and up to four friends compete in a battle of knowledge. Look for it in the Concepts section of the Oculus Store.

Herobound: Gladiators, the multiplayer adventure game, is now available on the Oculus Store. Band together with up to four people to conquer goblins and demons in arena battlefields. Use integrated voice chat to talk and strategize in real time for co-op action.

Anyone in the UK had issues registering their debit card to the Oculus store. Only way it can be done is on the app it seems, and it just rejects mine. 100% correct info and use my card for online purchases all the time so no idea why. Pretty crap if I can't actually buy anything!

Also, am I missing something but I don't seem to have the Oculus cinema app.. I have Oculus Videos but there's no movie trailers or anything in there like I've seen demo'd and I wanted to see what a 3D trailer looked like in decent quality.

So I tried GearVR (my OG one) yesterday with my S7, and also got the games from the left side of that image last page (though I owned half of them already).

Screendoor effect is not present anymore. Just seeing the pixels a little bit, but it's much better than it was on my Note 5. The experience was nice, but the phone still gets a bit warm and I noticed that occasionally the tracking would "skip" a little.

Anyway, looks better overall on the S7.

Oculus has sorted out uninstalled apps to its own section and now lets you review apps with this new update. Such a small thing but so glad its finally made its way in.

So overheating isn't an issue anymore?

Crosspoast from the S7 thread:

So I got the free Gear VR games even though I picked the Gear S2. I just logged out of the Oculus app and back in and they popped up. No code entered, no nothing. I thought only people who got the Gear VR promo would get the free games. I'm on Verizon. The bundle is Keep Talking, Darknet, Star Chart, Drift, Herobound: Spirit Champion and Anshar Wars 2.

No complaints from me!

Also, Herobound Champions is fun, but Social Trivia is fantastic. Currently if you have a controller you can actually fly all over the room and troll people that don't have one. It's pretty hilarious sneaking up behind people, or slowly getting nearer and nearer to them, or just blocking their view of the answers. I'm sure it'll get patched out.

If anyone wants to add me as an oculus friend, it's plagiarize

As you probably would have guessed.

Been playing a bunch and no over heating so far. Very happy.

Not sure what the Note 5's screen resolution is, but the S7 is the same as the S6 so it shouldn't be any different. And the screen door effect is very noticeable on the S6.

No prior experience before the S7 but yeah screen door is there. I think it's slight and hard to discern between screen door and just the fact the pixels are visible but there's is some black. Some apps and things like 3D photos seem to come out a hell of a lot better than others. I watched a few minutes of a Twitch stream last night and then some Vimeo music vids and I was impressed how well they came across even with screen door. They still felt pretty HD and clear, so long as the screen isn't set too far away. If it fills or nearly fills your field of view it looks great but yeah with visible pixels still.

I'm excited to see where this will go even with a bump to a 4K screen at some point. That will definitely make this a viable entertainment hub for enjoying watching videos and playing casual games. It's good but not perfect right now.

Still. I spent at least two hours with it on last night. Got some stutter in Smash Hit and glitchyness here and there, but I'm really enjoying it. Definitely the future!

Edit: Why is there such disparity between some apps. Some have readable text and are pretty smooth looking, while other things like the Samsung Internet browser Beta thing is an aliased jittery mess, and looks frankly awful. Also why are most of the 360 videos so poor in quality. The Assasins Creed one, downloaded, is so low res I feel like I'm missing something, is it meant to be that bad. The streaming only ones are so bad I don't even know why they're allowed on there, all I have is a faintly 3D blob of crap whizzing by my face! :p The ONE exception I've seen so far is that Emoticon Korean animated one. That's great! Why are the rest so bad?

Jesus Christ it has been two weeks since the expiration of their "15 working days" time frame, in which they should've reviewed my form and get back to me with an email (to get this damn gearvr).
I've contacted them several times now, and they keep saying they're behind with them, because they have too many requests, and will eventually get to mine.
Is that realistic or are they just taking the piss? 2 extra weeks just to review the form, not even shipping the thing.

Maybe they really were caught off guard by the amount of people getting an s6 for this, and yet they also need people with an s7 one, now.

Should I just cave in and buy one? Even though I specifically bought the phone because of the promotion?

I've only overheated my S6 once, probably due to downloading and watching VR videos at the same time.

I hear that if you disable the Facebook app from the phone, it will help your overheating issues. If you must use Facebook for anything you could always access it from the browser.

I am getting this VR tomorrow but I am concerned about the overheating issue, what should I do to minimise it from happening? (On a Samsung S6)

Thanks.

I was already convinced of the technology, since I own an Oculus Rift DK2, but I wasn't really convinced of its viability as a mass market item at the prices we've been seeing with Oculus Rift and the Vive. I purchased a Galaxy S7 and got the Gear VR as a pre-order bonus, and I have to say, if VR ever takes off - I think it's going to be due to cell-phone powered devices.

It honestly gives a legitimately sound VR experience, is relatively inexpensive assuming you're already going to be purchasing the phone and it's biggest advantage in comparison to stuff like Oculus/Vive/Orpheus is the fact that it's 100% mobile. Not being bogged down by a computer, console or cables is awesome.

As phones continue to become more and more powerful, their screens continue to increase in resolution and Oculus is able to strike deals with more phone manufacturers - I truly believe it'll be the driving force behind VR's adoption as a mass market item.

I've tried the S6 and S6 Edge (5.7" screen) in GearVR and the S7 is definitely an improvement in color / screen door. All screens, including my previous Note 5 (which was also 5.7"), are 1440 x 2560. I think it has to do with Samsung's new "Diamond Pixel" arrangement: http://www.displaymate.com/Diamond_34.html

Haven't had any overheating yet, though I did feel the pain of being inside of "Dead Secret" and spinning around quickly and hitting my foot on a table leg :p

Speaking of Dead Secret, never experienced
the horror film moment where a character (me in this case) sees something in the mirror and turns only to see no one there)
until this game. Pretty fantastic!

Ok, I don't know if it was asked before, but I can't possibly go through all the pages:

- How is porn on that thing?

Having finally tried it myself tonight, via a couple of demo/sample clips, I enjoyed it. Obviously non VR still gets the job done, but the VR version was very unique and much more personal obviously. Of course nothing beats real life.

I'm bummed. My wife just bought a Gear VR for me a couple weeks ago so I guess no free games for me. Those sound awesome.

Well if you got an S7, I think just logging out and back in in the Oculus app might net you the 6 free games. But Social Trivia and Herobound: Gladiators are both free to anyone. Gladiators needs a pad though mind.

Don't worry too much about it, it won't damage the phone it just makes you stop using VR for a while. That said, leave the cover off and don't download stuff to the phone while spending time in VR. This is kinda tricky because a lot of the apps won't let you download the full app or movie-like content until you are in VR. What I do is end my session by starting the downloads for stuff I want to check out next time. But again, it's not going to hurt the phone if you don't do that.

S6 edge+ which I just got a couple months ago. I really need to just lay down the $10 for Anshar Wars 2 at this point.

Do it. It's a really fun game. Too bad it was just on sale a few weeks ago. Still worth it at full price.

Has anyone else been watching any of the Big East tournament on NextVR? Basketball works reallly well in VR. The Daytona 500 a few weeks a go was pretty weak though since they didn't have a lot of camera views and there's go just too much space to cover in the sport. Don't really care for racing though anyway. Sports in smaller spaces seem to be work much better like the boxing match they had a few months ago. I think showing people what live sports is like through VR is a big selling point for the format.

In the real world I'm a boobs guy, but in porn I'm more of an ass guy, it needs to be more explicit to elicit a similar response. In VR I'm back to being a boobs guy. Something about the 3Dness returns the perceptual qualia of the boobs.

But when that donk does get up in your face, I give you five minutes tops.

I find it attenuates somewhat over time, but there's still no comparison. My kids will be the last generation before the human race goes extinct.

edit: well, then, top of the page.

I'm gonna get one of these. So... is recorded porn stereoscopic? Cuz it was my understanding that 360 videos were still 2D (I've been outta the loop on this for a while). Also, is it relatively easy to find and download adult apps? I'm assuming I won't find any of these from any kind of official outlet.

Most is 3D. It's kind of the wild west right now in the sense that all kinds of different methods are available. Some are 180° 3D, some are 360° 3D, some are 360° 2D, some are even just a 3d video with no headtracking at all (pretty lame). Quality can vary wildly from source to source. 2D stuff has more clarity, but 3D has the depth perception.

Interesting.

Also, I would like to announce that I am now accepting PMs from any members who think they have a good VR porn recommendation.

I've been playing Trivia a bunch. It's awesome fun. I'm sure they'll patch out the ability to fly your avatar around the room, but I hope they don't.

I broke a guy in Finland's couch.

No really.

I like to wait until people look around the room, and when they look away from me, I quickly move right next to them, so when they turn back... BAM there I am. I've made people jump a few times doing this already...

But this poor guy. He yelps. We hear a crack. Next thing his avatar is facing the ceiling and he's yelling about his couch.

I laughed so much my stomach hurt. People really under estimate what social experiences are going to be like in VR.

That's amazing. I need to get in on this couch breaking action.

To add to what was said, since keeping the cover off and avoiding background downloading I've only had heat issues once. Keep your apps updated through the 2D oculus app that installs when you get the headset. If you live somewhere hot or something that'll be a problem but it's been pretty good for me so far. Streaming videos didn't cause heat problems, although I've been pretty disappointed in the quality of streaming vs downloaded.

Thanks for your advice. I kept the cover off and the phone has ran well tbh.

It drives me nuts that the Oculus video app only let's you stream (not download) the free content. The shapely artifacts are bad enough, but the stuttering during camera-movement is nauseating. Why wouldn't they allow downloads?

The new.one that showed up for me yesterday, Sonar, appears to be a pretty cool short film, if only it wasn't like looking at blocky vaseline. I have no idea why that is allowed on the store, it's literally the equivalent of watching something at like 100p resolution, lol. No download option and even for some of the downloadable 360 vids the quality is still just way worse than should be acceptable.

Got the SteelSeries XL controller in yesterday, tried it with some FPS games to try the sticks, and some retro games for the dpad. Pretty happy with it, feels way better than any other Android Bluetooth controller I've tried.

I just bought one of these for my Note 5, should be getting it tomorrow from Amazon Prime. This'll be my first time using VR ever, so I'm looking forward to it. Well, unless the Virtual Boy counts.

Remy Lacroix. In VR. It's kinda amazing.

I got ya.

Same here lol

I, too, am interested in said content. For..... research purposes......

Yes....I have the same research I need to conduct.

Where is this holy grail??!! lol

Yes, research. This is the kind of research that requires deep consideration. Sign me up.
