Should Microsoft end gamepass?

Gamepass was a solution to a problem that doesn't exist and only sounds good to out-of-touch greedy CEOs. "We'll make gaming Netflix, genius!". Yeah, except that gaming is a completely different medium where this sort of thing is much less desirable. Anyone who wants many cheap games at once can just wait for the next big sale on their platform, humble bundle, get free Epic Games, etc. No need to sub to a temporary service full of 7/10 shit. If you're deep into CoD or whatever, you're probably fine just paying 70 bucks for CoD each year and probably not even interested getting anything else, so GP is also uninteresting to you.

Getting pissed over the thought of actually buying and owning your games lol.
Maybe he needs the money for his cat, who knows.

From his frame of mind, what he is saying makes sense. Sure it doesn't benefit you as a consumer if you have to buy games instead of play them for free. His anger with anyone who can't get that though, lacks depth. It doesn't benefit you as a consumer if all the studios that make games get shut down, and the games that are on the service become watered down Netflix grade games...

But if your cat needs the money, yeah maybe you are willing to ignore all that. A man has priorities.

I'd prefer they keep Gamepass, because it's the only service from them I even like, much less use.

If they got rid of it, I likely wouldn't even boot into the Xbox app at all. They'd get less money from me because I'd just wait for the few first-party games they make I have interest in to get marked down on Steam/GoG, and then every other third-party on Gamepass I'd be giving only that money to Steam/GoG.

Removing Gamepass isn't suddenly going to spike that many more sales on their first-party games, because their quality is still scattershot. They probably should keep porting to Playstation, unless they're going to improve their ecosystem enough for people to want to shop there willingly over others.

Im surprised that MS exec wasted years to realize something some forum users were able to see in a matter of minutes... GP does not work, because it is NOT sustainable!
Unless this was the goal the whole time.

Own all the best video game IP so nobody else can make them, let the studios fail due to Gamepass, close them, and only make sequels when they feel like putting together a team.

Definitely yes, they've had many years to prove it's not sustainable no matter what metrics they're trying to use. Game budgets are too high, you need to pay for third-party day1 games as well and there's just not enough subs to pay for all of that.

Just cut the cord, don't make small steps like removing more IP's from day1 offerings. That'll lead to the same outcome with people leaving, it's just going to be a slower process.

Im cool with it... pay for it but never use it i dont care either way
Yeah I probably should have just bought FH6 but it's nice to have access to some other games, especially for my kids who will only play some game they saw on yourtube once or twice before moving on. I don't need to own Gangbeasts or I Am Fish.

Gamepass conditions players not to buy games, it was a dumb move since day 1.
I haven't bought an Xbox game in years (other than Forza Horizon 6, since I don't do Game Pass anymore). Neither have any of my friends.

I buy tons of stuff on Steam, PlayStation, and Switch.

If Asha wanted to end Game Pass she could have just… ended it. Or leave it at $30 and watch the user base drain away if she wanted to do it in a softer way. But instead she dropped the price and seemed relieved when subs started to pick back up again. Doesn't sound to me like something they desperately want to get rid of.

Right - you weren't conditioned to not buy games by gamepass, because you don't use gamepass. You were conditioned to not buy games you don't want to play, by it being fucking obvious.

Well, I would've played Forza Horizon 6 on Game Pass, like I've played all other MS games, but I stopped subbing when they increased prices.

It made me realize that buying games makes me invested in them and I play them more.

I did buy 3rd party games that I liked on Game Pass all the time to support them. Plus I prefer playing on Steam.

Xbox customers have been too conditioned by it. Suddenly ending it, then what? They just gonna start buying Xbox games in the millions again?

Can't see their habits changing. Treating game pass like it's the new testament was a mistake.
