Sonic Lost World |OT| Too X-treme for the Galaxy

You grab enough rings so that if you get hit, you've got more chances to recover. You get one ring and that one fades after getting hit? You're toast.

Personally, i'm having more fun figuring out the best way to zip through the first two Desert Ruin acts. The high speed stuff isnt really trial and error...for me any, since you can see entrances and enemies miles away now.

I kind of feel like Windy Hill Act Tutorial/1 are the most polished based on what I've played so far. I dunno, I guess that explains the asset reuse.

Oh, the 3DS version has a Tutorial Act. I guess the Wii U version doesn't?

Why can't they just call them Zones and Acts anymore.

Hmm guess i'm just new to buying the physical soundtracks. No wonder its still such a niche purchase area.

EDIT: Agree with the rankings being relegated to time attack mode. Makes you feel less compelled to rush during normal play.
Well, Sega does put some of the soundtracks up on iTunes (Generations, for example), so you can probably wait until then.

They actually call them Zones in the Wii U version, i'm just adding the acts before numbers by reflex.

I kinda want to own some physical soundtracks though. I'll probably suck it up and get a good one every so often.

Yay or Nay for someone that hasnt played a Sonic game in ages. I think the last Sonic game I played was the WIi one. The Secret Rings one.

Well its nothing like Secret Rings, but i'd say give it a rent at least if you've got the ability to.

I will say that I have NO idea how IGN thinks Sonic 4 is better than this, or that Lost World has a lack of speed.

...who concocted these special stages and why. Like, okay. Dimps doesn't generally seem to suck at special stages outside of the odd occasional one. If there's one good thing I could say about Dimps, it's that. Because otherwise I don't like Dimps.

But you have something that looks like Blue Sphere and seems kind of neat, but then adding gyro controls that seem to require me to spin around to get things done is absurd. Especially for someone who gets motion sickness like myself.

The 3DS cutscenes are in really low quality. Blurry.

The main overworld is the same as the Wii U one, with the hexes. I haven't tried Tails's workshop yet, so I'll do that momentarily.

Ah, I see. I won't be playing the Wii U version until either tomorrow or Thursday, so I'll see how that holds up.

Checking back on some of my soundtrack orders from Play-Asia and CD Japan, on average I pay between 30-40 dollars for a standard edition soundtrack. The 20th Anniversary soundtrack for Sonic CD was about $28 for me, the Sonic 1&2 soundtrack was about $36, and Sonic Generations was about $42.

So how does the nights pre order bonus work? Is it inside every copy of the game?

Its a DLC code inside of the boxes marked "Deadly Six Edition". It places a Nightmare Zone icon on the world map.

Its a nice nod to the original Nights, and the soundtrack for the zone is perfect...but its more or less just a fanservice showpiece. Its nice to have, but like the Casino Night Zone dlc for Generations, its really not all that.

EDIT: Really? 28 bucks for something as cool as Sonic CD 20th anniv. sounds like the sweet spot for me.

I didn't preorder, does that mean I can simply look for boxes marked deadly six?
Yes.

Well, it was one of those line of re-releases of certain soundtracks for Sonic's 20th anniversary two years ago. So I imagine the Sonic Adventure / SA2 / Heroes, etc re-releases (but they weren't the entire soundtracks--mostly popular tunes from the soundtracks) were the same price. Sonic CD was a special exception since it got a re-release in 2011.

How do we upload direct captures to websites again? Just open the browser, go to an upload site, and thats it? I usually use Minus, so I guess that would be better if possible than miiverse shots.

Hoping to play a bit of this today...after downloading the Deadly Six pack that's 105MB &then the Omochao RC pre-order bonus that's 50-ishKB......then the day one update.....

There one area of Tropical Coast act 1 that chokes the frame rate REALLY bad for some reason. Otherwise, everything's been really good so far (in terms of framerate)

The Circus Atari bonus levels are really dumb and it's hard to see Sonic when he releases some animals.

The special stages in the 3DS version are garbage. I have to move around in a circle or turn on a swivel chair in order to complete one of them.

Did anyone QA that?

"HEY, ya know what would be funny? If we made it so some Wisps can be controlled via buttons & stick, BUT NOT OTHERS! Just imagine the player having to use the terrible motion controls for that Epsilon asteroid wisp!!"

Holy crap, I HATE this wisp, especially when trying to enter areas for a Red Ring. uuugggghhhh

Finally redeemed and played the Nightmare stage this morning. There's practically nothing to it in terms of gameplay since it's just simplified, reskinned versions of bosses from the main game, but man if the music and everything didn't have me grinning like a git.

I've played two zones so far. I know it seems like most of the poor designs come out later in the game, which I'll be aware of as I go on.

But so far, the game seems to click for me. For those asking for tutorials, I wonder, are you pressing the question mark icons as they appear on the WiiU pad? I haven't had any issues yet, not knowing what to do or how to do it. Not sure if it actually told how to 'run' though, but I knew how to do that anyway. I wonder though for people who don't know anything about the game going in.

I know it's personal preference, but I prefer this game's focus on platforming more than Generations' focus on Speed. I own Generations and I've played a number of levels but wasn't that into it. I also rented Colors at one point, and was equally unimpressed with that game.

I suppose it boils down to taste. I'll have fuller impressions as i play through the game, but so far so good. The game actually feels pretty easy to navigate as long as you are a little bit more careful than you are used to with the faster Sonic games in the past.

So far it feels like the same kind of game that NiGHTS was: a game that was fun and had flashes of brillance, but was ultimately rushed and lacked cohesion/ was a little flawed. I'm going to continue playing now though.

EDIT: There are certain designs to this game that I appreciate, that I think come after a little while of play. For example, homing in on enemies feels strange at first, until you realize you just wait until the icon appears, and then if there are a row of enemies you just hold the button and Sonic will pounce through all of them. Feels intuitive.

Important sanity saving tip in case you didn't know, you can briefly maintain the asteroids jump altitude by holding the jump button again at the desired point in the air, I will repeat this as often as needed in this thread to try and save the grief of many.
Regardless the Wisp still sucks and handles horribly, this little ability just makes grabbing a red ring in 1-4 actually possible.

Finished it last night. The best level was the first level. In the end it's a poor's man Mario game, like most Sonic games always have been IMHO. Sonic gameplay rules have always been fundamentally broken:

- Rings are useless. Only one is needed. Catching more is unnecessary, so exploring is often a waste of time.
- The speed concept is flawed. You barely control anything at such speeds, you can't anticipate much, resulting in a lot of trial and error. Moreover, if you're aiming to get 5 red coins per level, if you choose the wrong path, you can't go back, you have to restart the level. That's bad design. Plus, what's the reward for this? I could already access the "hidden" levels after beating the final boss (
Ripped from NSMBWii again
).

The bosses were laughably easy, I actually beat some of them by accident lol.
The life system is broken although a ? level in Sky Road allows you to rack-up lives (What's up with that level?). The saving animals system is also broken, why save animals in the levels when you can free 5 times more in the Circus stages?

The music was very nice in a few levels and the title screen though.
I won't even mention the attempt at a story, at least the cutscenes weren't long and are skippable. The game is also short overrall, 7 hours-ish , with only 7 X 4 levels, again nothing compared to Mario games.

Sonic Team has been making Sonic games for what? 22 years? and they still look like beginners meanwhile Nintendo teams have perfected their craft.

Sonic Generations kicks the holy shiitake mushrooms out of Mario Galaxy.

3 Levels in and....this is underwhelming as fuck lol.

I am a huuge sonic fan. and I normally can put up with the series known brand of mediocrity but this somehow just feels meh.

It's not bad and its early but still. It also a bit slow so far. I know gotta go fast isn't what Sonic is really about but still.

Also the game feels unfinished. Not in the normal Sonic Team manner but just from a polish standpoint...like the first boss fight just kinda happened and went. And I know lol Story in a Sonic game but it seriously feels like we are missing a part of the story from jump.

So yeah it just feels fractured and unfinished. It's okay but right now Colors and Generations runs laps around this game...maybe even the day levels in Unleashed too.

Its early but I'm not getting that feel that the previous two games gave me. Its just meh. Kinda boring.

It's early tho so I'll hold off final judgement.

I will say it is quite a bit harder or rather I have been dying a lot which is good and better than just holding forward and press a to win the series has occasionally fell into,.

Interesting how diverse the opinions are of this game. You really have to try it for yourself. I just completed the 'tube' level of Windy Hill, and I have to say, I've been having a blast so far. I quite enjoyed that level. Also, still haven't died yet. The game feels easier so far than what the reviewers made it out to be.

let's all just agree that both franchises are awesome and there's no need to compare the two in this day and age!

So I just finished the game and I got to say that the story is terrible as it doesn't come to a complete ending.

Also I was doing 2 player co-op with my little brother and holy cow did it bring the difficulty level down, it's clear the game is design for both mode but not done very well.

Also the wisp are useless and the new wisp aren't fun to use as their control just don't work at all.

You knew the comparisons were going to happen qq, even though Sonic and Mario have their own things to bring to the table, and I don't think the state of matters right now with respect to both series in recent years disparages one series over the other because both have their merits. :V

The boss fights in the 3DS version are pretty simple so far.

I keep almost selecting to go into a special stage and I don't wanna go.

I don't know guys. I'm kind of getting a rush from the risk/reward of playing it safe and taking moments where you go really fast and fly off the handle. Having the multi-homing attack really helps the game flow in terms of controls.

I did run into a weird spot where the camera did a reverse pan because it expected me to run through this speed booster even though I missed it.

On level 5 or so, the Parkour system really shows itself. Basically no more dying because you barely missed a ledge. Also, with the multiple jumps allowed, it also gives lots of flexibility. I finally died a few times when a sheep pushed me off the ledge and one time I overshot a jump, but mostly it was my fault.

So far the game is a blast to play. It also feels really vibrant, and the general vibe is just that it's fun. (imo)
Also the visuals are a nice step up from Generations. I think I feel that way mainly because the game looks very sharp and runs very, very smoothly.

Master that spin dash and you'll have a good amount of speed. Imo this is about as fast as 3d Sonic should be. Kinda the same as Sonic adventure 1 / 2 but with a proper spindash and manual wallrunnung + mantling.

The gameplay mechanics themselves are fantastic and there's some good level design in there too. There's lots of cool ideas here and lots of fun to be had. The game is just dragged down by some poor design decisions like the wisps, live system and iffy level design late on. When the game is good it's good, and there's a LOT of potential here. Your enjoyment of this is just going to be about how high your tolerance level of the flaws is going to be.

I agree. if you learn how to use the spin dash/homing dash properly, plus learn how to rely on the parkour, then those designs become strengths. I can't wait to try all the levels again after I've gone through the game a bit so I can practice the wall running more.

That makes sense. All of my favorite Sega games are this way. NiGHTS was the same way. It has moments of brilliance, but it also has some really poorly designed mechanics whenever the game shifts away from just flying.

I feel like if this game keeps up in that sense, then to me it will be a great game. I played the shit out of NiGHTS on the Saturn.

I feel like Sega fans should be aware of this by now, though.
