Agreed. The wonderful use of silence in that scene evokes so much tension. It even strengthens the impact of the actual sound when it does occur.

Indeed. It ads a sense a realism which amplifies the severity of the scenario. The sounds of running/taking cover while the mechanical sounds of the tank rearranges it's target. The 50(?) Cal machine fire destroying her cover. All the while a subdued ambient sounds takes 2nd place to the rain which imo perfectly encapsulates the sense of isolation.
