Take a deep dive into the gameplay of Tyr, the upcoming free-to-play 8v8 multiplayer tank shooter for PC that prioritizes strategy over split-second reflexes, emphasized by its lineup of unique, specialized armored vehicles.

Take a look at the Release Window Trailer for Tyr, a multiplayer tank shooter developed by Stoke Games. Players will take to the open fields to strategically dispatch enemy tanks. Get the jump on adversaries using clever sightlines, make use of unique abilities, and acquire upgrades to turn the tides of battle. Tyr is launching in Summer 2026 for PC (Steam), with a playtest available now.

Futuristic World of Tanks?

Actually, does this even take place in the 'future' or an alien world? I just see a bunch of fields.

I watched these trailers thinking the tanks would transform any minute (because they look like Transformers vehicles).

I'll keep an eye out to see if they add any PvE down the line.

They do have one that turns into a jet. I think it only lets you fly for 10 - 20 seconds as a reposition tool.

So as an old closed Beta world of tanks player iv been playing the open test on steam this time around.

It feels very close mechanically to world of tanks, the spotting, HP, moduals and tank class system (light medium heavt) all feel very world of tanks, with both Tank Destroyers and SPG's thankfully removed.

What sets this apart is the systems around that, there is no tech trees where you start as a basic tier 1 and work your way up to more advanced tanks at tier 11 and hoping your matched against people in lower tiers that you can dominate, no all vehicles are on the same Tier... TYR? Meaning all tanks preform against vehicles that can be just as effective against you if played well.

This I have found massively changes the gameplay dynamic, there is still some small progression where in a handfull of games you quickly level a tank and unlock skill points which you can slot in and out to push the tank more towards an aggressive or support style play. The slower grind is for other tanks which unlock at a reasonable rate and are all side grades. But at its core, its a very fun experience where im not going up against anything that I can do nothing about like in WoT.

Theres also the "hero shooter" abilities each vehicle has. So far this I have found has not detracted from the experience because currently all vehicles feel massively different when not even using its ability, but they do sort of nudge you into playing a specific way, like your not going to play a Maul as a backline sniper, not because you cant but because you would be wasting its ramboost ability if you did. Its subtle but it means a lot of vehicles are pushed to playing aggressively, and some are given counters against vehicles that play defensively as snipers. You dont find the stalemates you get in WoT wheres theres only a bunch of TD's and SPG's sitting at base waiting for the other side to rush them, that never happens.

Overall im surprised, many free 2 play games I try and just roll my eyes at, but this one, this one has actual promise, if they dont fuck up the monotisation, I can see this being my go too game for years.
