“A campaign has been launched calling for a ban on the development of robots that can be used for sex.

Such a use of the technology is unnecessary and undesirable, said campaign leader Dr Kathleen Richardson.

Sex dolls already on the market are becoming more sophisticated and some are now hoping to build artificial intelligence into their products.
Those working in the field say that there is a need for such robots.

Replace? No. Serve as a viable alternative to people who seek companionship? Yes, and we are absolutely heading in that direction. Not only are we heading in that direction, once the technology becomes really good, there is going to be a metric shit ton of people, especially men, who are going to be drawn to this. In a world where people are having less babies due to fertility problems, poor social skills (thank you social media), financial woes, and the growth of LGBTQ+, the rise of AI companions will make the problem even worse.

Imagine being a young man in your 20s. You have 0 game when it comes to women, dating websites aren't working out for you, and you've been rejected multiple times. You're lonely, depressed and angry. There's a lot of young men out there who are like this. Now imagine that suddenly a new program comes out that's an AI Girlfriend. Her voice and personality is tailored to suit your needs. Hell there may even be mods that allow you to turn her into your anime or video game waifu. And not only does she look and sound like your dream girl, her behavior over time adapts to suit your needs. She knows what to say and when to say it, and fulfills that longing sense of companionship.

How many men will be drawn to something like that? How many men will just use a program like this to experiment, or simply as a temporary solution until they find a real girlfriend? How many men will grow more reliant or complacent with the program? What happens when companies start to figure out ways to fulfill the need for physical contact? First it starts with blue tooth synchronization with some kind of sex toy. Then eventually augmented reality comes in. Then maybe one day, you're able to come up with the money to have them mail her to your front door. An actual sex robot.

I'm mentally preparing myself to one day walk into my son's room many years from now, and see him talking to some blue haired anime girl on his PC. It will be a dark day indeed.

In western society probably as most western women have become quite trash lately. East tho? Just go to Russia, Philippines or whatever and enjoy sex as much as you want. You can easily have a family as well if u want. Men are the issue in the east.

People want sentient things. They may think they don't want it, and there are men that totally just want a "yes woman", and for those, non-sentient bots will be enough.

But AI or Real, it only has value if it's sentient.
And the thing about being sentient, is that those feelings that the AI may feel, can very much be similar or identical to what a real woman feels.

They may not like you just the same, for your appearance, your height, personality, whatever it is.

So my point is that, it won't be enough. You may be satisfied with a non-sentient AI for a while, because women have become less approachable in recent years (It's not up to debate, it's a fact documented by data). But at some point you will feel unfulfilled.

I know I will. Even if it's a Sexbot.
She can look like my favorite Pornstar, and artificially show pleasure when we are having sex, but... "Artificially".
I want real feelings. I want her to genuinely enjoy it. And I want to believe that this what most people want as well.

But wanting something that is sentient, will come with its complications as well.

So it is a complex issue.

My serious answer is that actual sex robots will be so expensive that almost no one would be able to own one. It would be more than a car. What you would likely see is robot brothels pop up all around.

Getting a real life partner is about more than just sex. You combine incomes, chores, can make more long term goals, children. Robots won't be replacing any of that, but it will certainly be an interesting thing to witness.

As for AI chat bots, that's definitely coming and probably extremely soon. Really no different than porn, except it probably talks to you more and might actually be slightly healthier for people.

On an emotional level "AI" will guaranteed replace women (and men, for that matter) and I think that will happen in only a few years.

On the physical front a lot of innovation is still required and the costs are overwhelmingly in the consumer's disadvantage so that won't happen anytime soon. But eventually it will happen.

I would say banning social media will probably do a lot more for real relationships than sex robots. Of course people with no game will be drawn to them - is it that bad? I would much better have an incel release their sexual frustration with a sex robot than he deciding to mutilate and murder real women.

It is inevitable that there will be some sort of sex robots in the future. If humanity can invent something to fuck, it will invent it. Very much like humanity is sure to further optimize and invent stuff for killing people. Killing and fucking is what humanity is all about in its essence.

That being said, I like my technology to be dumb, so I guess I have to just continue to interact with real women.

AI “companions” are more likely to change society in meaningful ways. Especially as we are already seeing more engagement with parasocial relationships.

What a lot of men on only fans want is a relationship with the girl, to have them want him physically AND emotionally. Which is why so many girls have their boyfriend or random people they hire chat and send messages.

Imagine an OnlyFans girl offering an AI companion of herself.

Or just a social media star / actress / whatever.

Sexbots I don't think so. At least for a long time until/if they can make them really realistic like in sci fi movies. And even then they'd probably be really expensive so at most the average person will just be able to rent them...at which point they are basically just replacing hookers

But I definitely think AI companions might me doable in the near future and I do think they'll have an impact on society. Lots of lonely people out there who would probably get attached to a virtual companion that's always available, always happy to talk to you, always interested in what you have to say and basically tailored to your tastes and interests.

But i dont think you need to go that far to replace woman especially in the companion sense. AI can keep you company and play games with you now.
In this "I give up era" I think a lot of folks will be just happy with just a nice little banter after a days work.
