XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC announced

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Today, we're introducing XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC, making it easier to play classic XBOX games from the past across PC and handhelds, including the ROG XBOX Ally and XBOX Ally X.

- 30 fps locked;
- can increase the resolution by 2x, 3x or 4x, for a maximum of 2560x1920 (4:3 ratio);
- can enable v-sync, increase MSAA to 2x or 4x, enable anisotropic filtering (AF) and choose a trade-off between sound latency and sound clarity;
- sub-par frame-pacing on the 30fps titles, with deviations from the regular 33.3ms or 16.7ms update rate that can produce jerky camera motion.
- There's also a bug where display scaling results in lower-than-intended rendering resolutions - so the "2560x1920" setting produces only 1440x1080 if Windows is set to 150 percent scaling. Setting Windows to 100 percent scaling fixes the issue - something we didn't know during testing, meaning our video captures require updating before we can post video content. Beyond this, AF is limited to a single setting and looks worse than on Series X, and there are a handful of visual bugs, including wireframes visible in Fuzion Frenzy, shadow artefacts in Blinx and motion judder in Conker.

Also they're getting achievements

We plan to add even more features to XBOX Backward Compatibility games in the future. I'm excited to share that later this year we will be bringing one of the top fan-requested features to select original XBOX games on both console and PC: Achievements. The first four games releasing in preview today will be updated to include Achievements in the coming months.

Might have to buy Conker for $10 to test this out.

These are already BC on Xbox consoles. For all intents and purposes, BC work on consoles is done with so now it's time to work on PC getting BC; that or fire the entire BC team. Would you prefer that?

That's his point. That's it's "NOT" all about the console.

A good step in the right direction. I thought they killed off the BC team?

Will the games require GamePass for online or will it be "free" if you own the license?

Microsoft better put all the Gears games on this asap, 'cause decomps are already here.
Yes 360 games are the obvious next step. Followed by all Xbox One / Series games being playable on PC. We kind of suspected this was on their roadmap when they announced that Helix would play PC games (although it's hard to say if that idea has survived).

I did also wonder if the decomps and recent xemu/xenia emulation scene advancing rapidly had maybe brought this about quicker than even Microsoft expected, considering it's only soft launching with four titles.

Things like this actually make it more likely I'll buy the next Xbox. The whole pc / console cross save buy once eco system is a very big draw for me.

I'm sure it's free if you already have the license and if you don't you will just have to purchase.

This is great. I just upgraded my video card and I'm dual booting Steam OS and Windows 11. If they get all the BC stuff over to Windows, I won't need my Series X. Hell yeah!

The only digital original xbox games I have are the few they gave away during the Gold years.
I'll still need to keep my Series X around to play all those digital XB360 games.
Which by the way can fit on the Series X if you have at least a 1TB expansion card thing.

This is awesome but which games are playable? I would love to be able to play the Gears trilogy at 4k with high graphics without graphical issues

I already own Conker and Fusion Frenzy, so I guess I'll try those out later.

These games will never see the light on steam these will probably be exclusive to the Xbox store to get more people on the platform.

Who knows. They are putting their games on ps5 which couldn't be more of a direct competitor. They want to actually sell games.

They're only launching this feature with 4 OG Xbox games. No news yet on whether 360 games will come to PC but I would assume so eventually.
  • BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
  • Conker: Live and Reloaded
  • Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy®
