Xbox has gone too far

I have used Xbox on and off over the years. Like the og, loved 360 and had a Series X at launch (Sold it after some years because it was just a bad PC more or less)

Anyway I never really disliked Xbox - just felt they lost their way with both hardware and software and most was was kind of meh. They still owned some great studios, chief among them the legendary id software so I kept playing some of games technically owned by Xbox - so I played their stuff sometimes

Now - with them killind id software and even worse, trying to hide it by cutting 75% and pretending the studio is in workable state...

I am frankly pissed now. The Xbox brand has now become someting I activly dislike and wont support. They are a real danger to gaming imo

I bet their "big plan" ultimately is to turn Minecraft Bedrock into Roblox by allowing more ingame purchases. Everyhing else can burn

Some of you all are so soft.

On a serious note I think there is some truth to what you're saying regarding Mojang and King. Asha is directly running those studios now and couldn't care less about the others.

Damn, I though the thread title is another "are we live" weekday thread.

They went too far six years ago, Xbots just ignored it and pretended all was well.

But yeah, Microsoft is a lost cause. Sony is almost there. All hail the PC future.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft reduced their console business to ash. From there they will keep the following franchises multiplatform.
  • Call of Duty
  • Overwatch
  • World of Warcraft
  • Minecraft
  • Diablo
  • Halo (Activision Developed if the remake does well)
  • Candy Crush (King)
  • The Elder Scrolls (MMO + Singleplayer)
  • Fallout (MMO + Singleplayer)
  • Forza Horizon
  • Starfield (Maybe, if they can make it an MMO)
Microsoft is awful and I'm done with them from a consumer level.

Steam / Linux is the way to go for gaming.

I sadly agree with this take except for the ESO MMO. They also cut a ton of that team too and cancelled their new MMO.

They are on borrowed time.

Dumping the four studios earlier makes logic sense but firing all but the executives at id is ugly as fuck. Yeah I think Xbox crossed the line with id software.

This could be a watershed moment tbf to OP. They might start bleeding players and their console sales might see a downturn on the back of this

If id can't turn around and make a goddamned quick and dirty Quake game with 120 people when something like Turbo Overkill exists and was made by essentially one dude, wtf are they even doing? These are retro shooters, not sprawling open world rpgs.

I can tell you for the last, what... 10-15 years they've been dumping untold resources into idTech, and only using it for a couple of games and then making another engine. That was mandated by Zenimax, and should've been course-corrected by Microsoft years ago.

Question. If MS removes XBOX games from Steam, including all of the above, do you go to the MS/XB store? With all of the talk about exclusivity, I am wondering if this is the next news to drop before Helix. I am just trying to get a feel where people are going to land on that.

Someone needs to explain this one to me. I thought ESO was fairly successful.
It is successful (~15 million earned a month, 2+ billion lifetime), but they keep getting the shit end of...well, everything.

I can't make sense of it myself because we need someone to publicly state why that is, but they keep not doing so at Xbox.

Even people here are trying to rationalize and use cope reasoning/logic for why it's okay for iD to be gutted even though that doesn't make much sense either.

My guess would be there are metrics for success that leaves certain teams/projects in a "profitable, but not profitable enough" camp in conjunction with growth measurements. And as they aren't likely to get rid of the TES license, selling that chunk of the studio off doesn't make sense either.

The rationalization of iD is probably standardizing on fewer game engines. In a more just world, they'd have been allowed to buy their independence, but no chance of Microsoft giving up the IPs.

They don't have many other games that are pulling in these numbers on a monthly basis aside from most of the games that ResilientBanana ResilientBanana listed.

It seems very odd to me that the ESO devs are being grouped up with, and treated like, the studios who are doing worse-off than them in terms of sales figures.

It's why in their specific case I'd rather take a more official explanation than just speculation (no offense to your post).

Yeah I'm completely done with all of their crap outside of blizzard games on PC. Halo, Fable, Gears…. Fuck all of that I'm not playing it.

None taken. I'm just talking out my ass and integrating corporate think I see far too often. Modest success are often compared to the likes of Fortnite when you have to answer to investors. Let us all weep.

This is like loving the USA for developing the atomic bomb (so cool and innovate!) and being upset at Hiroshima (I didn't think they would use it!).

Microsoft is a cold, calculating, $3 trillion corporation. What did you expect?

I just still don't gutting id when their engine powers 2 other studio's games, and should have if anything been expanded to their publishing arm as it pumps out higher performant titles than Unreal.

Hits me the same as what EA did with Westwood, another studio that pioneered the early tropes of an entire genre, and it just being another layoff feels lame.

At this point I'm hoping some of the people that leave the studio just go make cool indie boomer shooters.

They have more than enough IP that could make them money, why even take on extra risk, minecraft, activision king's games, elder scrolls, fallout, COD, Halo, Gears, overwatch, diablo, AOE. They said doom and quake content will still be coming. With all these IP, they can already make loads if they execute better, why even spend time and money on IPs that didn't make them money in the past few years.

Not being funny, after swearing id never buy one again during the ABK saga I've actually just bought one.

On the face of it; admitting Game Pass is not profitable and is crap, culling a load of average studios, getting rid of 30% of a bloated work force which isn't producing anything, focusing on their big IPs like TES and Fallout is all good stuff.

I've only bought one for GTA VI, however this is probably the best month Xbox have had in the last 5 years.

You guys are so melodramatic about absolutely meaningless and trivial stuff.

How do you survive in the real world with actual issues beyond, "my games are taking too long", "I need a plastic box to be able to play my electronic game" or "the character in my game isn't sexually attractive enough, they look like a normal person and only marginally better looking than myself"?

I have a fun hobby to escape the "real world with actual issues" and it is being destroyed by bean counters and idiocy. This is an enthusiast board. I feel like this would be the place to discuss those issues regardless of how trivial they are compared to "real world" issues. 🤷‍♂️
