Metal Gear Solid V Res Confirmed: Sub-720p (PS3/360), 720p (XB1), 1080p (PS4)

MGS4 was 1080p on a proprietary engine for the cell processor.

This is the Fox Engine primarily designed for next-gen and x86 architecture that has been ported to make calls on cell and powerpc.

So I wouldn't be surprised if certain strengths of the MGS4 rendering engine are lost.

MGS4 was 1080p?!

I really need to get a higher res TV. 1366x768 just isn't cutting it anymore.

Just looked at the back of the box, and yes, 1080p native.

lol I love the whining over resolution gate yet the 360 crowd would celebrate over their superior muliplatform games. What's with the about-face now?

Destiny is guaranteed to be superior on the PS4. Not even just the visual differences, but whatever else we will be getting out of the money Sony has thrown to Activision/Bungie.

Oh yeah, I forgot Sony had a deal with Activision and Bungie for Destiny. No worries with that one then.

I think they'd both be nuts to show their faces round here after all the pre-launch lies they were spouting. I'd love it if they popped up in one of the threads though, they'd be throwing themselves to the wolves. It would be epic! :)

Ha, they won't. Not unless whatever game in question is equal on both platforms. And looking at his post history, Penello has only posted a few times since he's been back, and only in announcement threads.

I don't know if you're joking or not, but the back of my box of MGS4 says 720p.

Really? I have the one that came with the MGS4 PS3 bundle on release day (the release day of the bundle) and it says 1080p on it.

Indeed.

MGS 4 is not 1080p.

It's not even 720p.

Sure, but probably larger than the biggest area in MGS 4. And no loading screens.

I realize that now, but still saying what's on the back of my box.

Despite the resolution, I'm actually quite impressed with how it looks on last-gen hardware.

Looks a generation apart. Plus double the framerate. Bravo Kojima.

It looks great, but there's actually a part of me which prefers how the ground looks on the PS3 version (aside from resolution of course).

Am I crazy?

What it says on the back of the box does not actually mean the native resolution.

anyway it also says 720p here just to get that mystery out of the way

Edit : well fuck that was blurrier than I though, you can still make it out.

What the fuck are you people on with this back of the box bullshit, lol. Those are just the resolutions which the game is/can be upscaled to.

It is kind of funny though. The ground textures are much sharper and detailed in the PS4 screenshot, but I actually think the blurred and less detailed texture work in the PS3 screenshot looks more realistic. The mud has a really soggy and wet look to it. It could be just that screenshot though.

Ground Zeroes [PS3]

I think the lighting engine for MGS:GZ is much more dynamic and overall better than 4. And the colours are less tinted and fuller in the new game. But from a less technical point of view MGS4 has a great look equal to the newer game.

Ya the mud looks like it's redone almost entirely for PS4 and it's probably partly because of lighting. The PS3 looks more like thick sludge.

Right, but SolidSnakeUS said his copy had 1080p on the back, whereas ours don't, we were just showing that.

That's just because the character models hold up really well.
Watch GZ in motion, watch MGS 4 in motion and the difference is night and day.

What a shame, we can live in hope though right? :)

What a clown, seriously. All this guy does is spread misinformation and propaganda. You can encapsulate everything that is wrong with the xbone by just looking at some of the prominent people who speak on behalf or are employed in the xbox division.

I'm so glad that people like Larry and Albert have been exposed for the who they are (I mean professionally, I'm sure they are nice people in their private lives...).

Just noticed you posted pretty much the same thing. I prefer it too yeah. It somehow looks more realistic.

No, you're not crazy, I prefer PS3 mud too, I know technically it's not the best but it does just look like wet sloppy mud! Haha. It might look different in motion though so I reserve judgement.

Yeah on the PS3 it looks like mud, on the PS4 it looks like dirt. So I'd prefer PS4 definition but with mud instead of dirt

You are not, I already posted my expert analysis in here which shows a clear conclusion.

It looks like mud. PS4 version looks like mud created by a scientist in a lab.

Yeah, just chiming in to say this guy's not crazy and my box also says it 'supports' 1080p. Doesn't mean native 1080p though, probably just bullshit like every 360 box that says 1080p on the back.

of course he did, FuturusX. And it wasn't a mistake - just one in a long line of comments meant to confuse the less connected into the industry about what's going on. They've been doing it this entire lead into the new gen. They are literally playing off people's ignorance, and they know it.

It does look like the PS4 version is more like wet sand based dirt and that the PS3 version looks like that due to limitations of the hardware but actually turned out great.
I just hope we leave footprints in it and can track guards by following their footprints. There's nothing worse than great graphics but no footprints left behind, it kinda breaks immersion. I'm kinda exaggerating about the nothing worse part by the way before someone calls me out on it. :)
