Lol, I want to try this.
I bet I won't beat more than a four or five games. But it could push me to play more stuff from my backlog, which would be a godsend. :) I think I've actually completed 3 games last year, so having 12 (1 per month) would still be a huge success story for me in 2014 :p

Playing :
Steamworld Dig (3DS)
Attack of The Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale (3DS)
New Super Mario U (Wii U)
Bit Trip Runner 2 (iOS+PC+WiiU)
Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)
Zombie U (Wii U)
COD BLOPS 2 (Wii U)
Slayin (iOS)
Threes (iOS)

On hold:
GTA V
GT6

Backlog:
lol.
Over 200+ games.

COMPLETED! Challenge List:

• Game1: Steamworld Dig [3DS] - 8 Hours [100%](16/02/2014)

steamworld-banner-540x400.png

I've throughly enjoyed this game, I feel like it's a little gem on the eShop. Loved the art, loved its gameplay mix of Mr Driller meets Spelunky meets Metroid. Perfect length too, I felt compelled to explore every nook and cranny, upgraded all my gear and ended up beating the game in 8 hours sharp in 4 sittings... last time such a thing happened was ages ago, I was damn hooked till I found the very last mineral! Game can probably be completed in 4 or 5 hours if you don't care about 100%ing or close to that and just want to be done with it as quickly as possible, but I don't know anybody who did that... it's too freakin' addicting getting all the drops&upgrades.
I didn't die much, so at most you could add half an hour on top of my completion's time. I haven't had the chance to try Steam's version on my PC, but I have to say I was glad there was a map slapped on the bottom screen of my 3DS. It's one of the few titles I didn't bother to play in 3D at all, didn't add much (if anything) visually, and I needed all the batteries' power I could muster anyway :D
Game comes truly recommended, definitely worth the money and, more importantly, the time to play it!

I was thinking about doing this but considering the few Games on PS4 it would be damn near impossible. Maybe I'll just do 12 Games this year

13: Gone Home (PC) - 1h (2/18/14)

Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, especially compared to the previous two indies I didn't particularly like. What pushed it over the top for me were the voiced journal entries, in particular.

I realize that the developers had a story they wanted to tell, but I can't help but wish that it had been relegated in significance a bit, and the side stories given a little more of the spotlight.

Playing through God of War: Ghost of Sparta at the minute on the PS3. Stunning to think that this was originally a PSP game, some great stuff going on here. Really enjoying it so far, think I'm near enough the end, about 6 and a half hours in.

This is one of the God of War games I haven't played along with Ascension, anyone think Ascension is worth picking up? I can get it for around €15. I thought I had enough of the series after the third one, but playing through Ghost of Sparta has me craving some more.

Game 03 - Stranglehold ~6 hours (Complete 19/02)

Bought this on launch, got half way through it and then got distracted. Decided to finally get it out of the way today. It is ultimately mediocre but holy hell did it give me the horn for some classic 90's John Woo. It also earns its mediocre status in an odd way, its not as if its simply dull its that some bits are great and some bits are terrible and it all even outs to being ok.

The best things about it are:

1) the level and environment design, even for a seven year old game some of the levels look amazing and the mix of destructible and interactive environments is generally fun.

2) The story and camerwork/choreography in the cutscenes are all strongly reminiscent of John Woo's seminal 90's Hong Kong action movies, the games meant to be a sequel to Hardboiled and I think it achieves this

3) This is sort of tied in to the last bit but the special abilities and the slow motion abilities help to make you feel like you're re-enacting scenes from the movie and really add to the athmosphere.

Things which are just average - the music, it works but its fairly innocuous, the game could also do with subtitles. Some of the mechanics, while reminiscent of the source material and the feeling the game wanted to evoke, were simply annoying or over-used, particularly the spanish standoff mechanic. It was used too much and the slow speed of the aiming reticle made it a pain, but it also felt cool so Im calling it average.

Things that are bad:

1) The game does not hold up well, I dont remember it being quite this rough back in the day but apart from the environments and some textures/models the game looks rough as fuck and the animations are often a bit janky

2) The game is most fun when you're banging through levels and thugs being a badass - so of course the game decides to work against itself here by sending wave after wave of increasingly tough minions against you, theres too many of them and theyre so tough you have to take cover and this makes it boring

3) The controls are sloppy, an odd mix of too slow (the shooting) and too precise/finnicky (the movement)

4) The camera is far too close to your character and frequently limits your field of view to disatrous effect, as well as making the game feel annoyingly claustrophobic

5) Limited weapon selection and limited variety in enemies, the latter wasnt a huge issue but considering how many different guns Tequila uses in Hard Boiled alone I felt the lack of variety in weapons was a problem

6) Not a fault with the game per se but I feel it should have had unlockables which allowed "cheat modes" so you could just bang through levels using special abilities non-stop

I'd actually be interested in playing an updated sequel that addressed the issues mentioned above. I suppose I should have listed length as a negative factor but to be honest the game felt "complete", the pacing was quite good and to be honest the action was already wearing a little thin towards the end. I tried the online back at launch at it was fun if messy, though the servers have been offline a while so I couldnt revisit it. Sans some kind of "Godmode" I dont think I'd bother replaying the game again.

GAME 4
God of War: Ghost of Sparta / PlayStation 3 /
Single Player
- 1st Playthrough
- 7 Hours

I felt a little tired of the series after God of War III, even though I loved every minute of that game and of the entire series, I just needed a long break from it. Ended up playing through Ghost of Sparta last night/tonight, and it was damn fun, it's got me craving more God of War now. The scope of the game too for something that was a PSP title originally is incredible.

I was away from Gaf for a couple weeks, so here are some games I never got around to posting:

4) Assassin's Creed 3 1.25.2014 I don't really understand why this game gets the hate it does. It felt like the other AC games to me.
5) Infamous: Festival of Blood 2.1.2014 A bit disappointing after playing Infamous 2. I wanted to have access to all of my powers from that game. My character felt gimped to me, and the one
vampire power you get didn't make up for it for me.
6) DuckTales Remastered 2.1.2014
7) FarCry 3 2.8.2014 Loved this game. Loved it, Loved it. I played it for the first time about a week before I finished it. It just sucked me in. I recommend it highly. Though I do think it's funny that this game has basically the same plot as Tomb Raider and nobody gave it the crap TR13 got for how it handeled Laura's transformation from defenseless girl into a mass murderer. Gender bias at work I guess...

Game 1: KZ:SF - 02-11-12 - About 180 hours including MP
Platted this and loved every minute of it

Very entertaining but short and not much replay

Game 5: Knack - 02-17-14 Somewhere around 12 hours on Hard
Debating on getting more trophies or no, apparently a trophy run involves way more plays than I care to do, especially with all the other stuff out.

Game 6: Contrast - 01-01-14
100%'d this but there isn't a plat for it :(

Game 7: Urban Trials Freestyle - 02-08-14

Here a link to my Backloggery account if you want to see me not update my games as I go along. I do record Beaten and Completed though.

Game 1: Skullgirls - 6 hours - 01/07/14
Did all the campaigns for all the characters. I suck at the game, but it was fun to see the different styles.

Game 2: Knack - 01/10/14
Really hard and repetitive, but it was fun and it's gorgeous to look at.

Game 3: Electronic Super Joy - 2h30 - 01/26/14
I LOST MY BUTT AND I KILLED THE GUY WHO STOLE IT FROM ME. Good platformer with awesome soundtrack and silly sound effect.

Game 4: Hammerwatch - 9 hours - 01/30/14
This game was my first retro style gauntlet game and it was amazing. Really loved killing thousands and thousands of enemies, collecting gold and exploring the levels.

Game 5: Quantum Conundrum - 4.8 hours - 01/31/14
Good puzzle game with good humor and cool physic system. The last puzzles are kind of frustrating but it's a cool game to play with

Game 6: Fire Emblem : Awakening - 22:53 - 02/12/14
My first Fire Emblem and I played on Casual and it was really fun. The social options are awkward at best, but the game play is really good.

Game 7: Pokemon Sapphire - 02/23/14 - 37:57
First time beating Gen 3. Man, the Elite 4 do not kid around in this one. Maybe it was because I didnt have a Ice type, but I had a lot of trouble. The pokemons are pretty weird and the fact that half the game is on water is kinda annoying since you see tons of Tentacool and Wingulls.

Game 8: Pilotwings Resort - 02/24/14 - 2:46
I have done every mission and gotten a 2 star rating or more. I wont try to complete the game probably. It's a okay game to teach about the 3D and the joystick, but it's really not my cup of tea. It's fairly easy too and I suspect that Perfecting the courses would take a long long time.

Game 9 : Orcs Must Die 2 - 03/04/14 - 6 hours
I liked the first game, and I enjoyed this one too, but it does feel really coop focus compared to the first one. Kinda easier too. By the end I spammed Archers and wall arrow traps and I won easily on the last level.

Game 10 : South Park : The Stick of Truth - 17 hours
Really enjoyed the game as a fan of the show. The gameplay was uninteresting, but I didnt play the game for the gameplay, but to see a 14 hours long episode of South Park. And I got what I wanted. Would recommend to every fan of the show.

Game 11 : The Legend of Zelda : Wind Waker HD - 33 hours
Went for a couple of side missions and explored the world. Was the first time that I finished the game alone without a friend around. Really good, but I think it might be the hardest game of the series to get 100% at with all the little thing you can miss.

Game 12 : Batman : Arkham Origin - 19 hours
The story is pretty good and the game is like every other Arkham games, but it's buggier. I wanted to 100% it, but I got a bug on one of the tower and could not desactivate the electric fence for some reason. So that kind of put me down from finishing the rest of the stuff since I wont be able to go see Enigma any way.

Game 13 : Deadlight - 3:10 - 24/04/14
A pretty okay platformer with good controls, but it's pretty buggy where some animation glitch or you cant pick up some items for some reasons. Pretty short and end with a rough cut, but it was fun. Really short too.

Game 14 : Tearaway - 6-7 ish hours - 26/04/14
If this game came bundled with the Vita, it would really show the potential of the Vita. This game use 100% of what the Vita can do mechanic wise. It use both cameras, the Sixaxis, the buttons, the touch pads and screen. Everything. And it make it part of the gameplay and environment. As far as the game itself goes, it's a platformer with a lot of collectibles and light puzzles. Would recommend to every Vita owners.

Game 15 : Knights of Pen and Paper +1 - 13:55 - 03/30/14
Play a RPG from the point of view of the players of D&D. A final Fantasy ish RPG with retro style sprites, and a lot of repetitive quests. It was fun and the humor will be great for somebody who played D&D or pen and paper role playing games.

Game 16 : Dragon's Crown [Vita] - 11:25 - 04/02/14
Pretty cool beat em up game with really great artstyle and lots of "qualities". Played through as a Amazon and had a lot of fun with pretty much doing screws attack every seconds. Played Solo since I'm at work, but hey that's fine.

Game 17 : Diablo 3 : Reaper of Souls - 05/07/14
Played through the game as a Crusader. It was better than the first time around, but it's still way too easy to play through and you always feel as a half god and nearly invincible while playing the game.

Game 18: Alien: Colonial Marines - 7:10 - 05/11/14
Not as bad as a thought it would be, they probably fixed a lot of the bugs by the time I played it. Still not a really good game, and do not feel like an alien movie at all. 2/5 I would say, grab it if you like Aliens on the cheap.

Game 19 : Far Cry [PC] - 12:50 - 05/27/14
Pretty fun game, expected a open world game, and got a Crysis type of game instead. It's a brutal game where you have to use strategy and cant just go around like crazy most of the time. Enemies can snipe you easily and from across the map, and your health is falling really fast even at normal. Pretty frustrating but fun. The ending cinematic is REALLY rushed out though. 3/5

Game 20 : Pokemon Pearl - 39 hours - 06/01/14
Fun Pokemon game, that add a lot of cool widgets to the game. New Pokemons look fine and the combat is faster now. Elite 4 is pretty hard with Cynthia having the most annoying Pokemon possibles, but her Water dragon was her demise that allowed me to revive my whole team and kill her Spiritomb. Next, Pokemon Black!

Game 21 : Yoshi New Island - 6 hours - 06/08/14
Okay ish Yoshi island game. The game is not bad, but the levels are really short, the music is the same throughout the game and it's extremely easy. I ended the game with 112 lives. The new aesthetic is alright, but I would have preferred a SNES style. 6/10

Game 22 : Binding of Isaac : Wrath of the Lamb - ??? - 06/09/14
I orignally beaten the game by killing Mom, but since then I have killed Blue Baby, the true last boss of the DLC. Way harder and the game have a lot to offer too. Lots of items, lots of stuff to do and hope to do. Rebirth will add over that and fix all the problems we have with the game. Let's hope. 8.5/10

Game 23 : Kirby Triple Stars - 5:42 - 06/12/14
Pretty good Kirby game. A lot of content too. Some powerups are missing but we got some new ones (Clowns and Beetle) and some mini games, including a cool Light Smash Bros game where you pick a Kirby and fight other powered Kirbys. 8/10

Game 24 : Typing of the Dead : Overkill - 3:45 - 06/20/14
Really nice typing game with a nice C movie parody theme. Nothing those long words though. Man, this make me want to take typing lessons.

Game 25 : The Bridge - 3 hours - 06/22/14
I gave up on the Hard mode, but the normal mode is pretty enjoyable. Simple game with some really hard puzzles. I liked it. 3/5

Game 26 : Mario Kart 8 - 07/01/14
Done the whole game in 150cc. Pretty fun and impressive. I suck at it though. Probably the best Mario Kart so far easily
4/5

Game 27 : Shovel Knight - 7:23:59 at 76% - 07/01/14
Excellent game that remove some of the problems I have with NES games (Insta Death with no check points) and make the game a giant homage of Megaman and the whole NES Era. Would recommend without hesitation if you like Megaman. Hoping for a Shovel Knight 2 as a Metroidvania like Megaman ZX where all the castles are interconnected.
4.5/5

Game 28 : Mario Kart : Super Circuit (GBA) - 01:15 - 07/19/14
Short and pretty easy in 100cc. Races are good, but the controls are annoying.

Game 29 : Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ - 01:43 - 07/21/14
Second Wario Ware game. Pretty fun and quick. Sad that there is not more Nintendo based Minigames though.

Game 30 : Metroid Fusion - Clear time 4:11 Rate of 53% - 08/06/14
Pretty fun Metroid game. Quite linear though. A lot of frustrating bosses like Nightmare and not many expansions on powers or enemies.

Game 31 : Adventure Time : Hey Ice King! Where is our garbage!? - 04:43 - 09/12/14
Cool little Zelda 2 type of game with Adventure time theme over it. Fun but really basic in content and lenght. 3.5/5 if you like the theme.

Game 32 : Fallout : New Vegas : GOTY - 67 hours - 09/13/14
Finally done. Game is pretty big and I did less than half of what was possible and there is many different routes and options.Enjoyed most of the DLC. Big Mountain was fun and pretty silly, Lonely Road was kinda... weird? They kept talking about something that happened but that we never see in game, which make the whole DLC kinda confusing. Overall a really good game but with a lot of problems. 4/5

Game 33 : Sir, You Are Being Hunted - 4 hours - 09/21/14
A nice survival game that I kickstarted a while back. It's like a Slender type game where you go around and try to collect stones in the wild, while gentlemen robots try to hunt you. It's mostly a game of hide and seek where direct confrontation is really hard since ammo is really really hard and guns are pretty hard to get too. 15 pieces over 5 randomly generated islands. Many type of robots, but you hope to never see what they can do. The more pieces you have, the more type of robots appear. Play time was 2 hours and 10 min but save points are only boats or the center of the center island, so if you die with 3 pieces in your inventory, you have to go get them back. 3/5

Game 34 : Paranautical Activity - 1 hour - 10/27/14
Binding of Isaac mixed with Quake. Pretty fun to play with. A pretty big challenge but being in 3D really change the dynamic and jumping is pretty important. 3/5

Game 35 : Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze - 10/29/14
Damn this game is hard. I dont "like" the game, but it's an excellent game. I'm not a fan of hard platformers or games with extremely scripted bosses. But the music, graphics, style and controls are excellent. 4/5

Game 36: Outlast - 4:30- 10/01/14
Decided to give the game an another try for Halloween. Did it in one shot and it's a pretty okay game. Not that spooky, mostly disturbing with jump scares. It's amnesia without puzzles. If you like the hide and run gameplay, you will like it. 4/5

Game 37 : Civilization V : Brave new World - About 6 hours - 11/08/14
Not the biggest Civ or turn based strategy guy out there but the "Next turn" mentality is really addictive. Won a game in Brave New World in Time. I was going for Cultural, but the other guy had too much Culture, so I went for Science and Time Victory surprised me.

Game 38 : The Binding of Isaac : Rebirth - 50 hours and going - 10/11/14
Finally got all 16 endings for the game. My last run was crazy as hell. Still have about 120 items left to complete the game, but I will stop playing for a while. Trying to not burn the game too much. Really fun and addictive. 5/5

Game 39 : I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - 8 hours - 11/13/14
Classic point and click with really obscure puzzle and the ending is really weird in term of trial and error to get the good ending. Music is nice, and the story is meh, voice acting is okay but the music is too loud to hear it. Some technical problem on Steam too.. 3/5

Game 40 : Alien Isolation - 13 hours
Pretty good alien game. Less of a focus on combat, and more on hide and seek. Kinda long, but pretty good. Story is pretty good and could easily be seen as a legit story in the Alien universe.
4.5/5

Game 41 : Papers, Please - 3:08
Got ending 9 out of 20. Really fun game that make you think and focus really hard. Depressing game where you feel trapped all the time. 4/5

Game 42 : Super Smash Bros Wii U - 15 ish hours
Unlocked all the fighters, really big game. Tons of stuff left to do. It's probably the best Smash to date.

Game 43 : Captain Toad : Treasure Tracker - 7 hours
Completed all 3 chapters and a couple of the bonus one. Really cute and bright game. Would recommend anybody who want a light puzzle game or a perfect game to teach game mechanism to a young kid.

Game 44 : Ducktales Remastered - 3 hours - 12/28/14
A really easy platformer with kinda clunky controls and over cinematic story. Never played the original, but this one is not that good. 2.5/5

Game 45 : Pac-Man Championship Edition DX - 2 hours - 12/28/14
Pac Man on Acid while in a rave party. Awesome version of the classic game that make you feel like you are going 200 on the highway. Done all the maps in 5 min in expert. 4.5/5

Game 46 : The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - 13 hours - 12/28/14
A surprisingly good Diablo type of game, more in the line of Titan Quest. The setting is good and the combat feel good too. The rage mechanic is kinda meh but the game is good and the whole game is voice acted from beginning to end. Will try the sequel for sure! 4/5

Game 47 : Commander Keen Episode 1 - 1 hour 20 minute - 12/29/14
For all the time I played the game, I think it's the first time I finished it. Great game for it's time and the first PC platformer with scrollable background. Really short and pretty annoying in some parts, but the save function really make it easier to play. 2/5

Game 48 : Evoland - 3 hours - 12/30/14
An homage game to the RPG of before. A nostalgic little game. Go play it if you want to feel a little nostalgic. 3/5

Game 49 : Electronic Super Joy : Groove City - 70 minutes - 12/30/14
Short game , but damn is it hard. Way harder than the original game. Would recommend if you want more of Electronic Super Joy. Sountrack is awesome as always.

Game 50 : F.E.A.R : Extraction Point - 5 hours - 12/31/14
Been a while since I played F.E.A.R and wanted to get on the backlog of the series. Game is pretty good. Weapons still feel good to use but the spookyness factor was a little light even if they upped the darkness compared to the first one.

Game 51 : Thomas was Alone - 2:40 - 12/31/14
A nice narrative puzzle game about shapes. Never before has a square been as interesting. Highly recommended if you like light platforming puzzles and narration. 4/5

Game 52 : Half Life : Blue Shift - 3 hours - 12/31/14
More Half-Life. Way shorter than the two first, but a lot of reference to the first one and Opposite Force. Good ideas too, but some annoying escort going on and a lot of bugs. 3/5

AND IT'S DONE. SEE YOU IN 2015!

Game #7: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - 20 hours

I didn't sell my vita just for this game and it was definitely worth it. It's so over the top and it really doesn't take itself serious. The courtroom sections were kinda meh and I encountered some glitches in it, but aside from that the game was awesome. Very likable characters with the exception of only a few, and a solid story. 8/10

Game 5: Quantum Conundrum - 01/31/14 - 4.8 hours
Good puzzle game with good humor and cool physic system. The last puzzles are kind of frustrating but it's a cool game to play with

How does it compare to Portal in terms of cleverness of the puzzles? Are they simpler, harder, more fun, less fun?

Imagine my surprise when I beat it on hard and it unlocked very hard. Was not expecting that. Very cool story and thoroughly enjoyable game but hard. Can't believe its a kids game :)

I really enjoyed it the first few playthroughs, it just became tedious just when I was going for the platinum and diamond Knack, that was about 6 playthroughs though. I don't think it warranted the criticism it got in the press, nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be.

How many plays does it take to plat? I know at least two but was thinking most of the trophies could be stage selected? Six...definitely not on board for that. I platted KZ which at least had MP to break it up. Those audio logs were monotonous.

Yea I really don't get all the hate either. Sad because this was a decent game. Not perfect but decent.

Game 12: Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness (PS3) - Completed 20/2/14. 52:02

The fifth game in the series I've bought and the first one I've ever got into, I knew my perseverance would pay off eventually. Absolutely loved it - got to the final boss last night at a leisurely pace and without too much trouble and was amazed at how poerful he was and thought I'd never do it, couple of hours grind later I went back and handed him his arse. Apparently there's a ton of post-game stuff I can do now to give my PS3 something to do until Dark Souls 2 too which is cool. Bought this expecting to not finish it so I'm very pleased I have, superb game.

The list.

Really different I would say. Most of the puzzles are timing based on light/heavy dimensions changes, like throwing a light couch at a window then switching to the heavy dimension to break the window.
It get pretty complicated by the end, but it's always really streamlined. In Portal you are put in a big room and have to figure the right combination to do things. In Quantum, you pretty much always see the answer and it's more a corridor of lower puzzles that are more timing based than anything else. By the end, you are surfing in the air on couch while altering the time to be able to do your jumps correctly. I would recommend it.

Also the humor is pretty great. You have a "Glados" type of uncle and when you switch dimensions everything around you switch including the portraits.

It took me 6 because you need diamond knack for the platinum, took me 5 playthroughs to get 10 diamonds to unlock him. It was a decent game, if it was 10 years ago I think it would've got decent reviews. It's like an old school platformer.

Game 11: Bravely Default [3DS] 74:57

Loved the game, battle system was really great. Punished for making mistakes and had that feel good sensation when you play well. Cannot wait for more in this series!

Updated post!

Progress has slowed down in February for me as predicted. Only three games to add to the list so far.

Game 14: Just Cause 2 - 11.5 Hours
Great fun but just got to the stage I wanted it finished so used the BOLOPatch just to unlock the last couple of story missions to get it done.

Game 15: Jazzpunk - 2.3 Hours
All sorts of random awesomeness, really enjoyed my time with it par running into a few game breaking bugs. Really frustrating to see issues like this in a game so short.

Game 16:Metro 2033 - 9.4 Hours
Glad I finally got round to play this. Great game, visuals are stunning to boot. Recommended to everyone who wants an FPS fix. Got Last Light installed but not sure when that will get started.

My 1 Year Challenge FULL List -original post

Man, this thread is really motivating me to play games! Can't believe I'm already writing a second post, I usually let pass weeks between games, and now I even want to complete them instead of hanging on GAF doing nothing :p
Either way, got this game on the eShop for the measly price of €3 thanks to a promotion which is going till Feb23rd. Having fun with it, game is definitely not for everyone and most would probably consider it boring.
For me it fills the void left by the PS2 generation, where you would have this huge diversity of games/RPGs with quirky stories, game oozes atmosphere and I'm fascinated by the late 1950's Tokyo setting: you're a ten years old boy living who recently moved together with parents, who now owns a dry cleaner place, from the countryside.
On the background, you have a story where Kaijus (Godzilla-like monsters, have you seen Pacific
Rim?) are both real AND on TV Shows, as they are their fights vs Super Humans (Ultraman, Kamen Rider etc.).
Underneat the jrpg story, fetch quests mechanics, explorations and triggering dialogues, there's a simple Rock/Paper/Scissors cards game where you find monster cards by hunting for gems on the ground and later challenge your friends and such. Still early in the game so I don't know where this is going or where the Kaijus will fit in.
Game is well written in its simplicity, the art is gorgeous. Having fun with it, it's super relaxing and the perfect in-bed at night game :)

Will update the post as I go on.

Thought it was high time I gave you guys an update on my version of this challenge. I've been going for 52 100% completions in a year.

Game 1: Peggle 2 for 1000G
Game 2: Lara Croft: Guardian of Light for 200G
Game 3: Harms Way for 200G
Game 4: Mini Ninjas for 1000G
Game 5: Crackdown for 1250G
Game 6: Shoot Many Robots for 200G

Currently playing Bastion, completed the story, just need to do New Game Plus mode and that will be done too. Not sure if anyone else has been doing this version of the challenge here but if so I'd like to know how it's going. I'm already about a week or two behind schedule (hence Harms Way for an easy completion).

Drill Dozer!! Why weren't ya loved more by the world!? Ya coulda made a cool lil anime! An a sequel for sures! C'mon Game Freak, enough Pokémon! Take a break an do something new (in terms of retail releases)! I play this every year for the past 8 years. Wows, its that old already??

Games Beaten: 11 / 52
Total Playtime: 88 hours, 57 minutes

link!

Game 22: Hero of the Kingdom - 5 hours

Got it in the Gala bundle I think...I really enjoyed it. It's really simple, looks like an RTS, plays like a simple puzzle/hidden object type game...though I really don't think there's any other game out there like this? Buy/sell/trade items to get other items to help villagers, clear quests, gameplay just consists of clicking and making sure you have the items needed. 5 hours was getting every single achievement. Was highly relaxing and enjoyable while listening to podcasts.

Game 7: Splinter Cell: Blacklist - 15 hour on ??
A good balance of old splinter cell and refinements added to ease stealth mechanic's rough edges. Much better than the last one that went too fact on the executes

Game 8: Tomb Raider - 18 hours on 2/21
A pretty fun reboot of the franchise. I enjoyed it enough to go collect everything and all challenges on the first go around. I prefer the Uncharted series more, but i would be interested in a sequel

Still ahead of the weeks by one but i took a bit of a delay between game 7 and 8

Game 5: NES Remix - Completed all challenges - 23h 05mins
This is a great game! Tons of content and well worth the money. It really revitalises these old NES games and playing snippets of them makes their flaws more forgivable. Good Miiverse integration which encouraged me to beat other peoples scores and go for the rainbow stars. Highly recommended - 8/10

Game 6: Mighty Switch Force - Hyperdrive Edition. Completed all levels. 5 hours
An enjoyable enough little game with sharp graphics and a nice dance soundtrack. Having said that, once I'd beaten the levels, I wasn't particularly compelled to try to beat my times and gain a star. Certainly worth what I paid for it but not especially memorable. Not enough level variety. 6/10.

I decided to take up the 52 game challenge as well (well, 55 for me). I went through all the games in my backlog for the 'old consoles' and prioritized playing those so I can worry less about trying to get through backlog on 6 different platforms.

Finished:
1. The Stanley Parable - 4 hours
This was a fun little game to expirment with after coming off a month-long gameless drought. Exploring the endings was fun (I think I probably saw most of them), but getting the achievements was even more so, since they are set up as a kind of ARG for the community to discover.

2. Mass Effect 3 - 12 hours
I had started this back at the time of its release in 2012, but stopped right before the final mission. It was offensive that I needed to play the multiplayer to get my 'readiness' to a score that would lead to the best possible endings. I completed every quest and side quest, kept everyone alive, and generally strove for a perfect save over the course of three games, and I had to stop to play this dumb co-op shooter online? No thanks. Hearing the generally negative consensus about the ending was the icing on the cake, so I set this down for a long time.

After listening to the Giant Bomb guys talk about the quality of the DLC and the revised ending (as well as finding out a patch removed the MP requirement for the best endings), I decided to power through the DLC and finish up the game.

I thought the DLC was all fun, though they all focused on different things. Citadel was very light-hearted, and it was a lot of fun to just hang around with all the Mass Effect characters having a party. Leviathan, on the other hand, feels almost like a mission cut from the game. It's backstory on the Reapers that makes the ending feel more fleshed out and plausible. I can imagine that without Leviathan as a precursor, the ending could feel a bit out of left field.

And finally there was Omega. Omega lands somewhere in the middle of Leviathan and Citadel. The story is not terribly important in the grand scheme of things, but its mostly combat driven. It's still fun, but definitely the most skippable of the DLC packs.

After I played the DLC, I finished off the story. I found the endings to actually be quite satisfying, and now I feel I'm at peace with the franchise and ready for whatever comes out next.

3. Guacamelee - 6 hours
This game was quite similar to Bastion. Similar length, fantastic polish on the visual style, music, and writing. Great controls, fun combat, good level design, good collectibles. Hard to find a more fun six hour experience.

4. Hearthstone - 20 hours
I had a pretty good time with this. I'm calling getting level 10 on every class and getting several 5-6 win arena runs "completion" here. Arena mode was a lot of fun because it's a roughly even starting point for every player. Ranked mode is with pre-constructed decks, however, and collecting cards at this point is an extremely slow, expensive process. It also just doesn't seem as fun to have 30 super synergistic cards and then effectively just hope you draw in an order that lets you use them correctly.

5. Ni No Kuni - 30 hours
Ni No Kuni is another game that I had pumped a lot of time into but then never finished. I had made it about a third of the way through the story, and putting in another 30 hours or so this year let me finish it off. I'm not sure how to feel about this game, almost everything that I thought was done well still felt like it had some pretty glaring weaknesses. The writing / music / visual style are all well done, but the combat system that has tons of mechanics, but they aren't really usable. They tried to make a very complex game: a party of three players, hundreds of different creatures, each of those creatures can have various 'signs' that make work in a paper/rock/scissors fashion, elemental strengths and resistances, dozens of abilities but your creature can only use 1-4 at a time, and a non-regenerating mana bar. The mana bar is probably the biggest problem. Your combat options are extremely limited by the fact that you can only use 5-10 abilities before your character's mana bar dries up (barring some regeneration items that drop over the course of the fight). This would be alright for boss fights to add some challenge and strategy, but the fact that the mana bar doesn't regenerate between fights means you're trying to get through trash mobs without every using an ability. The game mostly devolves into having a hugely defensive creature using some sort of taunt and not taking much damage, then having your melee attackers wail away. The AI also seems very confused about what to do. Even getting the AI to use defensive skills to not get one-shotted out of the fight when a boss uses an ability can be really difficult (and actually impossible a new AI tactic is learned halfway through the game). Overall the combat system had tons and tons of mechanics, but none of it was particularly usable. I still enjoyed my time with the game, but it did leave me wondering how great the game could have been if all those mechanics were actually useful.

6. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - 3 hours
I don't think any other game has felt so much like a cinematic experience. I guess Journey would be the closest thing I've played to Brothers, but I have to say that I enjoyed Brothers a lot more. The environments are gorgeous and varied, and this is a perfect "single-sitting" game.

7. Assassin's Creed 4 - 30 hours
I came into this with low expectations. I only got a couple hours into AC3 before giving it up completely. I probably would have stalled my video game playing on this had I not been trying to do this 52 game commitment. The first few hours are not particularly enthralling, but they're not so bad that I would give up the game entirely. Just bad enough that I would procastinate.

After perservering, the game really opens up. A lot of the story missions still rely on the ever tedious eavesdropping and tailing. And after 30 hours with the game, I'm still not even close to understanding guard's vision range, AI, or alarmed / in combat states. But pretty much everything else in the game is a lot of fun.

The naval combat feels challenging and meaty. There's a million different collectibles that reward you for running around the cities and islands in the game. The sea shanties are good fun to listen to as you sail around at travel speed. It was a relief that the story didn't take itself quite so seriously this time (for the most part). The character motivations don't make a great deal of sense, and there are some character deaths that try to elicit some emotional response, but other than Blackbeard, I couldn't actually name a character, so those fell flat.

Overall, this game is worth you're time if you're looking to play something that isn't too challenging and doesn't take itself too seriously.

8. Fez - 5 hours
This game was fun for the first hour or so, but after that it just got really tiresome to do the zone navigations over and over again to try to find my way to any possible remaining puzzle piece. The warp gates were particularly misleading. I would make my way down a path of 3 or so rooms, and see that there's just one more left to go, but then take a warp gate that funnels me back to the first room. And then I have to a.) find the door out of the 7 in the warp room that leads to the chain of rooms I'm trying to get through and b.) do the platforming all over again. A cool concept game, but I found my patience running short with it near the end and just looking up 5-6 solutions towards the end of the game (requiring a QR reader...seriously) just to finish it off and move on to something else.

9. Titanfall - 12 hours

10. Diablo 3 - Reaper of Souls - 40 hours

11. Dishonored - 15 hours

12. Trials Fusion - 10 hours

13. Dark Souls 2 - 50 hours

14. Transistor - 5 hours

15. Beyond Two Souls - 18 hours

16. SteamWorld Dig - 4 hours

17. Wolfenstein - 14 hours

18. Metal Gear - 7 hours

19. The Walking Dead: Season 1 - 12 hours

20. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor - 20 hours

21. The Banner Saga - 12 hours

22. Destiny - 20 hours

23. McPixel - 1.5 hours

24. Super Meat Boy - 12 hours

25. World of Warcraft - Warlords of Draenor - 30 hours

26. Metal Gear Solid 2 HD - 15 hours

What's up for the rest of the year?
My main goals were to play the 2014 games that I absoultely couldn't wait on, as well as finishing anything in my PS3 / 360 backlog that I would regret never playing. After this year, I would like to be able to say that I've played the majority of the canon for both of the consoles.

Really fun puzzle game. Never gets too challenging, but mixes it up enough to keep you interested all the way through. Nice narration too. I'm glad i waited to play this on the vita. It felt like a perfect fit for the platform

Game 10: Broken Age Act 1 - 3 hours on 2/22
Ah my first backed kick starter and my first completed kick starter game. Not Tim's best work, but still a lot of fun. Its great to have Tim's writing style back in point and click adventures. It was also cool to see my names in the credits. One final note is its got me itching to go back and replay Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. Its crazy to me these two games aren't available digitally.

8) The Guided Fate Paradox ~40H

The Guided Fate Paradox was a pretty good roguelike for most of the game. The extra stuff was very grindy and I didn't want to put the hours
150-200+
to 100% the game. That being said I really enjoyed the main story and the extra dungeons I did tackle. Obviously has the anime cliches in it, though fan service outside of maid/butler uniforms is absent from the game.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Don't have a real gaming PC around right now, but I did have something good enough to try out Escape Goat. And you know what? That's a really cool little game. I'm glad I played it.

Anyway, that brings my total up to 12. Bravely Default was a killer.

Game 23: Cubetractor / 5 hours
I really enjoyed this puzzler. I beat the main levels and 3/4's of the side missions. I might go back for the others sometime, but figured I'd mark it done.

Welcome to Tentacool and Wingull world. Good game, but my pokemons really felt underpowered and I seem to had to farm way more than Gen 1 and 2. Probably because half the game is populated with lvl 12 Tentacool and Wingull, so you rely on your Electric pokemon to always be in front and just Shock everything.

Time to go to Gen IV.

Finally, first legit update.

#1: Gunpoint - Steam says 3 hours, but i think it's 3,5. 16/01/14

Loved it. Found the game really fun and the story was cool. Gameplay was simple and enjoyable. May repeat later, cuz, u know.

#2: CS:GO - 76 hours... so far.

Well, it's Counter-Strike. With hats. Pretty much it, feels kinda simplified after CS:S, but still a nice game.

#3: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - 73:01. 23/02/14

I played it in 2012, but my friend borrowed a game and i decided to start over. So, it took me around 55 hours for the main story, rest are sidequests and Platinum Trophy. That's the game who gave me belief (lol) in JPRG again. Now it's time to play FFXIII's (liked first one), friend gave me Tales of Graces F and Eternal Sonata, which is awesome. Great game, if you have PS3 and kinda like RPG's - just go for it. 50 hours of your life will be eaten for sure.

So, what's next... i'm thinking of replaying Max Payne 3 and maybe it's time to start Brothers... i dunno. Oh, yeah, recently played JazzPunk, but about it later.

Game 13: Portal 2 (PS3) - Completed 23/2/14. about 9 hours

It's alright I guess. Had nowhere near the effect the first one did on me although that was a lofty expectation. The puzzles are well done for the most part considering how restrictive their formula is. Stephen Merchant was much less irritating than I'd anticipated. I could live without a third.

Great thread. I may not make 52 games, but if I can decimate my backlog this year, that's good enough for me.

My progress so far:

Game 1: Call of Duty: Ghosts [PS4] 7.5 hours – finished in January
I’m so glad I didn’t let word of mouth put me off this game, because I absolutely loved the campaign. CoD's trademark bombastic action is just what I needed after the horrible slogs of Killzone: Shadow Fall and the Battlefield 4 campaign. Set-piece after set-piece made me smile with destructive glee, and, oh, what an ending. Multi will last me a good long time.

Game 2: Battlefield 4 [PS4] 7 hours – finished in January
The campaign had its moments, but for me, it was overlong and I could not wait for it to be over. Fortunately, the game’s multiplayer is amazing. Love the high player counts and destructible environments. Shame about the buggy release and current lack of features such as the ability to customize classes and loadouts outside of a match. The game plays great. I do wish it looked better.

Game 3: Outlast [PC] 8 hours – finished in January
This little treat came out of nowhere and scared the bejeezus out of me. Gorgeously grisly graphics kept me going through what felt like an overlong game. There were plenty of great moments, but getting repeatedly thrashed by the
hulking boss dude
who was later replaced by the
repetitive spirit dude
became irritating. I loved the atmosphere and writing, spare as it was.

Game 4: Typing of the Dead [PC] 3 hours – finished in January
Good, silly fun. The profane writing and action had me chuckling all the way through, and the ending was unexpectedly satisfying. Definitely exceeded my expectations.

Game 5: Crysis [Xbox 360] 10 hours – finished in January
It took me a while to warm to this game, but I enjoyed it. Drop-dead gorgeous even on 360, a platform on which it has no right to look this good. I played in 3D and was wowed. Some trademark Crysis® frustrating bits marred what was otherwise a pleasant surprise and a pretty epic adventure.

Game 6: Prey [Xbox 360] 9.5 hours – finished in January
What a wonderful surprise. I loved the art style, atmosphere, and gunplay. The writing had a sense of humor, and a couple of lines near the end of the game when the main character voiced his frustration with his situation had me laughing out loud. The Art Bell Coast-to Coast radio segments were a hoot, too. Really a hidden gem from last generation--very satisfying. I’ve thought about this game a lot since completing it. Especially on clear, starry nights, I look up to the skies and think fondly back to Prey.

Game 7: Call of Duty Black Ops 2 [Xbox 360] 8.5 hours – finished February 2
This is quite possibly the most epic campaign I’ve played in the genre. Insane action backed by incredible spectacle. I played in 3D and have to say, the game impressed me just as much as similar titles on next-gen consoles. Wowza.

Game 8: Nano Assault Neo [Wii U] 3 hours – finished February 3
Here’s a twin-stick shooter with very pretty graphics. The last two chapters of the game seemed dauntingly difficult at first, but with patience and perseverance, I pushed through what was ultimately a satisfying challenge in a visually memorable bite-size snack of a game. I’ll buy another installment for sure.

Game 9: Limbo [Xbox 360] 3.5 hours – finished February 8
What a dark little game. The black-and-white art style was arresting and the gameplay was at times ingenious, with some devious puzzles and challenges. The ending presented some unexpected questions that I ultimately dismissed, determining the only sensible interpretation was that the developers wanted to get people talking about their game. I enjoyed the romp, though, as the game was unique enough to be worthwhile.

Game 10: Tomb Raider: Underworld [Xbox 360] 14 hours – finished February 15
Janky controls marred what was otherwise an enjoyable adventure with our fair Lady Croft. Graphics are still rather pretty and some sequences were truly exciting, but an air of mustiness hung beneath the old-school flair and detracted from the experience. This game isn’t terribly old, but it feels like it is. Not being a huge fan of puzzles these days, I loved some and loathed others.

Game 11. BioShock 2 [Xbox 360] 16 hours – finished February 23
Are video games art? This one is. Having now played all three BioShocks, I can safely say this is my favorite. Some said this was a sequel that did not need to be; I, for one, am thankful that it is. Rapture is an incredible world, so well realized through art and sound design, and 2K Marin more than did it justice. I very much enjoyed the characters—Augustus Sinclair, Eleanor, and Sophia Lamb—and piecing together the story through those oh-so-well-done audiologs. This is an unforgettable adventure, superior to the original game. A work of sheer beauty—and that’s to say nothing of the excellent Minerva’s Den DLC.

In the queue:
Uncharted: Golden Abyss [PS Vita]
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon [PS3]
Red Dead Redemption [Xbox 360]
God of War [PS3]
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow [PS3]

I'm doing pretty well so far. I've finished:

1. Ratchet & Clank: Nexus
Completed on hard. Currently on Challenge Mode working towards platinum.

2. Puppeteer
Finished once so far. Thinking about playing again to get all the heads and bonus levels.

(The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC)
Completed on very hard and got all the trophies too.

3. Skylanders Swap Force
Completed twice, once on normal then again on hard.

4. Outlast
Finished once on easy, thinking about replaying to get all collectables.

5. Killzone: Shadow Fall
Completed twice, once on hard then again on easy for no deaths. Got all single player trophies.

6. Knack
Completed twice, once in co-op then a solo run.

7. Lego Marvel Super Heroes
Completed to 100% and got the platinum too.

8. Rayman Legends
Been playing this on and off since September but finally reached the end credits this year.

I've completed a few games this year so I may as well start this.

1.Hate Plus 2/1/14
I started this last year and never finished it. I've only done one of the routes through it so I plan to get back to it eventually.

2. Tearway 3/1/14
A charming game which got better as it went on. It's a shame that it was sent out to die.

3. Assassins Creed 4 4/1/14
A significant improvement over the third game and the modern day sections were my favourite part of it. I've always enjoyed the overarching plot of the series and this one didn't disappoint.

4.Persona 4 Golden 11/1/14
Another game that I started last year and only got round to finishing now. This was the reason I got a Vita and I wasn't disappointed.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds ?/1/14
I never played A Link to the Past so the map was unknown to me mostly but I enjoyed this a lot.

6. Broken Age Part 1 31/1/14
A enjoyable game and the ending doesn't feel like they just split the game in half.

7. Persona 4 Arena 1/2/14 (Story Mode)
A nice continuation to Persona 4 and nicely connects the Persona 3 characters into the story.

8. 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors 9/2/14
After playing VLR first, I went back and played this. I already knew some plot points but I was unspoiled on the mastermind and other things and I prefer this over VLR now.

9. Dangan Ronpa 19/2/14
This might be one of my favourite games of the year so far. It was quite predictable in a number of its plot points but still managed to stay interesting throughout.

10. Picrosse3 8/3/14
11. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger 15/3/14
12. Dysfunctional Systems Episode 1 17/3/14

Game #8 - Super Mario 3D World Wii U 27 hours
Completed the game on February 23rd.
Thoroughly enjoyed this game, but I'm still not too keen on the isometric perspective. Made some of the jumps far harder than they should have been. And to be honest I actually finished the game and saw the credits back in November, but I finally went back and did all the extra worlds as well. Only have a handful of green stars/stamps left. The later stages was awesome and I would love to have more of those. Makes me want to see what a modder could possibly make if one had access to the right tools.

I've been beating games at a snail pace so I can't see myself finishing this but I'll hopefully finish off Ys soon and then I can add BD into my completed list. Then X/X-2 and I'll start having a decent amount completed even. I predict I'll do about 20 games by the end.

Week 8. It's been a while since I've made a proper update post, partially because I haven't been playing as much lately. But I did manage to put three games into the "completed" column over the past two weeks.

Battlefield 4 (16) is the first one, though this one might ultimately be a cheat--it falls under MRORANGE's suggestion of "ten hours of multiplayer" counting as a completed game. I took DICE up on their Player Appreciation Month stuff and played through a few double XP weekends as well as the launch of Second Assault. The game still finds new ways to break, unfortunately--the beginning of the month was plagued with a crash bug whenever you entered or spawned in a gunner seat--but Battlefield is still super fun to play when everything's working right (and you're not sucking that round). Caspian Border was nice to see again in modified form, and I'm slowly getting used to Gulf of Oman. Still haven't seen the new Metro, and I'm not sure if I ever want to or not.

Second on the list is Card City Nights (17), a game I didn't even know existed until about a week ago. Playfire made it one of its rewards games (in that playing the game and earning achievements would net me store credit at Green Man Gaming), and the launch price was 50% off $3.99, so I figured why not? What I got was a surprisingly addictive card game with enough strategic depth to make getting all the achievements an interesting challenge. I didn't lose very many rounds in the game--I only lost one best of three/five round against a particularly aggressive opponent--but some of the achievements require a fair amount of planning and exploiting the various game mechanics to get, which was neat. The rewards period and the launch discount are over now, but it's still worth playing the game at full price. The fact that I basically made money playing CCN is just the cherry on top of a sweet sundae.

Finally, I just wrapped up Lego City Undercover (18). I think I like this game, but I definitely don't like it as much as I did when I started it, and I won't be going back to up my completion percentage from an abysmal-sounding 23.2%. Load times are painfully long, and the game has a bunch of mechanical problems that make certain sections annoying to play through. Even when it's not being annoying (which, to be fair, it usually isn't), the game is so easy that it might put you to sleep. But the story has just enough juice to keep the action moving without ever grating on you (though your sense of humour may disagree, it's a really goofy script), and the fact that we even have a good-looking open-world Lego game is something of an accomplishment. I would recommend the game to adults with some reservation, but kids will probably have a blast.

Still working on Bravely Default. I've managed to play a few more missions of Valkyria Chronicles 3 but I might have to put that on temporary hiatus just to keep things moving (or stop being such a chicken and play the damned game without worrying about losing missions). Not sure what I want to play next; I might just concentrate on Bravely Default, or try some more Descent on a lower difficulty. I also have a few Vita games I've been meaning to try at some point: Ys: Memories of Celceta and DanganRonpa. Hmm.

Updated post here.

FIVE so far. I'm gonna do this GAF!
So far this year I have played and beat:

Strider (PS4): Fun game but I found that I did not care about a lot if the extra collectables as time went on. I was able to get through the game fairly easily using only a few attacks and abilities. The level design was not particulary well done and there was not enough variety in the enemies. 3/5

Broken Age Pt 1 (PC): I love the old school lucas arts games. I grew up playing Monkey Island 1&2, Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max, you name it (Although embarassingly I have not played Day of the Tentacle or Grim Fandango!) The art was beautiful and the voice acting top notch. The story was good for the most part, but I think I enjoyed Shay's part a little more than Bella's. The twist at the end has me interested in what's coming next. 4/5

Brothers (PC): I loved this game! There were a lot of interesting puzzles and controlling the two brothers simultaneously was mind-melting at times. The ending was very powerful and there were a lot of gorgeous vistas. The game reminded me of Ico which is never a bad thing! 5/5

Ryse Xbox One: Gorgeous Game, but shallow gameplay. It took me a few sittings to get through this game even though it was fairly short. I never really got into the story and just ended up listening to podcast trudging through combat scenarios and enjoying the graphics. 3/5

Knack PS4: I actually forgot to put this one on my list my first time writing this post. I guess that shows you how much I cared about this game. Knack was incredibly disapointing. Lame characters, story, and gameplay. Even the cool asthetic of the character became troublesome technically because there was always a lot of slowdown whenever knack used one of his super attacks or when he got hit by an enemy. There was some nice texture work and lighting and thats about everything positive I can say about it. I was hoping the game would be more like crash but it focused way too much on combat. Much like Ryse, Knack became very repetitive a few hours into the game. 2/5
