Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

I do think that the gravity mechanic isn't really all that different like the flying sections. It is more like the underwater sections. It just changes up the physics slightly and adds more paths.
Well, the producer's obviously going to say that and none of the other two have anything to do with gameplay (do we even know anything about the game's 'content' beyond the standard expectation of 16 new + 16 retro courses?). Certainly haven't seen the zero gravity thing being used as anything other than a visual gimmick yet. I'm not at all saying the game's going to be bad, just that from everything I've personally seen so far, it's just another MK with a fresh coat of paint.
Nintendo hasn't gone on the record to say exactly "what" features the upcoming Mario Kart 8 will include, let alone what Power-Up's will be included. If it has the mission mode from MKDS, item stealing from MMDD, etc., then I would agree with the producer's claim.
I don't know, Konno is just one of the guys I trust. While I don't know what is exactly new beyond the replays, I do feel that this game is looking to be the ultimate MK. It follows in MK7 in gameplay which arguably has the best gameplay out of all MK games.
You forgot that the courses design are amazing so far.
I don't really judge course design till I get the game. But they look nice graphics wise.

I'm talking about how they are filled with details like the question block vine in Cloudtop Cruise which act as half the course or the Water Park museum.
And of course, the remake of Retro Courses like the bananas on the temple in the DK Jungle one.

And the anti-gravity mechanic could end up being awesome for the general design.

Ahh, so basically visuals/graphics? :p

That's what I meant by great graphics. Anything in terms of visuals.

And yea, out of flying, underwater, and anti-gravity, AG will definitely look the coolest.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
This definitely has potential to be the best game in the series. The graphics are good and there's a decent amount of content shown so far,

If the jump from MK7 > MK8 is anything like the jump from 3D Land > 3D World, it'll be a classic.

I've been gathering a few from quite some time. Some are GAF references, other not so much.. and other are simply game related.

If you have something else in mind please post.

I'm guessing nintendo will reveal a lot more about the game in the next ND. What i really want to learn about it the video sharing. I have a small sliver of hope they'll unveil a course creator too :p

Can someone please explain me the Poetry in Motion one ?

even if it was restricted to private/community games? i see no reason for them not to include it, though they almost definitely will not. i'd love to play MK with friends where we can taunt and talk to eachother in real time, recreate some of that local MP experience. nintendo are really backwards when it comes to this and it's not like the OS has any proper comms options either.

Everyone has a phone with Skype these days =P

That's an entirely false statement. Anti-gravity allows for new shortcut possibilities, never-seen-before track layouts, and it adds a gameplay mechanic (colliding with another player or a bumper gives a boost, without interrupting drifts).

I've yet to see what the difference is between driving along a straight road or up and down a waterfall or moebius strip, other than an inconsequential visual trick. There may be plenty of clever shortcut possibilities, but we don't know if Nintendo will implement any of them yet because none have been shown. I'm not entirely sure what the gameplay mechanic you mention is, since it doesn't seem to have anything to do with anti-grav and sounds quite similar to how MK plays now. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

If, for example, the feather item returned and allowed you to jump from a lower section of track to an anti-grav section above you, or an item could knock you from a higher section to a lower one, that would bring a new form of interaction to the game and thus constitute a new gameplay mechanic. I'm not saying those are good ideas, just the only things I could think of from the top of my head. Adding loops and driving on vertical surfaces instead of horizontal ones, unless there's some trick Nintendo is keeping quiet which will use this to fundamentally change the way you approach the task of driving a kart around a track, is essentially a visual gimmick. That's fine, but let's not pretend it's doing anything genuinely new based on what has been shown so far.

Well, uh, just watch any trailer or gameplay video, it's been there since the very first reveal. When you collide into another driver OR a special bumper on the track, your vehicle will spin and then activate a turbo. This only happens on anti-gravity sections. The relevancy of the mechanic remains to be seen but so far it seems it's as significant as the addition of tricks in Mario Kart Wii – you'll perform such antigravity collisions multiple times per race. Not to mention other changes have been made to incite players to collide, such as the Triple Mushroom item that now makes spin 3 shrooms around the vehicle (like Triple Shell) when it's activated and thus other people can steal them. So, like I said, saying antigravity is purely cosmetic is total bullshit already.

Except all those things could be done no matter which way up the track is. You don't need to be upside down/sideways to have a boost mechanic or steal-able items (a la Double Dash!!). If you can think of a mechanic which fundamentally changes the nature of MK gameplay and can only ever function by having players driving upside-down/sideways etc. (not just something which happens to occur while you're upside down but could just as easily be implemented on a standard MK track), and has been confirmed to exist by official MK8 promotional material, I'd love to hear about it. Until then, I've yet to see any evidence anti-grav is anything but a cosmetic nicety.

You're missing the point – the fact that it's only available during antigravity sections is part of the mechanic, lol. Using your bizarre reasoning, nothing since SMK counts as new feature since it could have been implemented in some other way.

3 things I don't like.

-Anti-Gravity mechanic (it ruins the look of the courses for me).

-Flying.

-Water.

But still, pre-ordered. Might as well.

Maturity, bitches.
Simple reason why I'm excited, MK7 is my favourite of the bunch and that was a rushed release. MK8 has had the benefit of resting in the oven.

Just as long as they don't add a terrible item like the thunder cloud.

On what basis?

I guess its just my opinion. Not a fact.

I think 7 was amazing, but the WiiU is much more capable than the 3DS automatically making it leagues ahead.

Do I know this? Noooooo.....I only watched the trailers and played the demo at BestBuy.

MK Wii did not excite me. I didnt even buy it. Played a handful of tracks.

But this MK....oh boy...it looks to be AAAA Nintendo on TOP of there game.

I can not wait!
