Why do you do this to yourself GAF? Do you crave the soul crushing sadness of disappointment?

considering that gamers are a lot more accepting of story-based and slower paced titles than ever before, coupled with the fact that shenmue is the ultimate cult following game (and now that duke nukem forever is out/ffv13 is now ff15 it's the last great gaming white whale), why couldn't it be a success (if even a limited one')?

Source?

hold it cowboy

the original shenmue was a million plus seller (the budget is what made it 'fail')

the second might have done the same if the dreamcast hadn't been dead in the water by the time of release or if it was released on ps2 instead of xbox

Essentially this.

Considering the Dreamcasts install base at the time of Shenmue's release, selling > 1 million copies is HUGE!

And there were many reasons contributing to Shenmue 2's lack of 'success'; Dreamcast dying, not being released in the US on DC, only on Xbox with a shoddy port and competing with PS2's runaway success. I also believe Shenmue 2 was one of the most imported games ever at the time due to it not being released in the US initially, which also resulted in Xbox sales for the game being lower than expected.

Any game being released on the Dreamcast that wasn't Sonic or Soul Calibur had a shaky ride unfortunately, due to the volatility of the environment at the time.

a good example of high profile releases would be heavy rain being a success

shenmue was far more ambitious and had more gameplay variety, overall it did a lot more in 1999 than heavy rain did in 2010

plus, it's plain to see that gamers are trending towards being invested in more immersive experiences and putting heavier emphasis on story, characters, and atmosphere. even the most mainstream of mainstream titles, call of duty, are pulling in hollywood talent to craft these elements of their game.

I miss importing Dreamcast games. Importing had never been the same. :(

I own a Wii U currently, and am waiting until sometime after this E3 before I decide between PS4 and Xbone...if Shenmue goes to one and not the other, I'm buying that console...

...but there's no way it's going to happen.

I gotta say...even if this turns out to be nothing, it’s still great to see Shenmue fans so excited for once.

I haven’t seen this kind of enthusiasm from the fan-base in years. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Nintendo announces Shenmue 3 exclusive to WiiU
Microsoft announces Agent exclusive to Xbox One
Sony announces The Last Guardian exclusive to PS4

That would be at the same time sad, great and hilarious

Define "very high demand" and tell me, how can Sony and Microsoft actively measure "demand"?

Let's see:

1. They can see people asking for Shenmue on forums.
2. Like it or not, they can check their twitter.
3. They can ask a few thousand people in some kind of online survey.

Now, let's say that Sony or Microsoft do this and get confirmation from a few thousand people asking for a new game.

Shenmue would need to sell millions of copies to be a success. Did Sony or Microsoft ask millions of people whether they would buy the game? Of course they didn't.

Now, considering that both Shenmue games were commercial failures (and that is precisely why Shenmue 3 was never made), please explain to me this expectation of wild success for eventual sequel or reboot.

It's not for me or you to define what they see as an appropriate level of demand. They specifically asked gamers to tweet them what games they wanted and they specifically said shenmue was one of the most demanded after they asked. That is a simple statement of fact of what happened and sure as hell outweighs what you've "seen"

Some people seem to forget one important thing: software is King.

Sure Sony MS and Nintendo want to sell you consoles. But it's also because after purshasing the console, you'll actually most likely buy games on those consoles. And they get royalties with that.

If you create a game that your most hardcore audience want, they will not only buy your console, but also: A)spread the world, increase your popularity around them B)probably buy games (your games, but also multiplatform games).

So yeah it makes sense and I'm just waiting to see who will be the smartest between Sony and MS to create a partnership first.

I love it when people bring up Shenmue's sales. It isn't even a fair comparison. DC was a very poor seller and at the time Shenmue 2 launched Xbox had an even smaller install base than DC. And non existant audience in Japan.

Shenmue 2 could have done better even if it was on the GC. Shenmue 2 should have been a multiplat and we would already have Shenmue 3.

For comparison to other DC titles . PSO didnt even break a million ,yet it has multiple sequels (which are also inferior in quality) selling buttloads more on PS2,PSP. Heck I think a PSO re-release on PSN,3DS or something would sell more than it did on the DC.

Yea Shenmue isnt a GTA which pushes hardware units. But it isnt a failure franchise that doesnt deserve a sequel.

Yep. Under all the crappy circumstances it still did well. The franchise was dealt a bad hand and got treated like absolute shit. It deserves a second chance.

I'm honestly not surprised there is interest in bringing Shenmue back after the huge wave of requests from vocal fans on the internet when both MS and Sony asked what games they wanted to see on their next gen platforms. Curious to see if this ends up being exclusive to either of them or multiplat.

I would not be surprised at all if a teaser is shown at Sony or MS's conference.

One ticket, please. :D

HD re-releases of I&II (retail/physical please!) or Shenmue 3 would both be great news and obligatory day 1 acquisitions.

Agreed.

Here's a present because your nickname inspired me.

Said it multiple times before: I will buy whichever next gen console gets Shenmue III or even a remastered Shenmue I and II. Doesn't matter if the game is 100, it will be mine!

If -and that is a skyscraper tall if- Shenmue is being worked on, I would expect it to come on the Xbox. The first two episodes were ported onto MS first console, and seing how desperate and agressive the company is with regards to fighting for the North American market, it would not shock me to learn they are financing the project...

same here. I'd buy anything and if it was multiplat id buy it on every platform.

Yuppp.. Platform matterd a lot. The time when PS1 and 2 dominated the market showed no mercy to exclusives of other platforms. Heck technically only a handful of Non-PS2 IPs survived apart from Nintendo,Halo..etc

RE4 would have been a considered a commercial failure if it just stuck with GCN.

Also any more room on that train. I dont mind standing by the door ;_;
