I am part of the problem when it comes to DLC but I rather this game didn't have any past maybe WII U DLC for the 3DS version (Character/Stuff not finished in time for the 3ds release but is ready for Wii U release).

So, this is a totally premature conversation, but...whatever! I need to kill time until the reveal trailer. Assuming that the leak pans out, which of the Smash sequels has had the best collection of newcomers? By best, I just mean has you the most hyped pre-release to try everyone out. A reminder list:
-
Melee
Bowser / Dr. Mario / Falco / Ganondorf / Ice Climbers / Marth / Mewtwo / Mr. Game & Watch / Peach / Pichu / Roy / Zelda (Sheik) / Young Link

Brawl
Diddy Kong / Ike / King Dedede / Lucario / Lucas / Meta Knight / Pikmin & Olimar / Pit / Pokemon Trainer / R.O.B. / Solid Snake / Sonic / Toon Link / Wario / Wolf / Zero Suit Samus

Smash 4
Chorus Kids / Chrom / Greninja / Little Mac / Mega Man / Mii Fighter / Pac-Man / Palutena / Rosalina & Luma / Shulk / Villager / Wii Fit Trainer
-
It's a really hard call for me. In the end, I think I have to go with Smash 4 because, while every game has had characters I was excited for, Smash 4 has the most that I can see myself maining (in this case, Greninja, Little Mac, and Mega Man).
Each game has upped the variety from the previous game.

So, how did everyone think of the Smash EVO tourney? I really enjoyed it myself even thought in the EVO thread was fill with "are they still playing" comments. :/

I agree the thread kinda sucked, but I still enjoyed it. Not the best tournament in the Summer of Smash(That's probably MLG or SKTAR for me), but Hbox and Axe seriously brought the hype, I loved their matches. PPMD's were great too, though I felt bad for Fly :p

Mango was a predictable winner, but damn did Hbox put up an amazing fight. Shut up the doubters. And Prog got a proper send off. And viewership rivaled last years.

If nothing else, I hope it shows that Smash is here to stay.

Smash 4 hands down. I need to play as Palutena and Rosalina. NEED.
Each game has upped the variety from the previous game.
Smash 4 hands down; everyone seems so unique so far.

Yeah, that's another thing. I feel like Smash 4 is the first Smash Bros. game where almost all of the expected characters have been picked, so they're able to choose more interesting and obscure examples. I know Rosalina and Palutena aren't obscure to us, but I have plenty of friends who didn't know who those people were. Hell, aside from Mega Man and Pac Man, I know people who haven't known any of the newcomers outside of "oh yeah, that guy from Punch-Out!!, right?"

Smash 4. Because Megaman. Sorry I'm biased :p

I don't follow the competitive scene but I was surprise to see a Young Link and Pikachu users doing so well. I thought they're both considered low tier fighters.

Oh man, how did I forget about that glorious Pikachu. Ending the set with a four stock in under a minute? Incredible.

Smash 4's newcomer list is great because Megaman, Pacman, Little Mac, Shulk, Palutena, Greninja and Rosalina are really great choices.

I really wonder what happens at Evo next year.

Evo would love to host the new game that doesn't need CRTs (and seems obsessive with running newer games in general), Nintendo will probably want to showcase their new game, and the community might even be willing to give Smash 4 a shot.

But Melee tho. I'd hate to see Melee ever not be there, and I have some doubts that Smash 4 will be as good for that type of play. Here's hoping it's actually great and makes it to Evo and makes Evo exciting. Best case scenario both games somehow make it, but I could see neither making it if the new game disappoints.

Re: character reveal.

I wish we didn't already know it was Shulk. I wish the leaks after the first one had never been shared. But I really can't complain about getting Shulk. Can't wait to see him in action.

If Nintendo continues to be an evo sponsor and puts up a decent size pot for the evo champion people will show up and play it regardless of how good or bad it is competitively

This.

I'd be fine with no DLC. Every single newcomer I've really wanted is in, most of the vets I want to return are, and this roster is already incredible... easily the best Smash roster ever, even without all the characters revealed yet.

The only characters I still need for this roster to be perfect for me are Ness, Ice Climbers, and Captain Falcon. Yeah, I had hopes for Dixie Kong and Krystal, but I can live without them.

SO hyped about this roster had about Shulk (probably) tomorrow!

Wait ... did I miss Shulk's "leak"? Wut happened?

Timeline of events

Gematsu 2nd leak said Shulk would be playable

The guy who voiced Shulk said he did some VA work for a game coming out this year but couldn't talk about it yet

Sakurai announced a newcomer would be revealed Monday, the director of the Xenoblade games retweeted this announcement, this has only happened when Xenoblade stuff has been announced or shown off

Gematsu leaker said Shulk would be revealed tomorrow

Pikachu is mid tier. Actually, I'm pretty sure he's the only character that's competitively viable in all three games. Axe is just extremely good with him and he makes him look top tier.

Armada is a Peach main. He uses Young Link against Jigglypuffs because the Peach/Jigglypuff matchup is the most boring and frustrating thing you'll ever see in your life, and Young Link vs Jigglypuff isn't actually that bad for Young Link.

But yes, it's great to see character diversity. It's not Fox only on Final Destination as some people continue to insist.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
It would be sick if the POTD tonight, if there is one, was just a random item or something relating to xenoblade

This is true. The game will get at least a year or two no matter what. But if one-on-ones remain as slow as the invitational finale than the rule set is going to have to be redone entirely to make it exciting and time effective, otherwise the viewership will drop off regardless of who plays. And it may die even if those changes are made if it's unbalanced or too slow.

The timer should very, very rarely be a factor in Smash.

Personally, I don't care if Smash 4 gets dropped if it doesn't work out, I just hope at that point they'd be bold enough to bring back Melee again. I don't want the smash series to ever disappear as an eSport force after all the work and the incredible base built by the Melee fanbase. Something needs to fill that slot or else it'll be a long ~5 year wait for Smash 5.

Did he ay anything else?

Smash 4 > Melee > Brawl

For some reason, Palutena's inclusion feels miles more surreal than the rest of the newcomers to me and I don't know why. Pac-Man and Little Mac were my two most wanted newcomers and after my initial excitement for them, it felt like they've always been in Smash. The same goes for the other newcomers. Palutena is a different story. She was an obvious choice, yet I'm still trying to wrap my head around her inclusion. I can't look at her trailer or screenshots and not go "Palutena is actually in Smash Bros." Maybe it's because she exudes such a godly aura. She looks really big, her design looks really intricate, and her attacks look really mystical and majestic. She's like a playable boss.

Ridley confirmed.

Really.

More than ever I want tomorrow's reveal to be ANYONE but Shulk. I love the idea of that guy being playable, but the sooner we can put Sal's "leaks" behind us the sooner the Smash community can become interesting again.
You're going to be mightily disappointed I'm afraid...

Funny how fickle this community can be. Seems like most have gone from hyped about Shulk over the last few months to "meh" almost overnight. Jesus.

I'm still excited for his reveal, even if we know it's him!

Yeah, it definitely takes a bit of wind out of my hype sails knowing it's him, but it's still exciting to see how he's implemented. And even in the Palutena trailer, where you knew it was for her immediately, it still gave me chills to see the "Palutena alights!" banner appear on the screen. Even if it's already expected, it's a whole different feeling when they're completely confirmed.

I would prefer Fiora/Melia to Shulk.

Actually any character fits the Smash. All have unique movesets to make them interesting in battle.

Though I really want it to be Riki, just because a Nopon will also be there in Xeno X, and he matches the cuteness of the other mascots
even if he's a 40-year old jobless father of 11 kids.
