This is what the BUK-M1 (aka SA-11) surface-to-air missile system looks like:

Similar missile system was spotted by AP journalists earlier today:

Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday. The Buk missile system can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

Debris field is up to 15,000km wide.

All evidence is pointing to a catastrophic mid-air failure... make of that what you will.

This is heartbreaking and could be a very bad sign of things to come. I really hope cooler heads persevere in this kind of situation.

However, I cannot possibly begin to imagine why they would plot their course anywhere remotely close to what was an active bees nest. It just seems way too dangerous. :(

Forgive my ignorance, I know nothing in regards to stock or financial markets.

Why does something like this cause the stock market to plummet? Is Malaysia Airlines even registered on the Dow Jones? Is it the fear of war or something?

The worst thing for markets is uncertainty.

Shooting down a 777 is what I would categorize as creating a level of uncertainty.

The market didn't plummet. That movement is well with in the average daily variance.

Machines reading the news interpret it as bearish and immediately trigger sells. Then after the news digests it starts getting bought up again, possibly by competing trading systems.

Lmao

People still trying to deny Russian involvement in this fiasco are deluding themselves.

I'm not trying to deny Russian involvement. I'm trying to be reasonable. I'm not going to jump to conclusions without any facts. That's dangerous, especially with a situation like this. I think it's prudent that we wait for more information. I'm just being devil's advocate.

I'm fearing there are gonna be pictures I don't want to see on social media...

RIP to those who died. Such unnecessary suffering

I guess it would have broken up immediately upon getting hit :(. Small consolation, but they were probably all unconscious due to explosive depressurization. I wouldn't be able to bear the thought of spending my last minute of life in terror while plunging towards the ground.

Not yet. Need an unbiased source. Got to think they'll be able to confirm if it was a missile soon.

This will be confirmed as soon if they found traces of explosive on wreckage . Also missile strike would create different damage pattern compared to bomb explosion.

Ukrainian separatists supported by Russia shot it down, technically they're Ukranian but want to be part of Russia. Russia gave them some soviet era buks and this is one of the things they did. Russia denied involvement because they didn't directly do it but the separatists claimed responsibility of shooting down what they thought was a Ukranian AN-26 which turned out to be the passenger airliner. When they shot it down they still didn't care because they said it was in their airspace, which is like me standing outside my home and posting on twitter that you can't fly above my house or I'm going to shoot you with my buk

They denied involved with the military plane. Can we please stop posting out of our asses?

I was very confused at first because there were 2 stories on the NYTimes.

One about a missing Malaysian passenger jet and one about the Russians shooting down a Ukranian fighter jet.

so right now we think the passenger jet was SHOT down??

Technically it could've broken up in mid-air? Didn't that happen not so long ago as well?

Probably still shot down yes, right after a Ukranian jet was shot down by a Russian jet. Both could've done it.

You don't get that huge of a debris field by just a normal crash. I can't even think of a situation where it would break up in mid-flight like it did and fall around that huge area.

It got shot down, Ukraine confirmed it and everyone is acting like it was shot down.

Holy shit.

My sister only 2 weeks ago boarded a similar flight with Malaysian Airlines from KL to London instead of Amsterdam. Both flight paths fly over the Ukraine. Very scary. :/

RIP to all those involved.

Wonder where Girkin got all those modern SAM systems. From Santa?

It will take weeks / months to answer this question. It's an illusion to think that Russia supports this evilness. The worst part is that people abuse these victims for their own crusade.

RIP.

If it was the rebels, then they have truly fucked up. Where do rebels get something like this? We all know the answer. I wonder if the dutch will spearhead the investigation.

Those poor, innocent people.

Knee jerk reaction to escalating world events that could impact the world economy basically.

If you are squeamish, I would recommend not looking on Twitter/Facebook for a while. I can see photos making the rounds and people posting them without thinking.

None, but its sort of logic. If a plane is shot 33,000 feet in the air. Certainly it will break up as it falls to the ground. There will be a clear trace of smoke in the air. This videos does not show it. Maybe there is more. I don't know.

I'm keeping an open mind here.

Your logic is based on one video, one camera angle, and not necessarily where the plane was hit, but where the plane crashed.
