Divinity: Original Sin News: Game has now sold 250k units; broke even

Pardon my ignorance, but wasn't there a Kickstarter for the game that raised almost a million bucks? Did the company still have to sell 250k copies to break even?

The kickstarter was to get additional money to add additional features to the game, the game had outside funding besides the kickstarter.

Yes, Divinity: Original Sin is a Kickstarter game. But that money was for the tail-end of development - the stretch goals, bug fixing, and polishing, not the entire game.

Larian actually went into their own funds (that were reserved for their next game) to finish development on DOS, from what I recall. In the end they only had enough money for two ads.

As to the specifics of what they need to sell to break even, I don't know.

If you have any kind of life to live over the weekend, I recommend playing something less black hole like.
It fucked me over pretty bad. Been a long time since a game made me play it overnight. Twice. Luckily my boss is cool.

Bought it last week, just started my playthrough a couple hours ago.

Should I bump the difficulty up to hard? Normal seems fairly easy so far.

Depends how much talking and exploring and loot luck you had IMO. If you are 6 and it's still easy you can bump it up. Fights are pretty good on difficulty IMO, but I reset and do preflight planning and buffs and if a person dies (Need DAT Exp)

It's generally me. I think that D:OS was the first game I spent more than $15 for in at least a year. Got it for what it was during the Steam sale, $33 or whatever. Generally speaking, with the quality and quantity of both games and sales, there's hardly ever a reason, let alone time, to buy a game at full price. It isn't being cheap, just practical.

That being said, D:OS was the best gaming money I've spent in years. I was hesitant to pick it up during the summer sale just because of what else I could've gotten for that much money (I think I was eyeing Broforce, Volgarr, Mercenary Kings, and one other I can't remember for less combined than D:OS), but it was totally worth it.

Which is fine, I'm waiting to buy it the next time it goes on sale as well. I guess what I was trying to say is that often times people will make drive by "waiting for 75-90%" posts when talking about steam games.

Can anyone give a brief summary what the linked article in the OP says in english?

What level are you?

Game ramps up around level 5-6, but depends which order you tackle the content. If you're finding it too easy, explore a little bit...

Steam has clocked 72 hours and I still haven't finished the game.
Damn this has been one of the best experience I've had in gaming since The Witcher 1&2.

It's a crying shame that the mainstream media hasn't picked up on this one.

Someone checked metacritic the other day and there were only a few official reviews.

I'm a little surprised that they've only broken even so far. Seems like it's been on top of Steam for a while since launch.
It's the best CRPG I've played in a very long time, so I hope it does better.

Agreed, 250k and barely broke even is pretty crazy but I'm glad they got to that. Now at least they'll continue to have a steady trickle of sales and spikes every discount sale.

I hope they find a way to make it work on consoles. The PC users that already know how great the game is can hype it for them. I personally wouldn't want to play it on console but whatever.

To be perfectly honest, people that are yet to play the game will likely have a better experience than us: more patches included, unique companions, proper backstabbing, etc. at a lower price with DLCs included.

On the other hand, it's the perfect game to have right now, during the summer release drought.

I will buy this when they release a bundle with DLC...and that is 75% off.

Breaking even after 2.5 weeks on a game with such production values sounds fantastic to me when you put it into perspective that a lot of AAA projects don't seem to achieve profitability after several months (or almost an year in the case of Tomb Raider). And this is a case of profitability when the momentum is actually starting. Like the guy said, the sales curve is still rising. I'm surprised it broke even in the first place TBH. :p

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I was responsible for at least 5 of those sales.

Such a great game.

Fucking amazing game honestly. I don't even really like this genre all that much, but man does D:OS hit all the right spots.

Is the cloud saving broken? I'm having to transfer my save back and forth between my desktop and laptop. In the properties, it used to show 0/100mb for cloud saves and now I don't see it.

A lot of the press has been talking about it, but the game is at least 50 hrs long and no one got review codes prior to release. The game does have a few obscure/difficult sections, and there isn't much in the way of help online either.

Cloud saving is disabled right now because of the save's filesizes - they used to be much larger, apparently too large for Steam cloud. Larian have since compressed the saves, and I think it's only a matter of time before they re-enable cloud saving for the game.

I'm about 6 hours in, and I'm finding DOS to be a very good game--not a great one. The character development systems feel poorly balanced, the conversation system is dumb, the simulation aspects are often inconsistent, the story is mediocre, and the wacky, "anything goes" writing style and setting aren't as interesting as I was hoping. I'm playing Icewind Dale concurrently, and despite that game's age, it's actually competing quite well for my time.

I don't want to sound too negative. The game has some great strengths as well, and I'm very glad it's commercially successful. Barring a significant upswing in quality (which is very possible), my prediction is that DOS isn't going to be the best RPG this year. It might not even be second or third best.

Pillars of Eternity is still planned for this year :)

I like Divinity but its far away from my favorite rpgs like Baldurs Gate 2 or Gothic1/2.

Now I'm curious, what releases could possibly cut it down? I don't know much about Pillars of Eternity or Wasteland 2, so I'll believe those possibilities, but I can't think of anything else. Looking at Durante's list, I can only presume you mean Dragon Age: Inquisition as the third (or maybe Age of Decadence).

If you expect anything more than mediocrity from DAI, I humbly ask you to seek help immediately. If it's Age of Decadence, I'll accept the possibility.

But in all cases, I doubt any of them can match the sheer imagination Divinity: Original Sin has unleashed in regards to its gameplay and design. It's a really refreshing game to play, and I (unfortunately) doubt that anyone else will match its ingenuity for some time.

You listed the exact three I was thinking of. I'm not sure about Wasteland 2--impressions seem to be mostly positive, but not stellar--but I've been following Pillars of Eternity's development obsessively, and I'm confident it's going to be incredible.

I've played the Age of Decadence Early Access version quite a bit. The game's definitely not going to be for everyone, but it puts DOS's openness and choice & consequence to shame. Sure, the graphics suck in comparison, and the combat isn't very colourful or varied, but AoD is like no other RPG in existence. It's going to generate a small but extremely devoted fanbase.

DAI should have some nice production values.

Nice. I hope this shows a CLEAR message to all the publishers that denied them their vision with the statement "lol cRPGs are dead". I hope we'll see more A / B budget games like this in the future. Along with NieR and other games, they quickly become my favorite type of games, since they can actually RISK something and try something different and new, unlike AAA budget games that NEED to appeal to such a broad audience to break even (see Tomb Raider), so they become a terrible stale, lackluster and streamlined "experience" that bores the crap outta me.

Also, good for Larian! Hope their next endeavor will have a nice financial basis, so they won't need a publisher again. Been a huge fan of all their games so far.
