Destiny, how good is it really?

We've barely got a snippet of it in the beta and the game is damn good. But honestly, tell me any other shooter out there that is better and that will have the longevity of Destiny?
Hardline? Please. COD?

Well to be fair, COD always lasts a year... It's never dead. You can always jump into a game in any game mode. The population does get divided at DLC mappack time, but yeah it does always last a whole year. So for 60$ that's not bad.

I'm sure I read something about TF having trouble finding enough players for campaign mode? Or other game modes not having enough people? ( I could be wrong )

For me from the beta..

PvE was very good. But I think that you will need to play co-op 100% of the time to get the full enjoyment.

PvP I did not like. Made even worse by P2P. But being from Europe, and knowing just how many fucks bungie give for non north american players, I will avoid this game.

In case people are not sure of my statement.. This game like every other bungie game will give host automatically to north american players, and the middle finger to everyone else. A prime example of how much bungie thinks of the rest of the world would be the iron banner... That started at 23.30h CET !!! No fucks were given for non north Americans.

It is a shame because if the multi matched the campaign, I would be all over this

You are talking shit mate. The EU and us servers are separate for a start.

Also when playing the PvP, the game felt like it ran on a dedicate server rather than p2p. Also when that iron banner was going on everybody was lagging due to player overload not the host having a crap connection.

I loved it so much I'm paying a ridiculous £150 for the plastic tat edition.

No I'm not joking.

Really.

I've been watching gameplay footage since they released any and honestly...
The game looks ok. Looks like something I'll play for 20 hours and then drop.
But everyone is talking about it like it's the GOTG (or cross gen... when will they stop this!)
To the people who got to play it. Is it really that good? How long do you think it'll last?
I mean Titanfall was also praised and hyped... The game got forgotten so quick.
I remember my facebook feed being flooded with people saying that titanfall was the ultimate experience and that all other console FPS' would never dent it. Now, we never even talk about Titanfall anymoe except to crack jokes about it.

Will Destiny be the same? Does anyone else doubt it's greatness? Am I being silly and should I just wait for the game to come out and be completely amazed? Or what?

Hmmm
For me, the gameplay in Destiny feels really good. The shooting just has a great feel to it. Titanfall felt kind of crappy, reminded me of CoD gunplay, just not fun at all, so for gameplay alone I think it will be a real good game.
But the supposed lack of content is kind of worrying. Depending on how that plays out, it may not last too long.

Yes, I'm playing from Asia. If they have a server in at America I will be completely unable to play.

PVP connection was pretty bad in the beta. Inconsistent, I couldn't get a feel for TTK for muscle memory, well, not one I could rely on conistently enough.

Isn't it p2p conneciton? Late night games were worse for me.

We've had this thread a million times already but here we go anyway.

Personally I though the gameplay in the beta ranged from okay to downright boring. The core gameplay feels pretty good from a PvE perspective and running around killing enemies is pretty fun. However that was all there was to it. The missions just funnelled you along corridors filled with enemies to small outdoor spaces filled with enemies with the occassional wave defense where you stood still and killed loads of enemies. There was also the occsssional boss fight like in the strike. However they were so archaic in design that they were mind numbingly dull. They essentially ammounted to shooting the boss as much as you can whilst dodging its attacks and dealing with waves of enemies it throws at you. Now lots of sp games are just like this. However the good ones have an interesting story to hold it together and cool set pieces to mix up the gameplay. Destiny had neither of these. The story was non existant and the places looked pretty but offered no way of making the shooting more interesting. The encounter design was so ridiculously average. Considering they came from the Halo series to make this is shocking. Basically the missions were nothing more than elongated grinds.

As for explore, initially it seems great. You have this large area to explore. You have this awesome bike which you can summon at any time. However you very quickly realise that world is actually very boring and lifeless. It looks pretty but it's completely empty. There is no point in exploring other than to see pretty sights. The enemies you encounter in explore always the same and always spawn in the exact same spot. So after fighting them more than twice you're already bored. And you will fight them many many times because the spawn rate is ridiculous. The enemies are also locked to their spawns and can't move away. Meaning you can pick them off from a distance and they won't respond. The world just feels so barren and lifeless that I couldn't force myself to explore for more than an hour. Which is a shame because the world looks so cool and there were so many interesting things they could have done.

I'm not going to bother going in depth about the PvP however its obvious that Reach (the worst of Halo's multiplayers) was a test bed for the shittiness that is Destiny's PvP. Yet even with all the feedback about how armour abilities suck, and how bloom is awful etc they still went ahead and took all the crap from Reach and made it play an even bigger role in destiny. They disregarded the good stuff and kept the bad.

As you can see I didn't like the Destiny beta. Maybe the retail game will be better however I have very little hope that it will. Which is a shame because I really wanted to love Destiny. Bungie created my favourite series of all time with Halo, it's a shame that I really don't like their next ip.

I don't know whether it's p2p or dedicated, however I know that 100% of the time the game lagged like crap. I can't have finished more than 25% of my matches because the game would kick me and most shots took a noticeable amount of time to register.

I know this is a beta so it's expected however it definitely didn't hold up well. Even early in the morning it was bad for me.

Exactly. Beta is beta, so I didn't mind. I just hope it's better in retail. I need to be able to assign TTK to muscle memory to kill and move on in a reliable way or the game just feels awkward.

I enjoyed what I played. I liked the Halo series a lot and there's definitely a bit of a Halo feel in the core gameplay. Not surprising from Bungie.

Plus the loot collecting was very addictive even in just a Beta version.

But, there's still a major issue with this game. The near complete lack of Social and Community Features in the game.

This whole issue with Raids would be nearly non-existent if we had basic chat options. When I mean basic, I mean stuff we've had for the most bare bone of MP games.

The worst way I can explain the Tower hub is that it's the equivalent of Playstation Home with even less social interaction or options. Go there, get your cutscene or buy your crap and get out.

It should be a Social Hub! It's where you should go to interact with other players, meet new friends, set up Fireteams for Crucible, Strikes, Raids and so on.

You should be able to chat with players in the Crucible, actually communicate with the team you're playing with for gods sake. This is going to be critical in something like The Iron Banner when people start getting decent gear.

Yeah there's going to be "trolls" every now and again but Bungie, instead of adding ways to filter out those players by giving us Mute options, the option to disable hearing chat completely for some alone game time and so on, are just going way too heavy handed and removing the feature. A basic, fundamental feature of all MP games.

Right now we're a bunch of mimes waving and dancing at each other desperate to actually interact with each in what is meant to be a social game without social features.

With games like Titanfall, Watch Dogs and now Destiny, its not good enough to be "good enough".

There is a expectation to be truly great, to set new trends, that expectation is not the audience fault, publishers with their marketing obviously want you to believe all that. Fail that, and you become as Brad Pitt in Seven said "fucking T shirt of the week, at best".

I enjoyed Destiny's gunplay, i also enjoyed Titanfall's gameplay.

Whether Destiny has the content to keep me playing is anyone's guess.

The game felt small from what I got in the beta but again that's a beta. Honestly wait till the game released as we barely have any info on the game outside of beta. I don't even think the raid leader confirmed how many raids there are in the interview recently.

The shooting feels really good, but everything else feels like nothing special. I don't get the hype either. I also really don't get what's so ambitious about it. There isn't anything in this game I haven't seen in any other game.

I played the beta and enjoyed it well enough to pre-order the game, but I doubt this will blow me away.

Yes Destiny will be the same.
People who stop playing Destiny will joke about how no one plays or talks about Destiny any more, ignoring those who do still play and talk about Destiny.

Titanfall was forgotten due to a lack of content.

Destiny seems to have a lot of content. I never played Destiny before, but im sure its legs are longer than Titanfall.

We've barely got a snippet of it in the beta and the game is damn good. But honestly, tell me any other shooter out there that is better and that will have the longevity of Destiny?
Hardline? Please. COD? Come on. I love the RPG elements and the MMOish style world. For me, this is the perfect blend of a shooter I've always wanted. You can say it was boring and all, but your judging that from a beta. Of course Bungie ain't gonna release all the marbles. Sure there were some negatives of the beta. Like the sometimes empty and small world. The bullet sponge like enemies. Maybe the MP isn't for you. But that's why there's also a load of content on the PVE side and 3 other worlds for us to explore, including locked locations of Old Russia. And for those who hate the always online like aspect, well that's the evolution of video games. If you hate it, well you might as well quit video gaming and stick with the classics of the N64 and 360 era or learn to not be such a hermit.

Destiny will be The greatest game ever made - Easily over 3000 hours worth of gameplay. 1000 hours per class.

Does destiny have a lot of content? I thought we just heard one section per world which would make it fairly smallish with a bit of grinding.

At least do some fucking research or reading before asking such a question. We don't know for certain because the game doesn't come out until September 9th. Holy fkn shit.

We should aggregate all the destiny threads and judge how good they are based on the title and then create a thread asking if the thread was any good.

Seriously though it was an open beta for a couple days.

It's easier to ask strangers than just play for yourself

Or rent it

Or buy it and trade it in

Or buy it and sell it to a friend

Or borrow it from a friend

Nah will just ask GAF instead.

Solid if unspectacular. It seems a solid shooter but I have concerns over the difficulty as the AI certainly didn't seem very smart.

It's definitely not the massive event/turning point it was hyped as, it's a decent shooter and looks about it imo.

This only started to happen as more and more people joined the beta. There was no host Advantage during PvP.

People are still playing Titanfall. I was playing this weekend on X1, it's just gone off the radar of the console warriors as it's no longer seen as a 'threat'.

Yea, I'm, always surprised when people talk like Titanfall went and died right out of the gate. It's continuously been amongst the most played games of my friends lists (and no I don't have a friends lists built up of people I met playing Titanfall, I rarely play it myself and am still Gen 1).

WP_20140802_15_13_26_Pro-Gus-PC_zpsa1b0720c.jpg

I don't think I've ever once seen either Call of Duty or BF4 appear above Titanfall in my "Popular with friends" since its launch.

As for Destiny, I personally didn't think much of it at all. I found the world to be dull, the encounters to be repetitive, and the sense of progression to be harmed significantly by the endlessly repopulating enemies. It did a terrible job of convincing me that this was a real place, because I could pretty much see the game loop logic at work at all times.

Plenty of others seem to like it though, so you'd probably need to try it out for yourself to get a better idea if it's for you or not.

Well they are still working on Titanfall,I just booted it up and played a few rounds yesterday and there was new content as far as gameplay mode and burn card stuff etc. Frame rate got down to some awful stuff as it dropped to like <5 fps stuff with all the action going on.

This sums it up nicely for me.

Before the beta I had no interest in Destiny, though I will admit I was mildly intrigued by it's premise. Unfortunately the beta did little to pull me in.

In my opinion Bungie have never been particularly good storytellers and the core gameplay loop they've been replicating for years has lost all it's vigour.

I can see it becoming a huge title over the next few years, but I won't be part of it.

Destiny Beta was a disappointment for me on both PS4 and Xbone, it doesn't deserve the hype.

what a silly comment. Just because you don't enjoy something doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the hype. Most of the hype was born from people trying and enjoying the game. Doesn't guarantee its something everyone will like but its hype seems born more from a good place

I had watched 2 hours of gameplay before I played the Beta for myself. I thought it looked like Borderlands with less variety, didn't even imagine myself playing it when it came out. Then there was a thread on here with people giving away Beta codes and I happened to have some free time so decided I'd at least try it. It all clicked for me the moment I got the first gun in the game, this game isn't Borderlands.

It's difficult to judge from just watching video, but the game is a pleasure to play. Everything feels tight, punchy, nothing like an MMO -- and yet it's also got a ton of MMO elements, things no other shooter has ever done. I played for at least 50 hours, about 20 of them being multiplayer, and the simple act of shooting a gun never got boring. I'd jump into the open world just to shoot things, for no other reason than the fact it felt satisfying to do.

The movement as well, double jumping and the air control, grenade throwing, melee, it all feels enjoyable to just play around with. The sound plays a big part in why everything feels as good as it does. The one sound that really stood out to me was hopping into a turret. These aren't the kind of things I would ever notice in other games, but for some reason Destiny makes you pay attention to the little details, and they're all done well.

People played the Beta and could only go up towards Level 8 and the majority absolutely loved it. Dozens of hours have been poured into the beta by a lot of people, something that only a few beta's managed to do. Just imagine how much more hours people can and will spend into Destiny when the final game releases in September. I'd say that if you have 30+ hours at minimum poured into this game before you call it quits, it is already going a huge succes.

There is always a certain max. for gamers out there who will eventually get bored after a couple of hours. OP. Ask yourself this; Are you really the type of gamer who does not get grabbed by the atmosphere of the game? The perfect art direction and the smooth Halo shooter gameplay with added leveling and gear looting? Do not ignore the online aspect of this game, unless you do not have a stable internet connection. There are going to be a myriad of options for you to choose from.

If you hate PvP then just ignore those and do co-op raids or strikes. Cruise around the place and make up your own story with a bunch of GAF-buddies. Dance and have fun!

That's a really denigrating and asinine thing to say. Those of us who don't think that Destiny is particularly great do not hold that opinion because we're easily bored, unable to truly get into a game or because we just don't get it. Many of us have perfectly valid reasons, and we've articulated them several times already.

Really now? I just gave the OP a friendly advice as to not give up on the game just by watching a few videos. Not my problem that you feel attacked by a generous opinion from me.

Jesus. Some of you guys just need to chill. It is not like I am calling the OP a person with a short attention span.

I don't know about the retail release, but the beta was a ton of fun. Really enjoyed what I was able to play. I can't wait to go back to the moon and to make my warlock into a legend

Judging from the beta it's more entertaining and interesting then most shooters that have come out over the past 10 years or so.

What are you going on about? The guy in the OP didn't even get to play the beta. He has no idea what opinion he holds on the game, or if he would get bored with it if he played it. He was judging off videos he watched and is asking people who played it what they think of it. He hasn't articulated anything because he doesn't have the experience of playing the game to have anything to articulate about.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Its great but nothing revolutionary but definitely different than generic shooters. Makes you want to come back more frequently to play. The release date for this game is just too good. I am sure Bungie will pull record sales.

Titanfall is an online arena FPS, while Destiny is an MMOFPS. (you can also go in third person view, though) A major distinction should be made there. You can do much more in the latter.

I played the Alpha/BETA longer than you claim you'll play the entire game. Maybe play the game instead of watching it. A lot of games look less inspired than they play, especially games with lots of progression, loot etc.
