Hitbox.tv | Switch from Twitch

Totally. I'm still excited for the site and all, just a little thing I had a problem with. But if the site becomes more popular, I hope those kinds of things get ironed out.

The rest of my experience was great though -- the other staff members were nice and answered questions. I definitely don't mean to make the whole site look bad.

Well, that's what you just did though. Expect a Kotaku article within the hour.

So, anybody else think that Cosmo is going to spearhead a mass exodus from Twitch to Hitbox soon? Or am I the only one?

I hope it happens, actually

He's been posting about it and seems curious for sure. He said he's considering leaving Twitch. Maybe he'll do some sort of test stream and see how it goes.

Here I thought it was just the music issue but no... there's something more serious. Twitch is also getting rid of past broadcasts and they can no longer be saved forever? Welp... here I go making 2 hour chunk highlights for all my streaming broadcasts... this'll take awhile.

Sad times we're in.

A staff member used the word faggot in a chat not too long ago. Yuck. Hope that's not representative of the rest of the staff.

EDIT: For context:

A streamer's friend called the staff faggots for some reason. A staff member wrote in chat something like, "You should switch to hitbox because of [benefit], [benefit], and we're not faggots like your friend said."

Just kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

A GAFfer just used the word faggot in his post. I hope that's not representative of the rest of the members.

Got what I thought was a stable stream going this morning, but it didn't save it at the end. I thought I'd set it up to do so, but I guess not? Still learning, but at least it's fun.

You have to enable it on the dashboard for now but it holds your preference there.

If Cosmo leaves Twitch, all speedrunners will follow.

At that point, I wouldn't be surprised if the FGC follows as well.

Don't know how the esports community is reacting to this.

I never read anything about Twitch getting rid of past broadcasts.

Does Hithox automatically save past broadcasts?

Hitbox sounds so tempting to switch however the audience at the moment is currently at Twitch. Even when you spread the numbers it's at what: 10000 to 1 per viewers in terms of Twitch vs Hitbox?

I can see the clear benefits of the up and comer Hitbox but that's like saying you're going to get a huge viewership on Vimeo instead of Youtube. Yes, there are downsides but in the end the audience will not move over in a mass exodus... at least not any time soon.

Let's see if the changes make affect how people stream and archive their VOD's.

They are going to only be keeping VODs for a few weeks from now on, and will start to delete old videos in 3 weeks time. Highlights will be kept for eternity.

If it affects them then they will leave. But don't you think that Twitch might make exceptions for some of these HUGE streamers? I would assume so.

And just because someone leaves doesn't mean all will depart. That just means the next speedrunner down will get a larger audience from the departure of the former.

I love hitbox. Sure, the audience isn't there, but with the changes to twitch it might cause a shift (like digg->reddit). Hitbox is way more responsive in terms of stream lag as well.

Did you guys even read my other post? It's not that he simply used the word faggot, it's that he used it in a negative way. As if its connotations were something to run away from.

Surely you recognize the difference between an employee of a company and a poster on a forum. He represents his company and follows their guidelines. He should be an example. I'm not being paid to post here, and I don't represent the site in any way. (PM me anytime EviLore and we can talk.)

I explained my stance. If you choose to mock me instead of arguing with that, go for it.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss this further. I don't want to harp on it in this thread anymore.

SHOTS FIRED!

Hitbox said:
It’s sad to see someone lose touch with the very people that made them big. Forcing a 30+ second delay on streamers and ruining their VoD’s with automated copyright claims is a slap in the face of everyone who tries to share their passion for gaming with the world.

Luckily we all have a voice and can make ourselves heard. We did it by creating a platform that is deeply rooted within the community, you can do it by joining us.
At hitbox you’re always with friends, and the soundtrack is whatever you want it to be.

hitbox is

Fast
Our streams run on technology that allows for a delay as low as two seconds. So, if you are looking for true live interaction with your viewers, you’re in the right place! No matter how many streamers are on and no matter how many people are watching, this will not change.

Our technology isn’t the only thing fast here, either. We have a dedicated support team, ready to answer your questions and help when it’s needed.

Advanced
We built our chat from the ground up on the newest technology available. Not only is it the most stable in the industry, it is more responsive and allows for a greater level of interaction. It has features like sticky messages, possibility to post videos and gifs, a full fletched polling system and a very handy raffle system built right into it.

Focused
Our main focus is, and will always be, YOU, our community. Every existing or new feature is built with your needs and wishes in mind. This is also why features like VoDs are public. No need to pay for full access and no automated copyright protection muting your memories. We have integrated YouTube functionality and allow downloading recordings as video files.

One click and you’re ready to go.

Ready
We have been working on this platform for over a year now. Our infrastructure spans the globe and all the main functions are up and running smoothly.

We are strong and here to stay.

So what are you waiting for? Time to Switch!

Haha. They sure are enjoying the spotlights. I hope they will be able to handle the incoming surge of new members because it looks promising.

How does the ad system work? I haven't had time to watch much the streams, but I've already seen multiple 30-second clips. Is it just because I watched partnered streams with monetization enabled? Do streams from non-partners have less ads?

Xion_Stellar

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Well I haven't done any serious streaming yet just some test here and there on Twitch but I already decided that if I ever decided yo get serious about streaming it will be on Hitbox.tv

Yeah wait until they see Twitch levels of traffic and have to scale way up... and get the attention of major music labels, etc.

Everyone is ignoring that Twitch does have reasons to do many of the things they've done over the last year. Otherwise, why would they do it? ContenID in particular.. costs them loads of money to do it...

Same with Google and YouTube. YouTube was losing tons of money and embroiling Google in lawsuits (some they won, but still costly).. and Google found themselves with content that appealed to advertisers for the very companies that cared about the potential copyright violations of the content.

The same is true of video game streaming. What are the crossover industries? Music, movies, etc. Entertainment industry likes to advertise over entertainment, and they care about copyrights.

Something like Hitbox.tv could end up being slapped with a bunch of lawsuits and shutting down, then where are you left?

And you think this site will have no delay in streaming if their traffic gets too high?

Just playing a bit of devil's advocate here... I think people expect unrealistic things from internet services. They often start off by losing loads of money and have to figure out how to profit eventually. And consumers couldn't be much more hostile about it.

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Is there a limit on how high they allow users to set their upload bitrate? I have 20MB Up and what to use ALL of it if possible.

THIS. Twitch is self-policing to cut down costs since they have been growing exponentially in such a short time. The Google acquisition might have not happened for all we know, but I'm sure they will definitely get some more money from another source soon. They are streamlining, and of course cutting services back that are FREE to give themselves some wiggle room. They can't make money by continually saving and hosting thousands, if not, millions of hours of on demand video for free (most of which is not even from partners or good streamers).

As for the content ID issue, there probably have been lots of behind the scenes problems with labels and publishers who want a slice of the pie. Maybe they should strike a deal with these publishers to make sure they are getting something for people playing their products on air. Streaming is such a legal grey area and Twitch has gotten too big for its own good in such a fast time. This is to cover their butts in case something huge happens I'm assuming, or for any potential buyers who don't want to acquire a legal mess.

If hitbox makes it big in the next couple years, I'll look forward to the sequel to this thread complaining about all of it's new content ID/storage policies as well.

This is just the reality of the business, you either are going to be moving around a lot to outrun the big companies wanting their (fair) share of the pie, or you find the service that offers you the best compromise between quality/service/audience/etc.

Does hitbox have 60fps support? I know twitch does actually. I was very surprised to see that. (I streamed 1280x720 at 60fps just to test it out, not for normal streaming).

Also that forced ads, yeah, I guess hitbox gotta get something for their servers. I just think there are better ways around it.

Can anyone that's got a dedicated youtube user base comment on your experience drawing viewers to Twitch vs Hitbox? I have 6000 subs on Youtube, about 300 views on an average video on a week (subs really don't mean much anymore), and a paltry 100 followers on Twitch. I haaate switching platforms and it seems drawing people from one site to another has a pathetically low conversion rate. Couple this with Twitch having low discoverability for small channels and it's been very frustrating.

If I try to move to Hitbox is it going to be the same except even worse because less people have hitbox accounts? I'm not attached to twitch, but rebuilding my viewer base is tiresome and if in general people are less willing to hop from Youtube to Hitbox that'd be interesting to know.

I do think the lack of stream lag will be a big plus though. It was a big factor in why I took an extremely long hiatus from streaming on Twitch. Any chat interaction had to be ancillary to what's currently happening in-game.

Didn't look like there was a NeoGAF team so I went ahead and made one. If you want to join, just reply to this post with your Hitbox username.

http://www.hitbox.tv/team/neogaf

You're not allowed to make a team that uses the name neogaf, simply because of the chance of generating revenue while using that name. This is coming from someone who's been in contact with Bishoptl regarding a possible Twitch team ;)

Oh crap, I did not know that. I'll definitely be changing that then. Is it the name "NeoGAF" or anything that's similar or tied to this website? What about something like GAF Hitbox Team?

Jim Sterling is streaming Dynasty Warriors on Hitbox right now. Made some comments about feeling uneasy that Google has such a large grasp on both pre-recorded media and game streaming.

FGC is a tricky one. Big events will probably stay. Not sure if regulars will want to stream on Hitbox when Evo, Capcomfighters etc will 95% probably be on Twitch.

I'm guessing anything that implies Neogaf, which means GAF as well ;)
