Maturity, bitches.
Well to time in with the release and Shulk's reveal:

"Now it's launch time"

Not the most creative I know.

Then again I though "your favourite character is cut" was being saved for around now.

Oh no, I'm title talking. I better stop.

I'd say they take away from themselves. Imagine if Ganondorf wasn't in Melee, but was instead added in Brawl. He would probably be a much better character.

EDIT: All of Samus's alts are based on Other M? That really sucks.

See, Ganondorf is the only clone I can think of that really is affected that way. Most other clones (I'm thinking Doc, Pichu, Young Link, Dark Pit, and Lucina) probably wouldn't have made it in except as clones. One could make an argument that Lucas and Wolf also suffer similarly to Ganondorf, but I don't know enough about them to make that argument.

Most clones fairly low effort additions which allow some people to play as their favorite characters. Like, for me, I barely bothered with Marth in Melee or Brawl, but I have a feeling I'll be playing as Lucina a ton.

Dark Pit is great in KI:U because while Pit is innocent and gets harassed verbally constantly by anyone, Dark Pit is all gloom, sarcastic and is a free spirit that does not support any group in particular. He can be your enemy, then your ally, then after being absent for several chapters he appears out of nowhere and beats a boss for you, rescues you with the Lightning Chariot and isn't phazed by the bad guys banter like Pit does.
A lot of people make the mistake of him being an edgy, poochie style character just by looking at him, when he's actually the straight man of the whole cast lol.

To be fair, watching an LP isn't the same experience as playing a game and the affinity you develop for characters when playing alongside them and against them is different than the passive experience of watching an LP. You're right that Smash, esp. this one as far as we know, is not big on story per se, but given the plethora of additional background information we can expect from trophies and the like, you still can develop an appreciation for characters you're not familiar with and get a good sense of them. I see no concrete evidence at this point that Dark Pit won't have his own unique moveset, given all of the different kinds of weapons available in KI:U.

I'm sure he'll at least have a few unique moves otherwise him taking up anything other than an alt costume slot really is pointless.

If Dark Pit had a unique moveset, I'd hate his inclusion even more. If he's a clone or Brawl's Pit, then he's still a dumb inclusion, but at least bearable and a bit understandable. So either way, I'm not gonna like him.

I have to have someone to take my rage out on after seemingly losing two of my favorite characters to play in Smash. Imma keep punchin his face.

And not Lucina or Dr. Mario? Kept raging about characters wouldn't bringing your Snake back.

Wolf was a unique moveset, though. If Dark Pit had that many new moves and animations, he'd be a completely unique newcomer, not a clone at all. In which case, his clause of hatred would apply.

Wolf, for all intents and purposes, is a "Dark Fox", at least as much as Dark Pit is. They're both rival characters with their own personalities and visual similarities.

Wolf had different moves, but they were all based in Fox's original moveset. I forsee Dark Pit being similar, but like I said, we really don't know anything yet. Clearly there must be some reasonable difference to make him is own character instead of an alt costume for Pit. It's not the same as Lucina who looks completely different than Marth. (for the most part)

Would Dark Pit be my choice over an endless supply of other original characters, including Snake? Absolutely not. I'm not even really excited for his inclusion myself. However, a lot of the weird random hate for him here when he fits the description of other, beloved characters, makes no sense to me. He's just the one we know the least about so he's the punching bag for those that lost their favorites.

I really wonder how characters like Dark Pit and Dr. Mario will be able to fit in eight different alts when they are basically alt costumes in and of themselves. That basically means the respective characters have 16 different designs.

Doc is easy, he has 5 colors in Melee, Sakurai only has to think of 3 more, and how hard can 3 different colored scrubs really be?

Dark Pit will probably have Pit's colors, but darker.

I don't think SA-X would work because I feel it goes against something I've sort of realized about Smash...the "human-like" element.

Basically, all the playable characters, even the animals and robots, usually have a humanoid element to them. Ridley and SA-X don't really have that...they're mindless monsters basically, and I don't think those are the type of characters Sakurai, and even Nintendo, are really interested in making playable.

Were you fine with Wolf? I see him being similar to that.

At least he's his own character. Dr. Mario is just Mario wearing a coat. I don't mind his inclusion either, but it's the less favorable of the two.

I'll admit, actually liking a character can make me a tad more accepting of them if they're a clone. Like Falco or (arguably) Wolf. So call be biased towards them if you want, but not really caring for Dark Pit makes it harder for me to like his inclusion. =/

A lot of people make the mistake of him being an edgy, poochie style character just by looking at him, when he's actually the straight man of the whole cast lol.
Haha that's true. Maybe that's why people kind of find him boring? He's the only one who doesn't go out of his way to say silly stuff all the time.

I really have a hard time seeing how anyone who actually played KI:U not watched an LP or read someone's impressions online could actively think Dark Pit is a bad selection for a clone, especially when in the same breath they mention Lucina is a good choice.

If Lucina had been male and Dark Pit been female but had the exact same roles in their game/story would peoples opinions be flipped?

Whenever my favorite characters become clones (like Young Link ) I just get mad. I feel like more time should have been spent working on them.

Dr. Mario could have had a great moveset involving the viruses, but he was just white Mario.

Bowser? Ridley is a hell of a lot more intelligent than him.

SA-X wouldn't work mainly because she looks exactly the same as Samus does, before we even get into her character.

At this point, Metroid's best bet for a new comer that isn't Samus is Dark Samus. And even for Smash 5, Dark Samus will still be relevant because Prime is just that important of a series.

I have this small hope in my mind his coin jump with have viruses instead of coins as a visual effect.

Well, they use the Other M-style model. Thankfully, they don't use the piss yellow Power Suit.
Sure, Metroid doesn't deserve another character, but it seems a shame to leave her potential unused in a playable moveset.
LOL since when were characters given based on which series deserve them

The SA-X is a terrible idea because the entire point of her is that she's way stronger with you. Remove that and you've just got a dorky Samus that transforms into a frog.

This Totally agreed.

Hypocrisy at it's finest. It still weirds me out how a lot of you support the idea of Lucina (clone, fourth rep of FE, second rep of FEA) while complain about Dark Pit and take his inclusion as "Sakurai bias".

If Dark Pit eventually got a different outfit, people's opinions would change. Regardless of his character, he just isn't visually distinct enough. Even the glasses from that Bayonetta scribble would help.

Depends on how nice She-Pit's footwear is.

I still badly, badly want a purple and green Dr. Mario color. /v/ would go crazy.
Barney? The Riddler?

+1

Dark Samus is easily the best possible Metroid newcomer.

Isn't Ridley supposed to be intelligent? I don't think he qualifies as mindless, what with being the leader of the space pirates.

Ridley will never be in Smash!

Masked Man

I said wow
It just dawned on me that, given how Star Wolf's Theme is in the game, it would be a real slap in the face if Wolf weren't included as a playable character. D:

Oh, interesting. I wonder if they wouldn't be concerned about that spoiling people on unlockables, but I guess that's not a big concern for Nintendo with the Wii U game hitting later with the same roster.

I realize that we all pretty much know the full roster at this point, but I just can't help but feel like there are still some surprises waiting for us in the form of DLC. What better way to generate hype for another game than to offer even MORE characters? (For both versions, of course).

Maybe because Lucina is her own distinct person from the character she's cloned from she isn't bashed as much? I know Dark Pit's origins (and I support his inclusion in smash), but he still is simply a dark version of Pit.

I don't understand most of the clone hate in general, but I don't think gender is a primary concern here.

Only in the manga, in the actual games, he's pretty much just a complete monster with no redeeming qualities.

I just think it'd be weird to play as a character like that.

Ridley isn't really portrayed as "mindless". While he certainly doesn't speak in the games, he...

  • Steals the last Metroid and retreats before Ceres self-destructs (Super Metroid)
  • Commands his ship back to Zebes to attack Samus, and has the ship's computer built in his own image (Metroid: Zero Mission)
  • Targets Samus specifically during a large aerial battle and later breaks the floor under her to stop her from activating Generator B (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption)

He's a vicious monster, but he's not mindless.
