People that don't know what they are doing say Megaman. Granted, he was kind of weird at first, but after playing him for about an hour or so you can see his potentials.

I think people assume that having bad specials = bad character, which cannot be further from the truth. Megaman's air game is insane. His ground game is pretty risk/reward with some really strong moves (down smash) with huge lag. He lacks a regular forward titl, but his pellets put the pressure on pretty well. His up tilt is a great combo starter if you can pull it off. His up-b, while doing no damage is a great way to follow an opponent upwards to land some mid-air combos (combined with uair if they are offscreen or near offscreen is especially effective).

I dunno, Megaman has iffy specials but the character himself is pretty great. And that meteor smash. After years of playing smash, I think it's my favorite in the series. Of course, I haven't played the full game yet.
Exactly my thoughts based on playing him in the demo. If people are really saying he's a bad character so early on, then that is all the more reason for me to main him and prove otherwise. I already love his playstyle.

Smash Run is driving me insane.

Stop giving me duplicates, I haven't had the final Villager move in over 8 games, I even tried figure rush and classic mode to see if I'd get it, but no.

Fuck this stupid system of getting custom moves.

So no Datamine yet for cut characters?
Or did they do a good job of cleaning all of that out.

Seems like they did a good job :/

When downloading your games, any extra textures/files that are unnecessary can increase file size, so you'd want to remove textures, especially.

I haven't seen any proof of this. If anything, Sakurai himself said that things that he used to do alone aren't done by him alone now. It doesn't mean he's less busy, but he definitely has different tasks now.

I think that was just referring to character balance, which he did single-handedly in smash 64/melee, but had a staff for balancing in brawl, and quadruple the size for smash 4 (don't recall the exact numbers). I think, so far, they've done a much better job balancing, so i'm glad that he had a larger more comprehensive staff (especially for a roster that's 51 characters big)

You got a source on that?
He's spoken at length about his role in making each of the games, but it might be difficult for me to pull up links right now because I don't remember the individual sources for every single detail. There's also a lot of Japanese stuff that's been translated over the years that's been lost in time. If you don't trust me, maybe Masked Man or someone else who speaks Japanese can vouch for some of these sources:

SSB64 - The start of the project is discussed here, though I think the origins of this game are pretty well-documented.

Melee - The second half of this page says that Sakurai secretly wrote the project plan document in the summer of 1999 while publicly pretending he wasn't working on another Smash Bros.

Brawl - "I decide what goes in the game; nobody else."

"[...]me going into solitary to write the design document[...]" - this whole article is pretty insightful.

The Iwata Asks interview also paints a really good picture of Sakurai's role in making Brawl.

3DS/Wii U - This entire article. Specifically, things like:

"The team knows what I want in the game"
"The team's work is all built up according to what I told them, so it's ultimately my job to make adjustments and finalize it all."
"When I'm discussing supervision work with people, sometimes upwards of 20 staffers at once," he wrote, "there's often a video camera going around to record what I said and told them to do."
"Characters' in-game balance and features are something that I'm thinking about from the start while coming up with motions," he said. "If I left that to someone else midway, that'd make things more difficult. It's faster and more accurate to just input the numbers myself than try to explain it in words to somebody."

I just don't get the impression that Sakurai's taken on any kind of diminished/advisory/backseat role over the history of the series. He's obviously not the only person working on the game, and I never said he was -- just that his involvement in SSB4 is comparable to 64, Melee, and Brawl. He's always been a control freak.

They only say that because they don't know how to use him. :p
You gotta put a lot of time into him to make him a great character.

oh, yeah, I totally agree with you guys, I'm just repeating what some people are saying. Megaman will be a very fun and unique fighter =)

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
For better or worse, I love how Sakurai is so hands-on. And dominating. I'm jealous of his wife.

Yeah, he might be a diva, but I don't think Smash would ever hit its highs without him. It might've pleased everyone more, but it would likely just be so-so and too safe.

Just tried to get the Villager crowd cheer in my full version of the game. It still sounded exactly like that. Hm.

For those curious, I was playing as Villager against 2 other Villagers. I guess I'll try going against different characters this time.

I've tried it with several characters, it's his cheer no matter what.

I don't understand how that's supposed to be murabito.

The female part of the chant... that sounds very much like 'nana' to me... which part is that supposed to be? Mura or bito?

Is it in sound test?

I hate that sort of draconian development style that seems to happen a lot within Nintendo, or perhaps Japan in general. Sakamoto had similar control over the Other M dev team for example, and that was part of the reason the game turned out the way it did.

And Metroid Prime is a good example of a game that was developed with more committee input from the team rather than having a single dictatorial director making every decision.

It's definitely not "Murabito". The word just doesn't sound like that.

I'm gonna turn music off to see if I can get a clearer recording (crowd chants aren't in Sound Test).

I wasn't criticizing you, clearly you are on #TeamMegaman, :p
I was just saying what I *think* is going on with why people are claiming he's bad. Basically: quick to judge.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa why not!? That's silly!

I hope they're in the Wii U version. I mean... the sound byte is TECHNICALLY in the game files, no reason sound test can't replay it :( Sad. Wonder if it was on purpose or accident.

It's so exciting to know that this game can be patched. It seems like it's built into the game, too, with it prompting you to update once you go online. Very exciting to see what features get added and what bugs get fixed, and if balance every occurs.

Mega Man has a LOT of potential, it's just that he's pretty unique, I can't wait to see people who play better than me master him

There are times where having that sort of direct control works out well for him, though. LIke the fact that Sakurai ended up writing Uprising by himself so that the story and dialogue meshed well with the music and the overall game structure. And of course, you also have people like Itagaki, Kojima and Mikami who've had near total control of their games and most of the time they end up being fantastic.

Can we start acting like sakurai's reasoning to cut ice climbers is just a troll, just like how showing ridley's shadow during the direct was just a troll.

He's clearly lying about it. I mean he says they're not current, but neither is duck hunt! So, it's clearly a troll and ice climbers are coming back, just like how ridley is in the game playable because he can grab pikachu.

Dr. Mario, Villager, and DHD are weirdly absent from sound test.

Entirely or just their cheers?

Weird. I'll check it out when I get home.

Stamina, Flower, Giant, etc games are all in the game too.

But we all know how that turned out.

This iteration of the game is obviously amazing, but undoubtedly te least polished out of the bunch when it comes to content. I cannot believe how many simple things they overlooked and forgot to include/add.

So for everybody maining Link, i guess this little AT could become a big focus for his play-style: Bomb Dropping. Found it today, while playing the demo, and also saw a small discussion about it on SmashBoards. I filmed this short video showing the technic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwJNRh7rrRs

You have to press Z-Air, while holding a bomb, to let Link drop it. If you press it fast enough after a short-hop, you don't even have Link draw his hookshot.

I said this earlier and no one cared, it might be in the challenge board.

Regarding Sakurai's role in the game that was being discussed before, this was said about Brawl:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/gdc08-sakurai-on-super-smash-bros-brawl-development/
Moving onto the motion and animation in the game, Sakurai revealed that he used a posable 4" Microman figurine (abundant in Japan, apparently) to show his artists and animators the basic poses he wanted for each character. He would take 30 to 50 pictures for each character, creating an inventory of available poses that would later be animated together "without the aid of motion capture, everything was done by eye." A series of slides show the fidelity between his Microman pictures and the final Smash character renders, revealing a painstaking process that nevertheless gave Sakurai unique control over the art without a lengthy trial and error process.

The more intangible elements of each character, like weight and inertia, Sakurai did all by hand. Consider the example he gave comparing the jump animation of Mario and Samus in both character's original games. Mario returns to the ground quickly, while "Samus' jump has more float to it than Mario's." The reason for this isn't because "Samus' games take place in outer space" (there goes our theory) but because "players needed to be able to fire at enemies and doors from an arbitrary height" in Metroid. He noted that in the Sonic games, the character transitions from a relatively slow walk to a very fast run, and that transition is "exhilarating" for players. Inversely, Snake is "probably the slowest" human character in the game, but powerful attacks and a variety of weapons balance out that handicap. Above all, when constructing a character, Sakurai says your "initial thoughts on the subject are truly invaluable."
