On a personal level, I wouldn't mind if Nintendo continued to act crazy and fund games like Bayonetta 2, but you would think at some point they would realize that funding a few games like W101, Devil's Third, and Bayonetta is useless unless they fix the core demographic issue in the first place. But no I don't think there is a chance in hell Nintendo continues to fund this series. They're probably scratching their heads as to why these ventures aren't working out.

Surely the funding of the games is part of an attempt to fix the core demographic?

wow, even with ,,Platinum curse'' included, this is awful for Bayonetta. The exclusive title barely does half of the predecessor's XBOX port in Japan. On a machine that didn't have a good game since almost half a year on top of that - this sure implies a satisfied and healthy userbase! lol.
Just bring the hybrid next E3 and put this shameful console out of its misery. This is getting too embarrassing to watch. And sad for the very few good Wii U games, which are all bombing.

If people in Japan aren't buying Wii U, PS4 or Xbox One, what the hell are they buying? Is this gen a complete all-round fail over there?

I guess the migration to mobile gaming in Japan hasn't been exaggerated after all.

Are you seriously thinking that a having a young anime girl means loli.....the fuck.

Nanako is not a loli, if you think that there is something seriously wrong with you.

Nanako IS loli lol. She is the biggest loli example. There are nothing wrong with admitting that Vita had tons of loli game here.

Surely the funding of the games is part of an attempt to fix the core demographic?

I meant that they don't seem to realize that single game funding doesn't change anything when you have terrible 3rd party support. Games like Bayonetta 2 do nothing for them. They don't build future support from customers because the games are selling so badly that's it's not enough make an impact.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I'm surprised Destiny is selling at all in Japan.

I thought there was zero interest over there for FPS?

While i agree with u that saying all Vita owner is lolicon is wrong, that example you give is not supporting you at all here.

God Eater,Persona 4, Tokiden,Hatsune Miku and SAO had in a way young girl character or even Loli there.

And also, Soul Sacrifice is not doing well at at all there.

The fact that you seem to instantly associate any anime girl with lolicon is so fucking messed up. Wow.

I bet a lot of people have sold their Wii U's at this point. Or, it's gathering dust in their closet.

Also, it's Bayonetta. Even if they sold it on PS2 in 2004 it probably would have sold poorly.
When it has a weaker lineup than Wii, this is expected.

What is moderately respectable?

When did it come out Sony and MS turned Platinum down?

There is no proof. But I'm also assuming that Platinum Games would have approached Sony and Microsoft first with the proposition, as the audience for Bayonetta 1 would be on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Same with Devil's third... they have no choices left but one.

Exactly that. The mobile market is bigger than the dedicated market now.

Whatever happens,im glad they did it,Platinum is going to be fine for now, with next gen projects and we have a sequel to an amazing game,i wish it worked out better, but without Nintendo this could easily have been another Platinum/Clover game that didnt have a sequel too, not ANY company would fund a gamel ike this.

well Nintendo is trying hard to appeal to at least the character action fans. they published Ninja Gaiden 3 at launch, had W101, allowed Bayo 2 to exist, included Bayo 1 with it, allowed Devil's Third to exist, and had Hyrule Warriors. there might be some that I'm forgetting. yeah all of those either did or will likely bomb but you can't really say Nintendo is relying on one game to change anything.

Or Nintendo approached platinum first when they were looking to get games for their new console. Hell it would even make sense since Wonderful 101 was in development for Wii U before Bayonetta 2 made the switch.

It's been growing along with select other genres.

At this point if you own a console in Japan, you have a pretty big incentive to try branching out a bit if you actually want games to play.

Scalebound is Platinum's next big project. I don't see them working on anything else of that size in conjunction.

*It's Kamiya's next big project. The studio has managed to juggle Metal Gear Rising, The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 in concurrent development, the latter two of which are just as big in "size".

I don't see why they can't work on something just as big at the same time.

I thought it was well known that Platinum shopped around before going with Nintendo. who they went to is not confirmed but the fact that they looked around was, I thought.

Bayonetta 2 sales are kinda bad.

Well, all home console sales are bad, even PS4 is not that great. What the hell happened in Japan, it's like people don't like console gaming anymore. It's all about portables. Are they that often outside the house to not get the better experience and play on consoles ? bigger screens, better controller, online... i mean portables are nice but they will never replace consoles for me, unless they can be plugged on a big tv with the same graphic quality that i get on consoles.

It's really sad to see, i remember how consoles used to be king in Japan and the games creativity was at the top. Now it seems like they're fighting to stay relevant.

Given how long some of these have taken, I am kind of curious how much they were actually doing simultaneously.

Like clearly some of them were in at least pre-production or small team stage at the same time, but I'm not sure how many flagships they're capable of sitting in production at once.

I think it's feasible they can at least put a big project in pre-production though, unless Scaleboundn is a very large project.

Correct. I'm not sure why you'd think the migration would be exaggerated; what implicit motivation would those exaggerators have? By contrast, some people who talk about the success of, say, the 3DS might blow it out of proportion, because they're big fans of Nintendo or of the 3DS in particular and are motivated to make its success seem bigger than it is. There are a lot of Playstation fans who hang on every scrap of success the Vita or PS4 have in Japan, as well.

There are so few mobile fans on GAF, however, that virtually no one is motivated to exaggerate mobile's success. If anything, there are a good number of traditional Japanese game fans who earnestly wish this transition wasn't happening and would be motivated to downplay the success of mobile platforms.

It's definitely a possibility, but that would be a little foolish of PG to accept the deal from them without shopping around the idea to other publishers. Unless, they didn't give a crap about sales and just desired to make a sequel to Bayonetta.

Can't disagree there. All those three games I mentioned were spaced out relatively far and wide and they do have a sense of "prioritization" with certain titles.

I feel like there's a bit of a pattern when it comes to Platinum. 2009 and 2010 they came out with their three "big" titles under Sega (discounting Infinite Space since it was a collaboration) which practically put them on the map, while they came back in 2013/2014 with three more "big" titles. The only thing that they came out between those two periods was Anarchy Reigns. Seems like they usually take their time to develop multiple projects at once and begin coming out with them in a relative close proximity, then take a prolonged break to start working on multiple newer things.

but less horrible.
There doesn't need to be any "but less horrible" qualifier. It's a bomb, it's horrible, plain and simple. It was a grand waste of Nintendo's money from a financial perspective.

It sold half of what Bayonetta 1 did on the 360, which at the time had an installed base 800K units smaller.

It didn't sell as horribly terribly bad as to be at 20K or 10K or 5K. It could have been worse? Okay. But regardless of what it sold this week it could have always been worse, unless it literally hadn't sold a single unit.

"Sort of bomba. Kinda bad."

And on a somewhat related note, I don't really get why Platinum's string of bombs keep landing them work.

Sony was (and still is) rather broke and MS really winded down on game production in the last couple of years or so of 360's life before the X1 hit.

I guess Japanese men aren't into older women or women at all for that matter. *looks at Vita's top sellers* <_<

You use such an accurate term because the Japanese mobile market, while not only bigger than traditional market, is also much more mature than other regions.

It's just not reflected on GAF.

Or perhaps also a way of making sure to keep the people they do have stay satisfied and don't slowly go away. While they're (include myself) mainly there for Nintendo's game they do want other experiences in between and if they aren't there the desire for them might grow and they'll jump ship and that will mean even less sales for Nintendo's bigger titles in the long run because money will be split between a competitor's product.

I would think a certain level of customer maintenance is required. Games like Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and even Hyrule Warriors might be thought of as an investments on that front (even though they'd be happy if they were huge hits) so the Mario, Zelda, etc titles sell as they should in the long run. Otherwise you have a situation where customers leave because there is nothing for long periods of time and a title that should sell extremely well and not just well doesn't like Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Which I think can be argued would have and should have sold better had Nintendo not allow the Wii to collapse in the end. Especially when there is no third party support and all that is left is first party, indie or smaller dev Digital games, and whatever deals can be made. Or do people think this is something that should never be done? Am I completely off the mark here?

Because clearly the last one did so well on PS3/360 that they could get the sequel greenlit for PS3. Come on, now.

It had more to do with Sega cutting down on everything that wasn't the most profitable and instead focusing on what was (like Sonic etc.).

Is their activision game small? serious question.
About scalebound, let's see if MS will have an healing touch with them (outside the "licensed game" as Metal Gear)

Even though the Japanese developers jumped ship quite quickly to mobile, I don't think there's real evidence that the audience has given up on home console gaming. What I'm seeing is merely people rejecting two not very good products. PS4 and WiiU are expensive as hell, yet offer almost no games (not for Japan anyway). These sales could be a good thing, if these results wouldn't be interpreted as they are now. If a company actually managed to have an innovative console and at least tried to put some real effort into it, instead of abruptly going mobile out of fear, they probably wouldn't encounter such pathetic numbers.

Mario Kart and arguably Hyrule Warriors disagree.

Mario Kart is what I'm talking about. It came out in May.
