I think they might (and definitely should) go further than that. I see New Super Luigi and Animal Crossing Plaza both as experiments. New Super Luigi is basically another game on top of NSMBU sold as both DLC and a budget standalone. Animal Crossing Plaza is built on New Leaf assets with some bells and whistles added to the presentation.

I think it's feasible that for their less demanding franchises such as NSMB and Animal Cross(and possibly even Mario Kart) that they release the same game on both systems with the console versions merely being enhanced graphically. Then they release expansions such as New Super Luigi where they would normally release the other version.

Basically I'm suggesting they should look to take their software pipeline from:
NSMB Handheld -> NSMB Console
To:
NSMB both -> NSMBL both

It means there are more releases for both systems(even if they share them). An added benefit of this would be if they had unified handheld/console development for third parties. As said earlier by sörine if their console got even 50% of their third party handheld releases it would benefit greatly.

EDIT: After seeing your addition I think we are fundamentally in agreement but I think they will work up from handheld rather than down from console. I still think some series such as Zelda and Xeno- will be exclusive to one or other though because they are more demanding.
Yeah that's also totally plausible. I was just taking the other direction since it's the one that's conceptually harder to get functioning.

Personally I didn't read that statement as "The next handheld will be able to play Wii U games." because from a technical perspective, that's highly improbable, but rather that the hardware feature set of their next handheld will support all the hardware features found on the Wii U and more.

Like if the 4DS uses a modern SoC, it will support DX11.2 and OpenGL ES 3.0 hardware features, which means they can take their Wii U engines and port them to the handheld without huge problems. Similarly, the next console would assuredly support the same hardware features, allowing the engines used on 4DS to be used on that as well.

Currently the 3DS is an OpenGL ES 1.1 device (no programmable shaders, lots of other limitations) whereas the Wii U is a DirectX 10 tier device (programmable shaders under shader model 4, notably more flexible, but not quite as flexible as DirectX 11 tier hardware). Due to this 3DS engine technoloyg is woefully insufficient for the Wii U while Wii U technology is functionally incompatible with the 3DS.

By having the 4DS and the Wii 3 share the same hardware feature set, even if they have different hardware power, they can share the same internal engines and to an extent the same art assets (the 4DS versions would have to have lowered poly counts, but there's lots of programs to help with that) in the same way that Unreal Engine 4 can run on a modern iPhone and the PS4 or Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare can run on iOS8 devices with near console quality despite being on Frostbite 3.

Basically if they use the same hardware feature set they can take their Wii U technology and upgrade it to modern standards once, and then use that as the base for developing both 4DS and Wii 3 games, and even have the option of running them on both systems if they pare down the 4DS versions visually in a relatively automated way.

100% quoting your post. That's exactly how I feel next gen Nintendo systems will be. Even if you added more and more specific technical infos, which doesn't hurt :p

EDIT: And yeah, probably Oregano's right in saying that the games being shared across both systems will be 4DS games upported (more polygons, better resolution / effects), not Wii 3 games downported.

Bomb or not, Bayonetta 2 will be mine in the next mouth.

I'm sure the marketplace is waiting with bated breath. Because the world obviously moves according to Nintendo's schedule.

The system (3DS) is selling in the realm of 90k on a monthly basis in the US. 2017. Lol.
Presumably that implies 2018 on the home console front. Good luck with that.

Yeah. Considering how they are losing money even with current hardware/software revenues just imagine 2016 and 2017 if they won't launch any new systems. Yikes. Both WiiU and 3DS will be dead in 2017.

4DS, or whatever is called, will be released in 2016 100%. What's still up in the air is if'll be released in Q1 2014 or in Q4 2014, that's the only thing we've yet to see.

The whole handheld/console hybrid stops being interesting/successful the moment Nintendo tries to sell the games separately, and they will :/

Guessing next week will be a solid week for Vita. Sen no Kiseki 2 (1st one launched on Vita with 81k), Danganronpa spin-off, Vita remake of Dungeon Travelers 2, and miscellaneous other games.

I hope so. It's time to see the little guy push past 25k. It needs a good bump before the onslaught of 3DS titles in the form of Pokemon and Monster Hunter 4.

The idea of a 3ds successor launching in 2017 is laughable in its current state. Not that it couldn't happen, but it would be hilarious if they tried.

The 3DS is going to dominate well into next year.

I think it's the opposite. They seem to be able to get first parties to fund pretty ambitious titles with original ideas even when the market is cratering for such titles with little hope for the publisher to recoup the cost. They still get paid, the games still get made. Of course the concern now is what it means in the future.

As I said before. I have no fears about platinums future. They may get less chances to make original IP but their work rate is such that I can see publishers happy have them work on their franchises.

Platinums future is less Anarchy reigns and Bayonetta's and more legend of Korras and Metal gear Risings.

Im sure that still sucks for them on some level, but they wont be closing down anytime soon.

Obviously the shape the product takes will be important. But channel access and any vestiges of publisher support in 2017? Any consumer mindshare? In all likelihood the system will be selling at Vita levels in the US market by that stage - and that simply isn't conducive to a new system introduction.
I just don't see it being quite so insurmountable I guess. Nintendo will still have channel access thanks to other products (handheld, maybe QOL) and it's not like they have much vestiges of publisher support today anyway. Launching a year later changes nothing there really.

They can move forward from Wii U by dumping the Wii branding and radically distancing the next console from it design wise. Consumer mindshare can flip immediately with the right product (again see GC/Wii) and again both approaches (cutting and running versus sticking it out) have negative consequences there anyway.

This is exactly why I hope it manages a decent bump before it's too late. If it doesn't next week, I highly doubt it will get another chance this year.

As one of the Biggest Ninja Gaiden fans on this board, fucking lol.

People are only trying to find the good in that game because its exclusive.

It lookeds like a warmed tossed salad with a side helping of sweet infested shit.

Itakagi should be ashamed of himself.

That said, I see my WiiU as enough as a sunk cost that I see no reason to bother selling it. Once im bored with Bayo 2 (which hopefully wont be for a good year yet) ill just hand my WiiU down to some kid in the family. Its still an extremely good "My first console"

38k is pretty awful, but expected.

Btw, ever thought of having a third chart where it's the average of MC & Famitsu? Not sure why MC is the standard.

brawl didn't get much beyond the 2m mark in japan right? from the looks of it it seems that smash 4 might do that with the combined platform sales.

Super Smash Bros for 3DS will do that alone.
Likely before the Wii U game even launches.
It might even have a good shot at 3 million.

I don't think the N3DS would exist if they expected it to only have a year long lifespan.
Look at the gaps between GBC->GBA and DSI->3DS to see when the next handheld is likely to arrive.

I don't think in today's consumer electronic world people would see a discarding a failed device after 4 years as cutting and running when we are on a 2 year phone upgrade schedule and buy much more expensive products than Wii U on a quicker basis. I would bet a good sum of money that the majority of the people that own a Wii U wouldn't give a shit that Nintendo leaves the system behind when stuff like Mario Kart and Smash are available.

Bad comparison when the handheld market has signficantly changed. All those revisions were also extremely successful worldwide. The New 3DS will just be a band aid on the terrible sales currently in the west. The new 3DS exists to keep 3DS sales from falling off a cliff.

Supposedly they are working on making it much better. We will see next year how much it has improved or not

I just don't see N3DS selling to new audience and therefore increasing software sales of 3DS ecosystem. I mean obvisouly it's great if it sells well to current audience (if margins are allright) but software is where the money is made and declining software sales indicate that you should launch a new console as the active userbase is decreasing. In Japan N3DS definitely has best place to succeed but I just don't see it doing that much in west.

The market may have changed, but I doubt that the hardware R&D and software ramp-up to a new platform launch has. Mobile phones don't have to worry about that, but consoles and handhelds do.

It would take one of the biggest turnarounds I've seen in game development to make that turd look better, but maybe it's delayed to 2016 or something.

Do you think the new 3DS is all Nintendo R&D has been working on? There is also plenty of time between now and then to get a competent line up ready. Of course if we see a deluge of Nintendo New 3DS software than you are probably right.

it was never given a release window so 2016 is kind of expected at this point, considering every other E3 game announcement had 2015 attached to it

Bayonetta 2 was released on 20th, September and the chart is from (15-21) so it counted two or just one day sales for Bayonetta 2. Lets see how it do next week. Anyway, I think Bayo 2 will sell much better in the west. Japan is dead.

It also has a good spread of second tier sellers lined up for the rest of 2014 (some of which would be top tier on Vita). One Piece GBX, Attack on Titain Chain, Derby Stallion Gold, Tales Reve Unitia, Forbidden Magna, Hero Bank 2, Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold, Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 and probably some others I'm overlooking.

Early next year is starting strong too with Codename STEAM, Project Mirai Remix, Xenoblade 3D, PoPoLoCrois Farm Story, Devil Survivor 2BR, The Great Ace Attorney and Kenka Bancho 6 already. I know there was some sentiment coming out of TGS that 3DS was uncharacteristically light on upcoming games but sitting down and looking at the schedule I don't think that's the case at all.

It´s more like you have no idea of precedence. GBC and also DSi had a good 2.3 years before their respective successors launched. It´s laughable to think they´ll launch a revision like the new 3DS for a considerably shorter intended lifecycle. Considering that unlike the transition from GBA to NDS there won´t be any direct competition this time around.

The earliest possible launch could be the end of 2016, which would be just a few months shy of 2017 anyway.

Of course, I forgot everything in the video game industry worked the exact same way every single time.
I think their priority order at the moment is:
1) QoL
2) handheld / console standardisation tools
3) 3DS successor
4) WiiU successor

Speaking of QOL, for something that is supposed to be launching next year, its strange for Nintendo we have literally seen nothing. Seems like Iwata pulled that card earlier than they wanted because of the terrible financial results.

No one's saying Devil's Third is going to be amazing. They're just pointing out it exists, so yes Nintendo is still funding 3rd party titles after Bayonetta 2. Like the new Fatal Frame coming out next week.

No, it doesn´t. I just think calling the possibility of this actually happening laughable is just ignorant, since there actually has been precedent.

Thanks Mpl. Looks like Fatal Frame is doing fairly decently at least compared to the port =).

@Anihawk - Smash Brawl sold about 2.3M LTD. It's still on the top 50 charts today b/c it had ridiculous legs (sold about 90K each year for the past 3 years iirc). Also, how would Bayo 2 sell 10% of what it sold. You expected it to sell 1/2 of W101 lol?

On paper the game sounds good but I do admit the singleplayer was rough as hell but the multi looks like it will be fun.

Hopefully this is true.

Devil’s Third producer Tomonobu Itagaki has explained to Japanese gaming publication Famitsu that the game has undergone some big changes to the build we saw at this year’s E3 event back in June. Itagaki also explained what it’s been like to have Nintendo become publisher of your game. There’s plenty of interesting details below.
