Does this say we can switch party members in battle for FFXV?

Try now. I think it does say that. Got a few people to confirm.

Oh, the PSN description? I suppose so.

The guy who was playing the demo switched to different characters to show the different gameplay models. He just played as Noctis, that's all. I'm guessing it's gonna be in the game anyway.

You must have missed the interviews:

– How do you operate in battles?

Tabata: You don’t choose commands, you fight while switching between offense and defense. The only character you can control is Noctis, but the other characters operate based on a strategy assigned by the player and they act automatically. Of course even in battle you can pull up the settings screen and change the strategies and individual weapons of all your party members.

Is there a link to that description?

It's on the JP PSN store (PS4), so no links.

Totally forgot about the interview.

Wait, Roberto Ferrari isn't credited as a main character designer anymore? o_O

Cor Leonis is no more?

yea the description for TGS 2013 still has Roberto Ferrari.....
maybe they just didn't include it in the main description.

I don't think Roberto Ferrari designed any of the five characters we were shown in the TGS 2014 trailer. I think we'll see his name again later.

Indeed it does

Taking advantage of the next generation console’s specifications, characters can move around the entire screen and the traditional party battle of Final Fantasy games is evolved so you can enjoy battle even more strategically by switching party members. Via SP

The last line seems to say something like " you can tactically change your party members to enjoy the battle."

I think this could mean something like Gambit, where you can change your party member's tactics, instead of changing control of the party members.

Please don't be a mistake in the description!

Was it unclear if he meant the demo or the full game in those interviews. When original looking at those interviews over a week ago it seemed like he meamt the full game, but now I'm not sure.

He also switched to a frog, so I don't know if that says much unless a frog is playable too. That would make an interesting thread though..."No playable women in FFXV, has playable frog."

The description talks about changing party members, but makes no mention of switching leaders, so it doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. I guess it does confirm that there will be more than 4 party members in the game. :p

The credit for character design seems to have changed from "Character Design: Tetsuya Nomura/Roberto Ferrari" to "Main Character Design: Tetsuya Nomura". This change is also reflected on the official site now. It might suggest that Roberto Ferrari isn't the only sub-character designer anymore, and with Nomura off the project they have a larger team now creating NPCs and supporting casts. Like the XIII sequels.

Was there ever a reason why you wouldn't be able to switch chars? Technically it wouldn't be a difference, anyway. What Tabata meant with "you can only control Noctis" probably was that you can only control one player at once (obviously - I mean, how would you control more simultaneously?^^). Of course, nobody knows yet. Maybe they'll say more on Thursday.

Yeah, Tabata said that the game was in debug mode... :/

Could have been a female frog. Two birds with one stone.

Hmmmm, that makes it sound like switching who's in your party, but not who you control. Damn this uncertainty!

Oh man! I think party leader switching will be in the full game. Be good to get some video confirmation this Thursday.

Stelluna will most likely join the party then.

This is what I was thinking. Does Square usually reveal all of the cast of playable characters before release? Maybe they want to surprise during the story.

I didn't usually follow media before a Final Fantasy release because I would buy them without doubting for one second. That was until FF XIII ...

He has no twitter, the outrage about this is minimal compared to other similar cases, and the interviews have never given him an avenue to discuss the matter at length.

It's not like he did another new round of interviews after TGS where he's had time to react to this. Most of the news and various outlet interviews were around the same time, just released in different timing.

Yeah and PR probably has a roadmap for him of what he can and can't talk about.

didnt that petition get an official response from SE, basically it said:
"we notice, but we can't share anything yet, please be patient and wait for more info"

Sure, this basically tells us nothing, but it shows they are aware of the concerns people have with the gameplay

I'm not going to get my hopes up on character switching just yet. I do think they will be in the full game, but I will still wait for Tabata to confirm anything before I start jumping for joy.

Did they? they're probably going to confirm the alternate control method that was supposedly in the patent.

PR-wise, it brings them in a good light.

In the 2011 trailer, they showed Prompto being controlled and aiming his gun.
I would be surprised if party member switching doesn't make it in.

I could definitely see them cutting it, in effort to make the holiday 2015 deadline, tbh.

Designing entire battle systems for each member seems like a shitload of work (an ability that made me most hyped for this game). I could see them saying "fuck it" and default to this new whatever-it-is.

Well designing mechanics for each member sure is a lot of work but... this has been in development for 8 years. It's not like they didn't have time. So cutting things to make a deadline now seems shitty.

That unless my theory is correct and this game was actually cancelled for most of the 2006-2012 time.

I'm just super skeptical as it is. Tabata, had zero reservations about completely upending Nomura's vision for the battle system, which still seemed in place back at the E3 2013 trailer (we even had a breakdown analysis done by gaffers. It was super promising)

Tabata mentioning "only controlling Noctis" even if he's just referring to the demo, make me uneasy. Why would such a crucial feature not make it into the polished demo? Either it's coming in really hot, or they nixed it =\

They already seem to have a buttload of movesets for the characters, so I'm not sure if it would be all that much work just to make all those moves playable, especially since they pretty much have to think about the handling & balancing of all the different kinds of weapons because Noctis can use them. I mean, they already have all kinds of movement animations for the characters, would it be all that much work to give the player control over them? And they already have plenty of different kinds of attacks.

They could make Noctis the main star but give essential support roles for the other characters. I never expected the other characters to have the versatility of Noctis, who Nomura was always talking about as a jack of all trades & master of none who could use all the weapons and zero-shift around while others would be tied. More in the line of the others just being a little more efficient in using their speciality weapons for added benefits & special skills. So while Noctis CAN swing huge-ass swords, maybe Gladiolus would be the only one to have enough strength behind his swings to shatter some defensive layer of some bigger enemies. And while Noctis could maybe use guns, maybe Prompto would be accurate enough to damage airborne enemies in a way that makes them fall down so that the more ground-tied characters could attack them. It shouldn't be overly taxing to give Prompto a few different cool gun-shooting poses for different types of guns he could alter between and maybe make him more of a Vanquish like character who stays behind cover and has to keep himself away from attacking melee-enemies with a little more efficient dodge-rolling/other evasive moves. ANd while I mention Vanquish, I never expected FFXV to turn into Vanquish level 3rd person shooter whenever you switched to Prompto, just offer a slightly more basic (lock-on including) 3rd person shooter to bring a little bit of variety to the combat and Prompto having his own useful skills that you would WANT to switch over to him when it feels wise.

Basically, give all characters some basic 3-5 hit combo (they already have the animations, just make it so they are behind button presses), maybe make each of them good at different branches of magic (Ignis would be an efficient Fire-caster with maybe the strongest fire spells that even Noctis can't use, Prompto could be Lightning, Gladiolus some Earth-based spells and Cor a master of Ice), a few exclusive skills that are suitable for their weapons/skills/quirks (i.e. Gladiolus could get rid of smaller enemies efficiently with the supplex move we see in the 2013 trailer and we know that Prompto had the ability to see "weak spots" in enemies & attack them in early builts of the game's combat system etc.)

I wouldn't be opposed (and actually thought the game would be like it) of the game having Noctis be the go-to character you use the most to move around & all that and then you just switch to other characters occasionally to strip away the enemy's shield or do something else Noctis can't do to maybe put an enemy into a weakened state and then switch back to Noctis to deal damage. Didn't really think about the game as being the kind where you'd want to play it through with only using one character, but more of a team-combat system where Noctis is the leader and the others have some support actions that you also have control over.

I'm just super skeptical as it is. Tabata, had zero reservations about completely upending Nomura's vision for the battle system, which still seemed in place back at the E3 2013 trailer (we even had a breakdown analysis done by gaffers. It was super promising)

Demos often limit the degree of control, whether it's by limiting the moveset or the amount of characters you can control. Maybe Noctis gameplay is the furthest along in a way that they can give gamers a look at a slightly more powerful late-game Noctis whereas the others are more WIP so they'd rather just let the AI handle them for the time being.

Can't wait to see what they're going to show on Thursday. Any chances that Tabata will talk about Luna, or the story?

I want him to tell us if Stella is Luna or if Luna is in fact another character and Stella is still in. That's all I want to know honestly. Taking out Stella would be bad as Nomura said she had a crucial role in the story just a year ago.

They obviously haven't taken out the character (formerly known as?) Stella. I mean, we see her in the trailer (though much different from her past design). There are some pretty simple explanations for the name:

-they've changed the name. Luna means moon which is perhaps more closely tied to the whole sleep theme that seems to be in the game than Stella and could be grounds for a new director to change the name if he felt like it.

-Noctis and co know Stella as/call her Luna for some reason. Maybe she studied in the same school as Noctis & Prompto where those two supposedly met and they came to know her as Luna then and as they are on their way to see her (maybe after a long time of not seeing her), they still call her Luna or are unaware that she is actually named Stella

-the trailer has been cut deceptively in relation to some of the dialogue heard vs. what we see on the screen and much like the E3 trailer which had dialogue that didn't have anything to do with the events happening in the trailer (i.e. the dialogue was taken from the early parts of the game and not from during the Leviathan attack), just because they talk about someone called Luna in the trailer it doesn't mean they are actually talking about the woman we see on screen moments later. Luna could actually be some completely different character (and no, I don't mean Stella's long-lost twin sister used to lure Noctis out of Lucis or anything...). Maybe Luna is the black-ish blue haired lady whose portrait we see in the 2013 trailer.

Still think Stella is Stella and Luna is Luna unless told otherwise. Not unusual in FF.

Very low, I think. It's just an extension of the TGS Talk Show.
