Major PS4 System Software Update v2.0 Available NOW

So, Basically we change colours or use one of the 2-4 themes, and then buy the rest. Super annoying considering that this is the second time Sony is limiting something that the PS3 allowed (Music being the other one).

I am guessing there is actually no good reason for this, other than to force theme purchases.

I'd say a good reason for custom themes not being supported yet is because they haven't finished a theme maker.

Regards to the music complaints, pretty sure Sony isn't purposely limiting their own console. They just didn't focus on making PS4 a media center console like they did with PS3, which i'm personally fine with seeing that I have a computer, a smartphone and a hundred other devices that can play music, videos etc. This newly added USB music player is a sign that they aren't ignoring media features completely and are most likely adding more down the road.

So I just noticed that Xbox has custom themes and there is even a subreddit for user created themes.

Are we not getting that or are we? If I'm not mistaken, we can't use custom backgrounds, right?

Kinda annoyed if that's the case.

isnt that just custom backgrounds? XB1 does not have themes.

I guess they are calling custom backgrounds themes to make it same as PS4 feature, but PS4 dynamic themes have icons, backgrounds, even sound effects. There is pretty huge difference in integration of custom themes in the system.

Going to hold back with this for a couple of weeks, don't have any use for my PS4 right now anyway. Sony has a track record of bricking consoles with big updates, I'll let others do the beta testing :)

Add 100 people to your friends list and then see how it performs. Add onto that pile of shit the need for the system to notify everyone on that list when yo come off an don and vice verse... never going to happen imo unless they limit it somehow to maybe 10 friends or something.

Or they could do what MS did and let you sort your friends and customise your notifications so it only shows the friends coming online that you want to see.

Pause/resume downloads in, maybe people will stop complaining now.

Every firmware from every console manufacturers get the occasional problem. I've never had a problem myself.

Every firmware update ever on any device ever had a risk of bricking. And a track record? Really? Its been pretty damn rare that one of their updates caused mass bricking.

Also, the PS4 has a much better safe mode than the PS3 did. Its a lot harder to brick.

SO guys do you think there is a chance the update will roll out soon or do you think they'll do it tomorrow evening after the store updates?

wut? Firmware updates dont brick consoles. lol
They generally don't. But there was one instance on Ps3 in which it did brick a bunch of ps3's. I know because my friends was bricked. That was only one firmware update though. I don't know how small or big it was widespread. But it was enough.

How is it nonsense? It makes sense given the context because it gives future users an incentive to get a PS4, with more things to come, rather than blowing their wad by releasing 10 years worth of updates on one day and never updating again. I asked because I was unsure and that made sense to me.

I thought you being sarcastic. Sorry if misjudged your intentions.

most likely tomorrow night. If it was going to be released tonight they would have had a blog or twitter post saying it would be out later this evening. Like they've done in the past.

Fantastic that finally pause and resume for downloads are in. Will help greatly manage my data cap in putting some of the PS+ games on the back burner till month rolls over.

Still... Not happy it took almost a year for such a basic feature.

.

I don't understand this mindset. You have wanted this feature for a year. During that year you have been unhappy whilst waiting for said feature. That feature is now here. This should make you happy. But instead you prefer to hold onto unhappiness retrospectively. Why cling onto unhappiness when happiness is upon you?

I was the understanding that with Sony's firmware you download the entire firmware and not just a patch. so this way you're overwriting the whole firmware so this way it won't brick the unit. I could be wrong but that's what I remember reading.

They typically release it late the night before the store updates. I expect it in a few hours.

I hope that happens. :D

EU blog said tomorrow. Updates always come in the early hours. Therefore it must be in the next couple of hours.

Well, I don't know how it works, but a few consoles were bricked.

Well I ended up staying up this late doing an essay anyway, so I might as well stick it out for a few more hours. When are we looking at it going live? 2-3am?

I remember one that made the disk tray on some PS3 to stop working

The fact that the PS3 was a media center was a huge bonus for me. Streaming content to it, watching movies, etc? Great. The fact that the Wii U doesn't do that is a negative in many consumer's eyes. It may not considered such in the current Wii U owner's minds, but that's because they're hardcore gaming fans. They don't care. Problem is, many people do care. I for one am quite incensed that there's no PS4 media remote still since I use it to watch TV and movies all the time.

i purchased PS3 due to media center functionality, blu ray revolution and dlna.

But this is 2014 now and things have changed. All TV's support DLNA and mkv playback, all blu-ray players support dlna and mkv playback and these days you can buy $35 Chromecast to easily share media to your screen. It is not perfect but it is doing it way better than my PS3 ever did... and for $35. Amazon just launched their version for $19-$39. All of Sony smart TV's next year will have Chrome Cast built in.

So for PS4, I have that part covered. While I would not mind having dlna client support, I doubt I will ever use it because my Chrome Cast is doing it really well.

So, personally, I prefer them to work on gaming parts because thats why I am interested in PS4 - for gaming.

So imho, there is huge difference between 2006 and 2014.

Yes, I can confirm that this update will be going live between 2 and 3 am somewhere on earth.

With the OS being on the hard drive and the BIOs(safe mode) being on board storage, you shouldn't run into a bricking problem as long as Sony keeps past OSs downloadable to usb drive.

Past firmware updates (on PS3 at least) rolled out around 3/4am UK time, as far as i remember.

Will plugging in your ipod/iPhone work for the USB music player?
I think they would definitely have said that if it could. Don't bet on it. I'm thinking it's going to be completely basic. USB flash drive formatted in FAT32 with .mp3 in the root. Hopefully, it supports better audio formats, but really we should expect the minimum to avoid disappointment.

I think it would have to have generic usb support. At lest to work with what they have now.

File format whiles, its currently MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.

Good Question. Also anyone recommend any good USB drives that would pair well with the PS4's aesthetics?

I''m planing to continue using my WD My Passport External Hard drive paired with a usb extension with a right angle so it doesn't stick out too much
